Most packages and parts will come by ship, and I doubt the virus would live long enough to be a problem.

Panic is a common response, but it's rarely a commonsense response.

Let's, for now, assume this is like a yearly flu but one without a vaccine. So someone who normally takes the vaccine for health reasons, or someone who takes it because they're in a caring situation (to protect the person they're caring for) has a lot more reason to be concerned than most people do.

They, especially, should not panic, but maybe think about what they could do if it becomes necessary. So if you can stock up on a few things that will last, and will get used whether there's an emergency or not, that's a good idea. Get an extra box of washing powder and make sure you have a full bottle of bleach. Basic cough and cold treatments, sore throat sweets, tylenol, ibuprofen, some lemons, a couple of boxes of tissues. Some menthol gel or those menthol things you stick up your nose (yes, I know I have a way with words). Maybe some throwaway gloves. A spare bottle of hand soap and some hand sanitizer for each person in the family to carry in their bags or pockets. You could fill the gas tank in case at some point there's a state of emergency and it's hard to go out for gas during daytime hours when you're at work. Think about whether you have a job where you can work from home. Ask your workplace if they have a plan and ask if they can share any tips with employees, or maybe they need to stock up on hand sanitizers and plastic gloves?
I’m pretty much always stocked like this in the winter because of getting snowed in. And as someone who does a lot of animal care most people have a vet do, I am stocked with gloves and cleaners and weird med supplies (I’m the weird girl who owns an IV pole).

What I would add, as a germ-phobe, is to have gas gloves in the car, whether disposable or just cheap extras, as well as hand sanitizer. I never touch a gas handle bare-handed, and I always use hand sanitizer before even starting my car when I have left a public place. When someone in my household is sick, I do extra things like disinfecting doorknobs and faucet handles more often.

GTA private schools issue warning after parents say they were on same flight as coronavirus patient
''TORONTO -- Two private schools in the Greater Toronto Area have expressed concerns after learning that some parents were on the same flight as a Toronto patient who was diagnosed with the coronavirus.''

''Over the weekend, the principal of Somerset Academy, a private school in Markham, sent a letter home to parents saying that families who travelled to Asia will not be permitted onto the property for a minimum of 15 days from the date they landed in Canada.

School officials asked for proof in the form of boarding passes or stamped documents before kids are allowed in the classroom.''
''Meanwhile, other parents have signed an online petition titled “stop the potential spreading of the novel coronavirus in schools of York Region.”

In the petition, the author recommends schools track students who recently travelled to China and asks those families to stay isolated for at least 17 days.''

Officials warn of fake coronavirus alerts at GTHA universities and colleges
''Coronavirus alerts at some Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area universities and colleges on Monday have been debunked as fakes by officials.

Ryerson University tweeted at around 5:45 p.m. Monday that “Ryerson University is aware that there are fake social media posts alleging that students have been admitted to hospital with the coronavirus today. There are no cases of coronavirus at Ryerson.”

There is a global outcry that they need to make these bans permanent. I would post some, but many are editorials and groups and not within MSM articles.

50 million under lockdown.
That's crazy.
Not sure how this will play out.
No doubt, it will be interesting, to say the least.

“About 1,000 Americans were still stuck in the Chinese city at the center of the new coronavirus outbreak Tuesday, many hoping for seats on a U.S. government-chartered flight expected to leave early Wednesday. Anxiety in Wuhan, a quarantined city of 11 million people — and across Asia — was spreading as fast as the deadly virus.

The virus that emerged late last year had killed at least 106 people as of Tuesday, all of them in China. More than 4,500 others have been infected in more than a dozen countries, including five confirmed cases in the United States. More than 60 people in the U.S. were being tested for the disease.

Public health officials from the U.S. and China have warned people to expect many more infections. The disease can be transmitted by people who are showing no symptoms, and a top British infectious disease specialist said Monday that the actual number of cases around the world could already be close to 100,000.”

“Japanese authorities confirmed two new cases of the novel coronavirus on Tuesday, including a man who has never been to Wuhan in central China, where the disease originated.”

