At my hospital we have masks available year round with signs asking anyone who has cold or flu symptoms to wear one. Unfortunately, very few people do until we ask them to. I'm hoping that with all the news that's focused on the corona virus, more people with comply. @JaneEyre I hope you feel better soon!!
Two weeks ago, last time I was there, there were no masks, which surprised me because it is flu season. I’m out in the sticks, though, so maybe not as professional as in the cities.

I forgot to copy it over to here, but I read advice on a BBC article today that anyone who's been in China recently and comes down with cold/flu symptoms should call the NHS 111 helpline for advice and support.

If you call that line they can arrange, if necessary, for a prepared ambulance to come out with the paramedics geared up, and the hospital can be ready to take the patient into an isolation area and treated by doctors and nurses who are wearing protective gear. All this might be scary but it will help enormously to ensure that if it is the new coronavirus that it won't be spread by someone sitting in a waiting area of a doctor's surgery or hospital. Chances are that it will be a cold or flu, but it's best to be safe.

Curious update..
Chinese media confusion over doctor's virus death

Chinese media have changed a report that a doctor who blew the whistle on the coronavirus outbreak has died of the infection.

The state-run Global Times said Li Wenliang had died in Wuhan but later reported he was instead critically ill.

The People's Daily had earlier sent out a tweet saying Dr Li's death had sparked "national grief".

How did the confusion occur?
Global Times and other Chinese media initially sent out reports that Dr Li, 34, had died from coronavirus.

''It was carried in other Chinese state media and picked up by international news organisations. The World Health Organization sent out a tweet expressing sorrow at his death.

But Global Times then carried a report from Wuhan Central Hospital saying that Dr Li's heart had stopped beating at 21:30 local time (13:30 GMT) and he was given resuscitation treatment. Dr Li was currently in a critical condition, it said.

The news of his death had triggered a huge wave of popular reaction on Weibo - China's equivalent of Twitter.''

wrt the New York Times article,
'Wuhan Ordered to Round Up Infected People'

(sorry, can't read much of the article at a time, before pop up obscures the page,)

?
Within Wuhan, the home to home check of each resident's temperature.
and interview of the infected
and then the round up
could become real intense,
for the Chinese people.

They're still reporting that the Wuhan doctor who first described the virus and tried to warn people, has died.

Got himself in trouble with the police when he tried to warn the officials. 34 years old.

I googled around and found:

According to reports from the New York Times, senior Chinese officials have ordered the Wuhan government to “round up” and quarantine everyone in Wuhan who has been infected by the virus.

Sun Chunlan, a vice premier tasked with spearheading Beijing’s response to the outbreak, reportedly told investigators to go door to door checking temperatures and conducting interviews to suss out infected people who have not checked in with the authorities.

She said: Set up a 24-hour duty system. During these wartime conditions, there must be no deserters, or they will be nailed to the pillar of shame forever.

Plans for a mass roundup coincide with the completion of the Huoshenshan Hospital in Wuhan, which is scheduled to start taking patients today. The 600,000-square-foot facility was built in 10 days and contains 1,000 beds. But Wuoshenshan isn’t the only facility capable of housing huge numbers of infected people.

China is limiting access to ground zero of the crisis, forcing international media to rely on data from official government channels.

The Lancet, a respected medical journal, published research suggesting the number of infected could be as high as 75,815. Several academics in Hong Kong corroborate these findings. And across social media, unconfirmed reports suggest the crisis is much worse than what is being reported.

According to Al Jazeera, the Chinese government has broken ground on many similar facilities all across the country: Other facilities include a 1,000-bed hospital in Shenzhen, a 300-bed facility in Xuzhou, Jiangsu, another of unknown size in Harbin, Heilongjiang, and an 80-room building being repurposed as an infectious disease hospital in Nanchang, Jiangxi.

Is China setting the stage for a nation-wide roundup of coronavirus victims? The evidence is hard to ignore. The fight to combat the epidemic could be entering unprecedented territory.

From the above link:

ISCResearch on Twitter
The methods of the Chinese government are becoming more increasingly repressive in order to integrate supposedly infected people in #China into mass accommodations.

Chinese authorities are also spraying what appears to be a disinfectant in cities across central China.

Silly questions perhaps, but- how high does a temp. have to be to be considered a cv risk, and what about women experiencing "hot flashes" or who might have a slightly elevated temp due to pregnancy?
Is taking a temperature by pressing a machine against a forehead as accurate as one taken by ear or rear?

Hi everyone. I’m behind and look forward to catching up - I just wanted to say I watched every Coronavirus video on YouTube on my big screen TV for 6 hours last night, (yes SIX), reports from various international new stations and outlets from around the world, mesmerized while watching all this unfold and escalate globally. I have now seen every video on YT that exists I think. There are some videos I’d like to bring forward after I catch up if they’re not already posted. I wanted to post last night, but frankly I was speechless, which as you know is rare.

Heyya m
I 've youtube binged, as well.
Speechless, eh?
It's been a real eye opener wrt life in Communist China.
Looking forward to your thoughts.

Some of the videos have,
like a, residual emotional half-life.

ie Did that chit really go down?
Did I just see that?
WTF.
For reals?

I am not so sure that the attitude in San Francisco regarding the Chinese New Year celebration makes the best sense...

San Francisco City Leaders: It’s Safe to Celebrate Chinese New Year

"Carry on, nothing to see here, enjoy the party.".

This isn't about racism or anything else, just basic facts, it might be a prudent idea to delay the celebration this year.

I hope some of that is misunderstanding. It sounds like a recipe for putting people with flu into those huge conference centres with beds alongside people with the coronavirus?

As for the new hospitals to be built in other areas of China, after seeing how the numbers took off in Hubei, maybe that is a good thing to do just in case?

The whole thing seems so surreal! How many countries can we ban air travel to/from? At what point do you rescind those restrictions? With all the pandemic preparations being talked about by the CDC et al, the planet doesn't seem very prepared at all.

Googled,
"""normal" body temperature can have a wide range,
from 97F/36.1C to 99F/37.2C

A temperature of over 100.4F/38C most often means you have a fever caused by an infection or illness."

Exactly its a fact that there is a lot of traveling if your family lives in another country , its a fact that nationals of other countries mingle among themselves , its a fact . I am not a bit racist and I am side eyeing every delivery person today that even looks Chinese I don't know if your grandma just came from Wuhan to visit . I just don't but I'm MORE confident that if you walk in here and speak Spanish grandma's visit probably isn't an issue....but that's just me I like beating the odds when there isn't any.

Accuweather says warm spring weather could help contain the virus

AccuWeather founder Joel N. Myers said cold weather and weak sun in China right now could be helping spread the virus, but the warm weather coming this spring may help contain it.

Meteorologists looked at past outbreaks, including SARS in 2003, the 1918 Spanish Flu and U.S. flu data over the last decade. “There is less viral spread when the sun is strong and the temperatures are warm from May to September,” he said. “It’s possible the sunshine intensity, the longer daylight periods and the warmer weather could suppress the virus in the summer months.”

The scientist leading the UK's research into a coronavirus vaccine says his team have made a significant breakthrough by reducing a part of the normal development time from "two to three years to just 14 days".

Coronavirus: 'Significant breakthrough' in race for vaccine made by UK scientists

There are so many countries and scientists around the world working on a CV vaccine right now. I saw endless videos on this on YT.

They were talking about how the information is shared globally among the scientists via the internet. I’ll be bringing forward some of these videos after I catch up if not already posted.
