Coronavirus COVID-19 - Global Health Pandemic #99

This pandemic is exhausting. I'm spent. Searching for anything Good that can come out of the pandemic and haven't found any yet.

So far we have deaths, illness, divisive nation, mistrust, dangerously high inflation for food, housing, gas, insurance (watch out for sharp increase next year), everything else. And the poor children getting tested, wearing masks, learning the word Quarantine at 5 years old. Breaks my heart.
Anything good?

It does feel bleak and so many of us are exhausted. It feels like a constant nonstop level of anxiety.

The one thing I try to remind myself is the miracle of vaccinations. They really are amazing for those of us that choose to take them. Cases are trending up, but we keep hearing that of those in intensive care only a very small percentage are vaccinated. I know I'm probably as safe as modern science allows for now but still seeing so much suffering is heartbreaking.

Honestly the pandamic takes up way too much space in my head and I don't know how to change that. When it gets too heavy for me I put on my headphones and listen to my favorite music really loud, that seems to help for a bit.

I'm also grateful for this thread of like minded souls.

Hang in there.

Jail inmates with COVID given drug that "can cause serious harm"

Eva Madison, a county elected official, raised the issue during a finance and budget committee meeting Tuesday night. Jail officials were presenting their 2022 budget, which included the jail's physician, Dr. Rob Karas, asking for a 10% increase in the medical services contract.

Madison informed committee members and the jail officials that a county employee, who has opted to stay anonymous to the public, told her that he had been sent to the jail's clinic to get tested for COVID-19.

When the person tested negative, they were given a $76 prescription for ivermectin. He was concerned about the prescription and asked his primary care physician about it, and the the physician told him to "throw that in the trash," Madison said.

While this individual "had the good fortune to have a physician that he could go to and ask for a second opinion," Madison said at the meeting, "our inmates do not have that choice."

Karas Health Care, Dr. Karas' practice, has been touting ivermectin for months. On July 16, the practice posted on Facebook, "if anybody you know test positive send them or [sic] way and we'll get them started on doxy, singular, ivermectin, vitamin d, vitamin c and zinc."

The post was flagged by Facebook with the message: "Some unapproved COVID-19 treatments may cause serious harm."

Madison told CBS News on Wednesday that after learning of the prescription, she contacted the county sheriff, Tim Helder.

"The sheriff defended it, said that Karas has been regularly prescribing ivermectin at the jail during the pandemic," Madison said.

CBS News has reached out to the Washington County Sheriff's Office and Karas Health Care for comment.

Madison said that when she spoke to Karas, he confirmed he had been prescribing the medicine to detainees at the jail, and that he and his family members were also taking it.

"It's very disturbing to me that that's the level of care we're providing to folks down at the jail," Madison said at Tuesday's meeting.

The jail representatives at the meeting said that the only oversight of the doctor's practices was the state medical board, which issued his license.

"He's state licensed, board approved," one of the officials said.

If inmates have concerns about their medical care, he said, "certainly they can write a letter or address the state board of health about any concern they have about any physician."

SMH!!!!!

I am especially SMH over this quote from the article:

If inmates have concerns about their medical care, he said, "certainly they can write a letter or address the state board of health about any concern they have about any physician."

Nasty and dismissive and condescending amongst other descriptive adjectives.

No Masks, Vax Proof to See Matches at Full-Capacity US Open

Spectators will not be required to wear masks or show proof of their vaccination status to attend matches at the U.S. Open when the tennis tournament returns at full capacity next week, one year after all fans were banned from the event because of the coronavirus pandemic.

“The goal is not to prevent all cases of COVID. The goal, really, is to be certain that we don’t have an outbreak of COVID that’s going to be unusual or that we would regret,” Dr. Brian Hainline, a U.S. Tennis Association first vice president and member of its medical advisory group, said on a conference call with reporters on Wednesday. “We’re still relying on the goodwill of people. The unvaccinated — although it’s not going to be enforced — they really should be wearing masks. I expect many vaccinated individuals are going to be wearing masks, as well."
...
Did NY not learn anything during the horrible outbreak they had when all this started?

Big mistake IMO. Relying on the goodwill of people as far as wearing masks if not vaccinated has gotten us into the spot we're in now. Naive and just kicking the can down the road mentality.

Fair? or Not Fair? ($2,400 a year cost for unvaccinated)

Delta Air Lines announces a $200 monthly health insurance surcharge for unvaccinated employees

Ed Bastian memo: COVID-19 update

( Delta CEO reveals he's still refusing to call it the Delta variant ) ... HA!