Coronavirus outbreak: Americans hope for evacuation from Wuhan as death toll rises

—-
  • Rising toll: 106 people are dead and more than 4,515 cases have been confirmed in mainland China, as the Wuhan coronavirus spreads across Asia and the rest of the world.
  • China on lockdown: Nearly 60 million people are under partial or full lockdowns in Chinese cities.
  • Global spread: There are more than 60 confirmed cases in 17 places outside of China, including at least five in the US. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention raised its travel precautions for China to its highest level.
  • Transmission: China’s health minister said people can spread the virus before symptoms show, but US experts say there is no clear evidence of this.

“At a bus station near the border between Hong Kong and Shenzhen, in mainland China, some residents tell CNN they are concerned about the spread of the Wuhan coronavirus.

“I’m worried. If they close (the border) now it’s too late. If they have (the virus) it is already in Hong Kong," said Chan Moon, 38, a property agent.

"Hong Kong is small and congested, if the virus breaks out -- I’m worried that it will be like SARS.”

SARS, or severe acute respiratory syndrome, was a coronavirus identified in southern China that infected 8,000 people and killed more than 700 between 2002 and 2003.”

Coronavirus Live Updates: Hong Kong Restricts Travel From Mainland China as Infections Exceed 4,500

“The number of known cases of the new virus increased by nearly 60 percent overnight. A shortage of test kits has led experts to warn that the real number may be higher.

Death toll exceeds 100 as number of infections skyrockets.
The outbreak of a mysterious new virus is rapidly spreading, the Chinese authorities said on Tuesday, as the official account of known cases jumped nearly 60 percent overnight and the death toll exceeded 100 for the first time.”

—-

“Thailand has reported 14 cases of infection; Hong Kong has eight; the United States, Taiwan, Australia and Macau have five each; Singapore, Japan, South Korea and Malaysia each have reported four; France has three; Canada and Vietnam have two; and Nepal, Cambodia and Germany each have one. There have been no deaths outside China.“

As Coronavirus Spreads, Hong Kong Limits Border Traffic With Mainland China

“HONG KONG — Carrie Lam, Hong Kong’s top official, said on Tuesday that the city would sharply cut the number of visitors from mainland China in an effort to control the spread of the new coronavirus that emerged in the city of Wuhan last month.

The limits, including the closure of rail and ferry service and reducing flight arrivals by about half, will begin at midnight Thursday. They follow days of increasing pressure from health care workers, epidemiologists and even pro-Beijing politicians who have traditionally supported Mrs. Lam’s government.

Hong Kong will close several of its border crossing points and increase checkpoints to detect fevers at those that remain, Mrs. Lam said. China will also stop issuing visas for individual travelers from the mainland, which make up about half of visitors to Hong Kong, she added.”

Confirmed in Germany

Germany confirms human transmission of coronavirus | DW | 27.01.2020

“Health authorities say the man who contracted the virus is from the state of Bavaria. It is the first known instance outside of China of the disease transmitting between unrelated persons.
The first person to have coronavirus in Germany was infected by a Chinese colleague who attended a company training in the state of Bavaria a week ago, health officials said on Tuesday.”

Asia faces steep economic price as it moves to curb links with China over virus fears
https://www.washingtonpost.com/worl...7664f2-414d-11ea-b503-2b077c436617_story.html

“The number of deaths from the coronavirus has risen to 106 in China with more than 4,565 cases of infection, even as countries in the region are also reporting more and more infected — nearly all of them tourists from China. Governments in the region are facing the stark choice of whether to cut all contact with infected regions and take a massive blow to their economies or rely on increased screenings.”

[...]

“China’s Center for Disease Control said a balance has to be struck between controlling the spread of the disease and mimizing the economic impact. A longer holiday is better, said the deputy director general, but “people need to live and work and emergency supplies need to be manufactured and transported.””

6. “Notably, the new coronavirus provides a new lineage for almost half of its genome, with no close genetic relationships to other viruses within the subgenus of sarbecovirus.” —> basically it’s saying it’s completely brand new to #coronavirus subgenus.

7. Very strange: So what is in this new mystery middle segment that has no #coronavirus history? The study authors continue: “This genomic part comprises also half of the spike region encoding a multifunctional protein responsible also for virus entry into host cells[30,31]”.

