Well, they aren’t complying in my area of Southern Oregon and are loudly saying they won’t comply on FB. That isn’t protest. That’s defiance that endangers public health. The sheriff won’t enforce the Governor’s mandates, so they are emboldened to do what they want. That leaves the rest of us sequestered in our homes doing our best to protect ourselves from those who only care about their personal freedom and who scornfully view the rest of us as sheeple. Meanwhile, we are one of the worst places in the country…because of these people. It’s extremely depressing and distressing.

Sadly, Oregon made it into our news today. For all the wrong reasons. Which is really unusual.
We generally hear a lot more about FL and TX ... because they have been doing so covid-badly.

In the US state of Oregon, the death toll from Covid is climbing so rapidly in some counties that it has organised delivery of one refrigerated truck to hold dead bodies and is having to send a second one. The request comes as the Delta variant tears through Oregon’s unvaccinated population.

Andy Murray hopes that more players choose to be vaccinated over the coming months as tennis faces a possible reckoning over its rate of inoculation among tour professionals, which is widely believed to be below 50%.

Murray, who faces Stefanos Tsitsipas in the first round of the US Open on Monday, was speaking in the wake of the USTA announcing on Friday that all fans must have received at least one dose in order to enter the grounds. As such, the only unvaccinated people in the stadiums will be many of the players on court.

A Louisiana National Guardsman is on the wrong side of the law, accused of raping a teenager who was quarantined in the Youth Challenge Program after she tested positive for COVID.

"These ladies were all positive for COVID," St. Gabriel Police Chief Kevin Ambeau said. "They were separated from the other cadets and quarantined. He went into the dorm where they were quarantined and committed this act. He didn't care if they were positive or not .... "

The chief added Mouton is not vaccinated for COVID-19.

COVID-19 is one of the top 10 causes of death in children in 2020

Child Covid-19 hospitalizations soar

While statistically the numbers are low compared to the adult population, tell that to the parents who have to watch their child suffer and struggle to breathe (and potentially die). From something that is preventable while following basic health measures. That's where the frustration and anguish comes from.

Who wants to play the odds that it won't be their child who gets sick or potentially develops long term complications or passes it on to a more vulnerable person in their family? Can you imagine how they'd feel if they infected someone who didn't recover?

I do think it's partly a cultural thing. There are plenty of countries around the world where children seem to have no problem wearing masks to school. They understand the importance of keeping themselves and their classmates and teachers as safe as possible.

I, too, think it's partially cultural. Americans don't like being told what to do. I prefer letting individual school districts decide what's best for them. If a district in a county has virtually no cases of the virus, the school board can decide to lift a mask mandate. If a community has a heavy infection rate, the school board should be able to require masks. I just don't think blanket rules work well because our communities are so diverse.

I'm not sure masks are all that helpful in schools, because kids are always fiddling and probably messing with their masks. Then, we have the issue of walking to and from school with friends who are not wearing masks and playing without masks.

School, itself, is a risk. I think a higher rate of vaccinated is probably the best option.

I recall a time when peanut allergies were in the news, and schools were banning peanut butter. I don't recall protests at that time. It seems parents understood it was a serious health issue. I don't have kids, so my recollections may not be accurate.
Is there a difference?

And the courts are allowing school districts to mandate masks over and over again. Look, if it's "unconstitutional" for a school district to mandate masks for public health purposes, then it's unconstitutional for them to send a girl home because her bra strap is showing.

You can't have it one way to protect these poor defenseless boys from thinking bad thoughts, yet be ok with exposing kids to an actual medical threat.

SMH. Unconstitutional...pfft.

This is not true. I don’t have time to look through nearly 100 threads where it’s been discussed. Do you work in the medical field? Either way, if one feels a surgical mask is more protective than a KN95, rock on. We all make the choices we feel are best for our individual circumstances.

i am finding the KN95s much more comfortable than all my cloth masks... I don't even wear them anymore...

