This is why I question if planes can truly be disinfected. The seats are cloth and I’m sure they aren’t getting shampooed prior to being sprayed with a disinfectant. Once again, my understanding of cleaning comes from what I learned about animal shelters. Many believe they can spray the kennels down with bleach and it’s disinfected. But it has to be scrubbed clean of body oils and dirt first. Otherwise the disinfectant just sits on top of the body oils and does not penetrate to the surface to disinfect (this is also why hand sanitizer is not as good as washing your hands).

Clorox wipes are handy but spray cleaners are probably more effective because you can spray a counter or faucets and let the liquid sit for awhile and kill germs. The moisture from the Clorox wipes probably dissipates too soon to truly disinfect.

Very informative, ty,

Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation commits $100 million

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation said it will spend up to $100 million to improve detection, isolation and treatment efforts for the new coronavirus. It also hopes to accelerate the development of vaccines, drugs and diagnostics. “Multilateral organizations, national governments, the private sector and philanthropies must work together to slow the pace of the outbreak, help countries protect their most vulnerable citizens and accelerate the development of the tools to bring this epidemic under control.

All 10 people — one of whom is American — have now been taken ashore for treatment at local hospitals.

Princess Cruises said that a guest who later tested positive for coronavirus sailed from Yokohama, a port city south of Tokyo, on Jan. 20 and disembarked at Hong Kong on Jan. 25. That person did not report any symptoms while onboard, but later tested positive for coronavirus.

Warning, germaphobes,
THE SABATEURS:

Yesterday I watched a video of an older woman spitting into the stack of paper towels that were left for the high rise dwellers to negotiate their way in the elevator.
Thought provoking.

Coronavirus: Baby tests positive 30 hours after birth prompting fears infection can be transmitted in the womb

The news emerged from Wuhan, the epicenter of the virus which has now infected about 25,000 people worldwide, where the child was born to a mother who had previously tested positive for the disease before going into labor...When medical professionals tested the infant 30 hours later, the result came back positive for the virus. The infant was then transferred to the Wuhan Children's Hospital, which has been designated by the Chinese government as the treatment center for all infected children. The infant, now three-days-old, is said to be in a stable condition but is still being closely monitored, announced the hospital via a post on its official social media account.....The possibility that the coronavirus could transmit between mother and unborn child has come after it was revealed that it was detected in the loose stool of the first patient identified in the US, a finding that had not been reported previously among cases emerging from China (e.d. Another cruise ship with 3,600 on board quarantined in Hong Kong

Three people who tested positive for the novel coronavirus were on board the World Dream cruise ship during a previous voyage that took place between Jan. 19 and 24.

The three passengers are from mainland China — all of them got off in Guangzhou on Jan. 24.

Around 30 crew members have already declared that they have symptoms of the virus. Three of them have been taken to local hospitals for treatment.

:(

I’ve been meaning to ask, I wonder how many illnesses and deaths in China are children.

I've only been able to find ages of 48-89 reported as ages of deaths that was reported in the last week by the Journal of Medical Virology. No children among the numbers. As to illnesses of children, I just posted above about a newborn, Coronavirus: Baby tests positive 30 hours after birth prompting fears infection can be transmitted in the womb but haven't seen age breakouts yet. I'll post if I come across later in my wanderings around the net.

... two planes carrying the Americans from Wuhan arrived at Travis Air Force Base, southwest of Sacramento, California.

One of the planes will offload passengers at the base while the other will refuel and continue on to Miramar Marine Corps Air Station in San Diego.

The passengers will be subjected to a 14-day quarantine upon arrival.

My local news this morning has reported that 70 people evacuated from China will be quarantined at Camp Ashland, a national guard camp next to a very small town in Nebraska. We have a hospital in nearby Omaha that treated 2 patients with ebola a few years back.

I think it's far worse in Hubei province than anyone expected it to get so fast. Outside of Hubei the numbers seem much more manageable. So in somewhere like the UK or US they're downplaying it because there's no need to ramp up fear for a situation that is quite minor right now in those--and similar--countries. But in Hubei it has totally overwhelmed the healthcare system and it sounds terrible there :(

But that's exactly what they did in China. Only a handful of diagnosis, then a few hundred. And it was all downplayed until it was just spread everywhere. It blew up after being downplayed. I'm worried it could do that so many other places. :/ But hopefully they caught it soon enough and isolated people soon enough here and other places...

It must be very worrying to have coronavirus on a cruise ship given how quickly disease like norovirus can spread.

It is terrible to read in other articles about babies and children being infected it must be so dangerous for them.

Thank you to all of you for your news updates and posts it is much appreciated.

Camp Ashland to hold 70 people as coronavirus quarantine site

I had thought that they changed the reimbursement requirements for those being brought back to their homeland? And that since WHO and US had declared emergency, the US government would cover costs for return flight. Perhaps gov'ment just covers cost of quarantine, not flight?

"The State Department says more evacuation flights for private U.S. citizens may be leaving Wuhan's International Airport on Thursday. The citizens need to have a valid passport and the evacuees need to reimburse the government for their portion of the flight."

I'm with the CDC and the WHO who as over the last two days has said again and again and again, even within one speech, that it cannot be prevented, only slowed down. MOO. Slowing it down helps prevent deaths, and prevents economic collapse so that thearapeutics can be identified, and work can be done on a vaccine to prevent.
