If no one you know and love has had a severe case, then you might not realize how severe it can be. I was infected VERY EARLY because my husband, a senior Aerospace Engineer for Lockheed Martin, has to travel to the USAF and JNS bases for flight testing. It is his love, his life, his calling, much more than just a career. They call, he goes.

An AFB close to Los Angeles, more or less ( I can't be specific for security reasons) was doing some upgrades to one of the planes he supports. As soon as the holidays were over, he was traveling back and forth through LAX and DFW airports with the usual woven black cloth travel suitcase, and wearing business clothing including sweaters ( I'm indicating the types of materials because we know COVID-19 lives on certain fabrics longer than others).
He played a vital role in our nation's defense, just as he has for the past 35 years.

However, we were AWARE of COVID-19 being active in Los Angeles at the time of his last flight out there. I laid down behind his car and refused to move. I have the gift of second sight from God, and I could see there was illness surrounding the flight and the stay out there, then the rush flight home.
I couldn't stop him. He simply hopped into my BMW in the garage beside his, and took off with his suitcase sitting in the passenger seat. Quite hilarious to him that I'd be " almost hysterical" but when you SEE what's coming, you try to stop it. That's why I have the visions I have, to help others, to save the lives of others when possible.

He came home and hugged me in a huge hug before I had time to back away, as I didn't want to be close to the woolen sweater he was wearing or anything else until he'd showered and changed clothing.
5 days later, I became very ill. A high fever, chills, cough, too sick to really recall and recount, but it was a serious case of COVID-19.
I recall getting my personal Pulse Oximeter out ( for sale on Amazon for around $19 and invaluable for checking O2 amount in peripheral blood) and using it day after day. Despite the huge infection in my lungs, this time, my 02 sats stayed within low normal ranges. ( I have a history of frequent severe pneumonia, and am also a carrier for CF, which does have its own health risk, much like Sickle Cell trait can have.)

I will likely never be well again. I cannot walk up a flight of stairs without wheezing ( and NO PT, OT, or RT is going to solve that unless I get supplemental O2 which is not indicated when one's levels are low normal).

I do not sleep now, whereas I was a champion sleeper. I have a new Tempurpedic bed with an adjustable head level and foot level, and it costs about $12,000. Not a fun way to spend money, but it helps me breathe and the Tempurpedic foam gives me comfort as I lie in bed, coughing and wheezing.

I now take 5 medications per day, PLUS intermittent Corticosteroid injections which last a few weeks at a time, to try to improve my respiratory function, but the home meds. are not lasting 12 hours, when the dosage is once per 24 hours.
I cough until I vomit. EVERY day of my life unless I skip food.

Come to my beautiful house on a river, our paradise for our mature living, and feed me food and watch me cough until I am in the bathroom, vomiting.
Every single time.

Sit next to me, us both wearing masks, and listen to my expiratory wheezing. It is severe and nothing ( yet) helps.

Some of us, like me, were so sick, and have so much respiratory system damage that we DO WONDER every day if we'll live a normal lifespan. I do wonder what my cardiac output is, but I don't REALLY want to know, because little to nothing can help. I do want to know what my lung tissue looks like now, but no, not really, because knowing doesn't change the myriad of symptoms I try to manage every day.

How can a vaccine which prevents this greatly diminished quality of life be more harmful? Of course I'd die if my compromised lungs and airway are assaulted by COVID again.

I am not alone. I am one of MILLIONS living life post- Covid with a diminished health status, with illness where there was NONE prior, with restricted activities because breathing takes precedence.
I did nothing to cause this, everything humanly possible to avoid it, wore masks as soon as they were available, tried to teach my husband WHY he should stay home, prayed and asked God to please keep him home, and still, I was striken with the respiratory virus.

My husband didn't even believe I was " that sick" and had another flight planned. They cancelled it a day before he was to leave due to Lockheed realizing they were putting their best aerospace engineers in jeopardy with commercial flight travel to the AFBs.

I promise to you that every word I have written is true, and some details are likely omitted as I didn't keep a journal.

Thank you for reading. So many of us suffered and do still have disabilities from COVID, but are alive to tell what happened. I speak for those who have no voice on earth now.

Even though I had a mild case of covid, these months later I still have random wheezes... they are getting better as time passes. and the memory thing...in almost every conversation I have, there will be a word that I want to use,but for the life of me I can’t recall it. That has not improved at all.

I'm finding it hard to celebrate that most of the vulnerable members of my family are now vaccinated because of losing my poor aunt in December. It is just so unfair that Covid took her life too soon. She was so close to having another ten years or so of life to enjoy. My cousin cried when she had her's, because it would have saved her mum.

Also I wish I could turn my own clock back and not be living with long Covid one year after infection.

Wishing you the best of luck.

HKP

Hugs to you, Hong Kong Phooey. I'm so sorry for the loss of your aunt and the grief your family lives and relives. That's really all I know to say- I'm so sorry, and I care about your losses.

The brain fog is weird (and embarrassing in a work setting, I try to make jokes about it). For me, it's always a random, normal word I just cant bring to mind. So weird. Mine has def improved Rose.

I made a chocolate cake today and my son just asked how it is. I said well to me, it kind of tastes of soap you know? He said oh yes I know all about that. Mr HKP said it tasted great :D

Edited to bring back on topic...

We were just talking and I do think my symptoms have slightly improved since having the jab last Thursday. I havent been as exhausted. The weekend will be an acid test, as normally thats when the tiredness really hits.

