@GRT sorry to hear about your Mom.

Scheduling a vaccine appointment is actually rather difficult, and I wonder if that is part of the barrier for a lot of people in the United States. I tried to schedule a follow up vaccine for a friend, who had a first shot in May, and has been too busy working to get her 2nd one. Until I pestered her about it.

So, I said I would schedule it for her...and it was actually quite difficult. Couldn't find any appointments, none at CVS, finally managed one at Walgreens today. But this could be a huge barrier for people, especially if they don't use the internet or have access.
I had a similar problem with one of the aunts back in June but discovered Walmart’s with a pharmacy offer a walk up vaccine. Was on the bus route too. My cousin kept driving by to take her but she decided to ride the bus. o_O
That was awesome you volunteered to assist in finding her a location!

Yeah, well, we just went for the scheduled appointment, and they forgot to take the vaccine out of the freezer!!! So, we have to go back in an hour and a half. She had to call work, tell her supervisor she couldn't be there to open at 12, due to the issue with the Covid shot...and got in trouble. She was told to go to work. I said, "No.". And...told her to tell her boss she was quitting due to inflexibility to get her Covid Vaccine.

Yes, for "some reason", the supervisor backed down in a heartbeat. This is actually my daughter, and honestly, screw the job. There are plenty jobs. Places can't even open due to lack of employees. And I have never, ever been that way about work. I have prided myself to have raised responsible children, with an excellent work ethic. But, this? Can't get time off for a Covid shot? It was hard enough to schedule it for when she would not be at work. And due to no fault of her own, she was told to come back.

My daughter is getting that vaccine today. And her supervisor can deal with it. Or my daughter will give a two week notice today.

I am wondering when, health insurance companies are going to stop paying the huge medical bills for those who caught Covid after refusing to get a vaccine?
I see that, on the horizon.

Good point. Why should they pay out when a couple of cheap vaccinations could save them thousands of dollars?

Probably when they do the same for smokers, overweight people and those who refuse to exercise.

Here is a very small representation of what’s going on in Indonesia right now. This video barely scratches the surface of the severity of the situation.

so very sad.... They have only 7% vaccinated, and have only received the Chinese vaccine. If the Chinese vaccine is so very questionable in regards to effectiveness, what is going on in China???

geezzzz oh man. You know, Mickey... this does raise an important point. I think most of us just stay silent assuming an individual is against getting the vaccine. We do have to keep asking people, and see if they want help.

A forum friend (from the deep south) on another site has a aggressive form of breast cancer and undergoing chemo, is fully vaccinated and is working. She is employed by a large auto dealership. Many of the employees are/were against vaccination. 6 employees contracted covid. He’s allowing time off with pay to get vaccinated, provided incentives, and setting up a vaccine clinic at the dealership for employees and their families. Several of the employees have health struggles. However, the owner is tired of trying to convince employees to get vaccines. He will pay sick leave for fully vaccinated who contract Covid and no paid sick leave for the unvaccinated who contract Covid.

I am sure, that my daughter would have gone to work, if I hadn't stepped in. She is young, and easily bullied. Forget it.

Mama had her back!

Why should the unvaccinated who tested positive even go to the hospital emergency to seek treatment? Before the vaccine was available, both my sil (ER nurse) and my daughter Nicu (NP) had to reuse PPE when it was in short supply. They both contracted Covid and their 3 young children did too. Now that vaccines are readily available, I have no patience with anti-vax people who meet the guidelines.

Here in the US, those with health-related problems can pay higher premiums for medical and life insurances.

Ha. This just went into effect this May 28, 2021. Lasts until September 2021 or the money is gone.
COVID-19 Temporary Emergency Paid Sick Leave Program
ETA. We also have newish “state sick time” -since 2015ish pre covid- 40 hrs a year for prettty much everyone can be used for appointments and such. Can’t be penalized by employer. Pretty good perk for most of us.