I "think" I'm about to cut mine. I do cut mine all the time though and quite often get asked what salon I go to and they're amazed that it's the Salon of Moi. LOL

But I had been thinking of going back to salons and maybe get something like a spiral wave so I've been letting my hair get longer in anticipation of something new.
I stopped going to salons ages ago after a couple of horrible results.

Yesterday I wondered if there was such a thing as a robot hair cutting machine and came across this very clever young guy.

Maybe. And in that case anyone who feels vulnerable should take precautions rather than impose significant restrictions on children who have no say in the matter, imo.

I AM HAVING to impose significant restrictions on my life because of this minority view.........

DeSantis says "parents should make the decision".............. well over 65% of parents WANT masks. So which parents get their rights impinged upon?

The community "rights" over rule the individual.

I have tried and tried to no success to convince my Very Smart 40 year old daughter to get a vaccine.
Yesterday after my plea, she sent me two Instagram videos about people discussing
Why it's not necessary to get the vaccine. Instagram videos! FGS sake.
Yes, she's healthy. Although it seems to me that this delta variant doesn't care about that.
She keeps telling me, "I'll be fine Mom".
She is smart, successful and busy (no children).
I try hard not to worry...

you are sooo not alone. I have a number of friends going through this.. putting great strains in and on the families.......

Clearly the US is not like NZ or Australia in this regard. We are the “give me liberty or give me death” folks, after all.

21 months (give or take) into this pandemic, it’s almost amusing in a perplexing way that some seem to not grasp that the US is never going to handle this pandemic or respond to it like other countries. We just aren’t.

If the point of repeatedly perseverating on this is that the US is a bunch of idiots, ok. I get that thought process and can’t even say I necessarily disagree to an extent. But I’ll be honest, it’s amusing at this point that some still seem genuinely surprised or shocked by it. Or maybe there’s not any actual genuine surprise or shock and it’s just some who feel the need for whatever reason to continue pointing out the same thing for months on end.
I'm an American and I'm not amused at all by our general inability to do what we need to in order to save lives. I don’t think it's who we've always been, but what we've become, and I'm disturbed by it. Maybe I'm naive, but I think we can be and do better than this.

I so agree, Jane. As I have said to so many over recent years.... it has been a rude awakening for me to see how selfish and greedy
We, Americans actually are.

Hostile school board meetings have members calling it quits (clickondetroit.com)

A Nevada school board member said he had thoughts of suicide before stepping down amid threats and harassment. In Virginia, a board member resigned over what she saw as politics driving decisions on masks. The vitriol at board meetings in Wisconsin had one member fearing he would find his tires slashed.

School board members are largely unpaid volunteers, traditionally former educators and parents who step forward to shape school policy, choose a superintendent and review the budget. But a growing number are resigning or questioning their willingness to serve as meetings have devolved into shouting contests between deeply political constituencies over how racial issues are taught, masks in schools, and COVID-19 vaccines and testing requirements.

In his letter of resignation from Wisconsin's Oconomowoc Area School Board, Rick Grothaus said its work had become "toxic and impossible to do.”

“When I got on, I knew it would be difficult,” Grothaus, a retired educator, said by phone. “But I wasn’t ready or prepared for the vitriolic response that would occur, especially now that the pandemic seemed to just bring everything out in a very, very harsh way. It made it impossible to really do any kind of meaningful work.”...

School boards, teachers, doctors, nurses, first line responders.......we will be losing so many, and sooo many others will not venture to go there.
It's almost as if..."why bother".

We as a country were not always like this- During WWII and 9/11 we pulled together- then we saw the development of what was termed the 'me "generation: never thought much about it - until the pandemic struck us--- Now it is all about "me me me' for most people- the internet has done immeasurable harm by virtue of social media- where there is so much unchecked misinformation, outright lies and conspiracy theories: it has brought out the worst in so many people it really has.

Unfortunately, the harassment and resignations leave QAnon followers an opening for their latest plan…
