Coronavirus: Volunteers rush to help pets trapped in locked-down Wuhan

They may have escaped Wuhan, but many left without their pets and almost two weeks on, they fear for their animals which have been left without food and water.

Wuhan's mayor Zhou Xianwang said 5 million people had left the city before the restrictions began, leaving many pets trapped inside people’s homes, with nothing to eat or drink.

Lao Mao, the head of Wuhancat Animal Rescue Center, estimates there are at least 20,000 to 30,000 animals trapped in and around Wuhan with no one around to feed them.

Guys, how do we disinfect our iPads and smart phones when products like alcohol can damage them? I’m sick, as you know, and I’m freaking out about my touch-screens getting germs. This isn’t the first time I’ve failed at finding an answer online for this question. I once read that doctors’ phones are germs as all get out.
Have not experimented with it yet, but wondering if Seran(cling plastic) wrap would work?

Royal Caribbean bans Chinese passport-holders from its ships

After four guests on one of its ships were hospitalized to be tested for the new coronavirus, Royal Caribbean announced it is banning all Chinese passport-holders from its ships.

“Any guests holding a Chinese, Hong Kong, or Macau passport, regardless of when they were there last, will not be allowed to board our ships,” the company said. “Regardless of nationality, any guest or crewmember traveling from, to, or through mainland China, Hong Kong, or Macau less than 15 days prior to their sailing will be unable to board any of our ships.”

Coronavirus live updates: Outrage in China over death of whistleblower doctor - CNN

I am glad whenever I see restrictions that are not just limited to the Hubei province, as we know Guangdong for example is highly infected as well, and has also proven to have accounts of spread from human to human transmissions, for example S. Korea patient. I’m worried that some of the protective measures that were initially geared only towards Wuhan/Hubei may have been helpful only partially.

Beginning some research this morning as related to Guangdong:

Chinese cities try to flush out coronavirus patients by stopping cough medicine sales
February 9, 2020

“At least three Chinese cities announced in the past week that they would stop the sale of medicines for fever and cough, two of the major symptoms for the new virus, so that people will go to hospitals for treatment instead of self-medicating and staying home. Other symptoms of the virus include muscle ache and shortness of breath, which can then progress to more severe respiratory distress.

Hangzhou, an eastern city of almost 10 million that is home to Alibaba and many other Chinese tech giants, announced on Friday(Feb. 7, link in Chinese) that on the advice of its coronavirus management team, all pharmacies in the city would stop selling fever and cough medications (link in Chinese) effective the next day. The measure will apply as long as the city remains at the highest level of public health alert level. “Citizens with these symptoms should go to the hospital as soon as possible,” the notice said.

Following Hangzhou, Ningbo and Sanya (link in Chinese), two southern Chinese cities with a combined population of nearly 8.6 million, also announced over the weekend they would halt the sale of the two medicines, to better track and treat the coronavirus. Southern Guangdong province, home to the tech hub Shenzhen that borders Hong Kong, has asked residents (link in Chinese) to register with their real names at medicine stores when they purchase the two drugs, so officials can follow up with them.”

Coronavirus: 918 arrivals to Hong Kong from China asked to undertake 'self-quarantine' under new policy | Hong Kong Free Press HKFP

A government spokesman said the authorities will ensure that the people under compulsory quarantine will stay at home by conducting spot checks and telephone calls: “Most of the people under compulsory quarantine took their initiative to co-operate with the working staff to confirm that they are staying at their dwelling places through the real-time location sharing function of mobile phone communication applications,” it said.

However, local newspaper Ming Pao reported that a Hong Kong man – who was issued a quarantine order – said he would not follow the policy and would continue to go to work. The man took a bus from Shenzhen Bay to Mong Kok and shopped around for a while instead of going home, the newspaper reported.

A couple, who came back to Hong Kong from Shenzhen Bay, also went shopping for food before going home directly, according to the newspaper.

OMG this is awful I like animals better than humans.

I dont know why the people that fled their homes had not taken their pets with them.

I know its hard sometimes since lots of motels will not accept pets but the rule in our household is our dog is part of our family and if we had to evacuate for any reason, the dog is coming with us. Even if it means we will sleep in our vehicle. I could not leave my dog under any circumstances if I was evacuating for an unknown length of time.

Uggggg. Just thought of another horrible thing about other pets like Fish, Birds, Gerbils, etc. So not only dogs and cats will be starving but other pets as well. This is horrible news.