In March 2020 -spouses company gave them 3 weeks of paid covid time we called it lol. Over and above any personal time.

getting vaxed early on was tough- before it went to general admission. Took several days of constant tweet watching and fb following and wasn’t at all easy tbh

Now there seems to be random pop up buses/ clinics. And more direct face to face stuff in specific areas? And I assume the stores still have them cvs/grocery Etc

It doesn’t have be an issue (I know I’m oversimplifying ). But it’s frustrating that there are so many solveable barriers. I mean don’t people get paid a lot of money to figure this kind stuff out and try and make it work ?

Oh mass had some sort of meeting/planning thing last week?for when kids are eligible. Hopefully they’re already prepping for that.

schools - Gv Baker says masks recommended but not required by the state :mad:Which totally makes me think he’ll be making a Presidential bid. Just sayin.

Wow, powerful story. Excerpt from the article:

"I am angry that the tragic scenes of prior surges are being played out yet again, but now with ICUs primarily filled with patients who have chosen not to be vaccinated. I am angry that it takes me over an hour to explain to an anti-vaxxer full of misinformation that intubation isn’t what “kills patients” and that their wish for chest compressions without intubation in the event of a respiratory arrest makes no sense. I am angry at those who refuse to wear “muzzles” when grocery shopping for half an hour a week, as I have been so-called “muzzled” for much of the past 18 months.

I cannot understand the simultaneous decision to not get vaccinated and the demand to end the restrictions imposed by a pandemic."

Here we (Texas) are speeding toward the cliff and our Governor is pushing his foot on the accelerator. I will never understand some of our officials (looking at you Florida) seemingly laughing in the face of dire circumstances.

Dallas Co Judge says Texas has provided no options to fight COVID | wfaa.com
DALLAS — A recently released UT Southwestern report projects 800 to 1,000 COVID-19 hospitalizations in Dallas County by Aug. 16 because of the more dangerous and transmissible Delta variant.
It also forecasts 1,100 – 2,000 hospitalizations in Tarrant County. And if vaccination rates stay the same, the data projects regional hospitalizations by October to climb beyond the peak of 4,000 from January.
Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins says he fully expects it all to happen.
“There’s not a lot cities and counties can do because our Governor has stripped cities and counties of the ability to do things that the CDC and the local doctors say would keep us safe, like requiring masks as our kids start back to school,” Judge Jenkins said on Inside Texas Politics.

This is hopeful.
Let’s try that again. The CDC says, as of yesterday, 346,456,669 total vaccine doses have been administered. That’s about 816,203 more than the day before. This is the fifth straight day of recording more than 700,000 shots in arms.

You go Mickey!!

Thanks. I told her to call in sick tomorrow if she has side effects.

But, anyway, this is a personal experience of one reason why a lot of people have not been vaccinated. The problem with the appointment, then, the vaccine wasn't ready, and the bullying from her boss. A trifecta of barriers.

I am still really angry about her manager from work. WTH?! Telling her she couldn't go to her Covid Vaccine appointment? When it wasn't even her fault for the vaccine being frozen.

Imagine if this is going on with young people, who are busy, and trying to get a vaccine. There is a huge problem here. We need to be doing better to help people have access to the vaccine, and penalize employers who don't let employees have time off to get the vaccine. My daughter wasn't even asking for pay...just time.

No wonder there is a problem with people getting vaccinated here.

Florida woman urges people to get vaccinated after losing her dad and brother to Covid-19 the same week - CNN

'Do it for the people you care about': Florida woman urges people to get vaccinated after losing her dad and brother to Covid-19 the same week

Payten McCall, 24, and her family were afraid to get vaccinated, but now she's urging people not to make that mistake after losing her oldest brother and her dad to Covid-19.

Her dad, Mark McCall, 60, died early Friday morning in the Covid ward of a Jacksonville, Florida, hospital where her mom, Sherry McCall, 58, was also being treated for the virus.

The family was already reeling after her brother, Britt McCall, 35, died on Monday.

[...]

The family was scared to get the vaccine, McCall said, because they have health conditions and didn't know how their bodies would react to the shots.
"We weren't trying to convince anyone not to get it," she said. "We didn't care what choices people made, but unfortunately we made the wrong one."