  • Effective immediately, unvaccinated employees are required to wear masks in all indoor Delta settings. This requirement will remain in place until community case rates stabilize.
  • Starting Sept. 12, any U.S. employee who is not fully vaccinated will be required to take a COVID test each week while community case rates are high. Those with a positive result will need to isolate and remain out of the workplace.
  • Beginning Nov. 1, unvaccinated employees enrolled in Delta’s account-based healthcare plan will be subject to a $200 monthly surcharge. The average hospital stay for COVID-19 has cost Delta $50,000 per person.
  • This surcharge will be necessary to address the financial risk the decision to not vaccinate is creating for our company. In recent weeks since the rise of the B.1.617.2 variant, all Delta employees who have been hospitalized with COVID were not fully vaccinated.
  • Effective Sept. 30, in compliance with state and local laws, COVID pay protection will only be provided to fully vaccinated individuals who are experiencing a breakthrough infection.
A friend of mine had to pay $500 more a month for health insurance through her husband's employer because she smoked. So she quit.

Absolutely. Ahh....religious beliefs.....

Then you have the smoking factor amongst many other issues.

Like saying smokers get charged higher health care costs due to health risks.

Wait, how bout diabetics?

Wait how bout ... Etc........
Smokers often DO get charged more. This has already been happening in other situations for years.

It is a very dangerous game these politicans are playing. Playing with children's health and lives.

I don't see this happening anywhere else. Sure, there are some people who don't wear a mask when they should. But that is because they are selfish and "don't want to" "they don't help" "blah, blah, blah". It is not because any politcal leader is telling them they don't have to.
Don’t call people selfish for not wearing a mask. You don’t know why. I actually was told at my dr appointment a few weeks ago not to put my mask back on when she came in the room. While the nurse was doing my vitals my O2 level was very low. Once I was alone in the room waiting for the dr I removed the required mask so I could breathe. Yes, there are people that are harmed by a mask.

If they do this then they should also do it for obese people, people with high cholesterol that do not alter their diets, people that smoke or drink, diabetics that don’t lower their A1C, people with high BP that don’t lower their salt and fat intake. I would sue them otherwise because it is discriminatory focusing on a single factor.

Unvaccinated people, riskier behavior: What is fueling L.A.’s coronavirus surge

This is an article from the LA Times (may be behind a paywall)

" Unvaccinated people riskier behavior is what is fueling LA's coronavirus surge'

I think you can apply this to every state in the country--- this virus is behavior driven,
a premise that has not been driven home enough by the experts. It has never really been explained that way: the experts just say 'wear masks"--- they needed to be clear that the virus is behavior driven.

IIRC Dr Fauci and others have been explaining that the virus is behavior-driven all along. So has Oregon’s Governor. I suppose they could scream louder. The trouble is, so many vaccine resisters hate Fauci and any public official who wants them to modify their behavior, wear masks, get vaccinated. They accuse them of lying. They won’t give up their freeeeeeeedom. So these are the people who think it’s their right to engage in riskier behavior. Sturgis is an example.

I am glad to see the airlines start to get themselves into line. After all, they were/are one of the biggest facilitators of the worldwide spread of covid.

Qantas is steaming ahead with its vaccination plan for all of its employees, and are 'planning' to resume international flights to places like the UK and North America in December.
They are also encouraging people to upload their covid vaccination proof to their frequent flier account on the Qantas app. Presumably that means only vaccinated people will be flying with Qantas pretty soon.

Why do so many unvaccinated people think they will be able to "manage the virus just fine" if infected?

Perhaps because they managed the flu "just fine" or managed chicken pox "just fine."

Or managed "just fine" a whole host of other ailments and infections.

Unvaccinated I never was arrogant enough to think I could sail through a case of Covid.

Why do people think the deaths and ventilators only happen to others?

they think it because pre-COVID D, the statistics showed mostly older people and people with pre-existing conditions getting seriously ill... the D version seems to be less choosy about victims, and some of the people who are refusing vaccines have been working and possibly even had COVID (mild), so they just do not see it as a threat, IMO. they also do not understand that they can spread the virus to others.

Or they just don't care if they spread it to others, some people anyway. Like some would get tested before a get together but other people - nope!

Yes they could have had a mild case of covid but don't they realize the Delta can still wreak havoc on their lungs? It's mostly the lungs being affected that kills people.

Care about people's lungs much?
Care about aunt Jean's lungs?
Grandpa's?
Their sister?
Young relatives such as children.
Best friend?
The crowd their in unmasked?

Care about anyone's lungs?

This list could go on and on.....

ETC...

they also do not understand that they can spread the virus to others.

Where does that lack of understanding come from? It has been known for decades that people spread colds, spread the flu, spread measles, spread chickenpox, spread HIV.

Do they not understand the blaring reports everywhere "highly contagious"? Do they need to be told what contagious means?

They read alternative news. Conspiracy "news."

Contagious means just getting a cold so cough into your arm/elbow. That will do the trick.

It's not true that people are harmed by wearing a mask. Even most people with a chronic respiratory condition can safely wear a face mask according to the Canadian Thoracic Society. The agency that develops respiratory guidelines for lung health professionals asserts that there is no scientific evidence to suggest that face coverings aggravate an underlying lung condition.

Medical reasons for why some people can't wear a mask

I hope your pulmonologist has you on oxygen therapy now to maintain your 02 levels, sounds like it dropped quickly in a short amount of time!