9. BOTTOMLINE: 1) Seafood market not the source. 2) This RNA #coronavirus mutates really fast. 3) has unusual middle segment never seen before in any coronavirus. 4) Not from recent mixing. 5) That mystery middle segment encodes protein responsible for entry into host cells.

10. TO BE CLEAR: I am absolutely not saying it’s bioengineering, nor am I supporting any conspiracy theories with no evidence. I’m simply saying scientists need to do more research + get more data. And finding the origin of the virus is an important research priority. Goodnight

Coronavirus appears to be contained for now, health experts say as they call for calm

“China’s reaction to the health crisis is among the reasons why we shouldn’t panic about the virus, experts say.

“It appears to be very well contained,” Mark Parrish, regional medical director of Northern Europe at International SOS, told CNBC Tuesday.

“The Chinese have done some extraordinary things, identifying the virus and its molecular structures and then instigating those quarantine measures in China where they have shut down these huge cities and stopped all movement. It’s come at a really bad time of the year ... It’s likely to have moved around China.”

“A total of 774 people died from SARS, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). The SARS crisis began in late 2002 and wound down in July 2003, staying in the news cycle for 8 months. No one has contracted SARS since. The disease was traced to bats. The Wuhan coronavirus has also been traced to animals, including bats, that were believed to have been consumed by people.”

Experts Warn of Possible Sustained Global Spread of New Coronavirus
Jan 27, 2020

“Some infectious disease experts are warning that it may no longer be feasible to contain the new coronavirus circulating in China. Failure to stop it there could see the virus spread in a sustained way around the world and even perhaps join the ranks of respiratory viruses that regularly infect people.

“The more we learn about it, the greater the possibility is that transmission will not be able to be controlled with public health measures,” said Dr. Allison McGeer, a Toronto-based infectious disease specialist who contracted SARS in 2003 and who helped Saudi Arabia control several hospital-based outbreaks of MERS.

If that’s the case, she said, “we’re living with a new human virus, and we’re going to find out if it will spread around the globe.” McGeer cautioned that because the true severity of the outbreak isn’t yet known, it’s impossible to predict what the impact of that spread would be, though she noted it would likely pose significant challenges to health care facilities.”

“Television stations across China will cut down entertainment programming, including popular variety show, to air more reports on the outbreak, according to a statement posted Tuesday by the National Radio and Television Administration.

The move comes as the country steps up efforts to contain the spread of the virus. Speaking at a meeting with United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres on Monday, China's ambassador to the UN said the country has "full capability and confidence in winning the battle against the epidemic."”

Hong Kong halts trains from mainland China as coronavirus spreads

“The U.S. Consulate in the central Chinese city of Wuhan, where authorities cut off most access Jan. 22 in an effort to contain the disease, was preparing to fly its diplomats and some other Americans out of the city on Wednesday. Japan and South Korea said they would send planes to Wuhan this week to evacuate their citizens. France, Mongolia and other governments also planned evacuations.

China's increasingly drastic containment efforts began with the suspension of plane, train and bus links to Wuhan, a city of 11 million people. That lockdown has expanded to 17 cities with more than 50 million people in the most far-reaching disease-control measures ever imposed.”

It's been interesting to watch the airport traffic in Wuhan. It's been crickets for sure. Only one plane out yesterday that went to Vietnam.

Only one out today to San Francisco so far, expected arrival 11:23 am today, a big Boeing 777. I'm surprised the media hasn't spoken to this on the morning shows I watched. (The green plane over the ocean in screenshot below)

Only one incoming later today from Rome Italy today so far. (The blue plane seen on map screenshot below)

Yesterday, it appeared that one plane was flying in, but it was rerouted to another airport (Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport) vs. going to original destination. The have listed flights, that turn into delayed/cancelled and never leave.

I too cannot see what the endgame can possibly be in China to control it with so many infected and such a long incubation period. Are they capable of having borders closed for months until a vaccine, or what? It would appear to be too widespread in China now to track MOO. This is going to be a long protracted event. Although futures in US are not down this am (folks investing in things like SQQQ made out well yesterday) , this is going to affect world economies and markets as mentioned above post. MOO

I wonder if the folks coming back to US are going to have to sign something to voluntary quarantine themselves.

Same. The people on lock down have got to eat. If you lock up millions, how are they getting food? And there is only for so long most people are able to stay inside without going crazy.