I just wanted to say how I'd give up all trinkets for my Merry Maids back!!
I don't even think this small town, wealthy as many residents are, has any sort of housekeeping service. I do think they have a mold cleanup of houses that need it, and likely, one of those crimescene cleanup services. We had a daughter beat her mother to death with a hammer here in Pecan Plantation and I saw a commercial " death clean up" type service a couple of days later.

I just want my Merry Maids back! :)
I know we all vary in educational levels, and I had to teach my maids many things over the years. Caught one dusting my heirloom dining table with paper towels!!! No, we use microfiber dusters lightly, then a light application of a wood- oil based spray and movements are with the wood grain only.
Yes, I am a perfectionist, and the only way to get people to learn the right way is to show them, then let them show you in return. ( It's called Return Demonstration Technique).

Works for anything rational you want someone else to know about YOUR spaces and YOUR safety.

Does your area have NextDoor? You can often find recommendations for cleaning services (and really any kind of service you are looking for-handyman service, remodelers, etc.) there. I have found NextDoor to be full of great information from very helpful neighbors.

There have been reports (anecdotal only) that some long haul COVID victims have seen improvement in their conditions after being vaccinated. Maybe you will be one of the lucky ones.

Wow, I had no idea this was possible.
Thank you so much, and I'd appreciate positive thoughts/ prayers according to each person's beliefs.

I send the same to ALL other survivors with long term symptoms.

snipped

It does not alter your DNA or RNA.

It sends instructions to your RNA to make a certain protein that your body then learns to fight. If you should catch the virus, your body will recognize that protein and get rid of it quickly.

There is no altering.

Instructions are sent to the RNA, not the DNA.

jmo

I was coughing too badly to type this, but YES!!! 1000 times yes, this is correct!
IF we could alter DNA, we could cure genetic conditions such as Down's Syndrome after birth. ( Easiest example I could think of on short notice, not meant to discriminate).

Yes, but it didn't go well. She was physically disabled and " fibbed" on the question of " Are you physically able to do the job including surface and deep cleaning of this house, having seen the size?" Took 2 years for her to leave.

I'm going back to basics, y'all. I have a headache, worse cough, feel feverish, ache all over.
I think I have some mild meningeal irritation as my headache feels like my brain's too small in there ( and I know that's not true LOL).

So, to heck with the prescriptions once every 24 hour of non sedating meds.

NYQUIL, BABY, NYQUIL!!! ( Until I'm much better. I DO measure and time doses.)

Most times, if people really do understand how vaccines work, and how they have saved us from Polio, Smallpox, Influenza, and so many other killer infections, then what I'm sensing behind the militant words is fear.

People will use anger to cover up the base emotion of fear so many times, as you know. :) Our response is either to help a loved one deal with their fear, or walk away from all the negativity, which I gladly did by leaving social media ( again).

I agree with you. That being said, I was talking about the refusal to socially distance or wear masks. And the anger about masks. Because I do think the decision as to whether to get a vaccine is a personal medical decision, like @Black Widow said.

But I suppose the fear thing applies to it all. They’re afraid of the pandemic so they have to pretend it doesn’t exist. Or they’re afraid of the loss of control this has caused.

My mother used to tell me to use my words carefully as I might have to eat them. ( An old saying, for sure).

Well, I guess I did get enough vaccine with injection #1.
I now have a fever, my arm feels like it's on fire, is hot to the touch ( hotter than the rest of my befevered skin), I'm dizzy, my eyes burn and my head hurts.
Also, I don't want to talk about food, think about food, drink anything or eat, either. This is like full blown influenza in every way. I'm also sneezing and coughing which is hard to believe with the amount of prescription meds I'm on to keep down airway reactivity.

I can hardly wait to see what tomorrow has in store ( sarcasm).
My vaccine was Moderna, but I had a dose and a half. I guess it's a good thing I used to catch everything our patients had when they weren't in isolation. I had forgotten how often I felt this badly or much worse during all these years of lovely retirement ( 2o years but I stay current with everything published).

I look at it this way: If I could put up with frequent respiratory illness and general malaise ( I love that word- " malaise"- it confers so much!) for pay, I can put up with it for the sake of my very life. Ya think? :)

Shoot. That scares me. The vaccine can cause coughing and sneezing? Does that mean it can cause respiratory issues that are more serious?

I’ve gotten the first Pfizer vaccine and will go back in two weeks to get my 2nd dose! I felt terrible for four days at least after the first one, and am very nervous about the effects of the second one. I have chronic Lyme disease and am on strong medicine for that which may account for part of why I reacted so poorly. I figure getting it or not getting it are gambles, and decided to bet against coronavirus because I definitely don’t need long haul symptoms on top of everything else I deal with!

I also read that people who may have been exposed to COVID can have a strong reaction to the first dose.

I learned something new yesterday.. Or, at least, this is what the Paramedic told me. Usually, we massage an injection site in a circular manner for a few minutes ( if it's our arm, especially) to help the medication disperse into the tissues.
The main exceptions to this are iron injections and all the anti-coagulants.

Well, Paramedic Willett ( we should be on a first name basis by now LOL) told me they had just been instructed NOT to massage the arm injection site, and to inform the client not to, either.

I'm not sure why, but it could be related to the relatively new " COVID arm" we've seen photos of. That looks really painful and perhaps destructive to tissues to me, although I know it subsides in time.

So, don't rub your arm!

That’s what the nurse said to me too. I asked. But next time I may try moving my arm around because that’s always prevented me from being sore in the past.

With great respect to you, I'll still follow the recommendations of Dr. Seheultz and Dr. Campbell who showed again and again that many "cascades" of reactions occur better at higher temps, therefore they BOTH suggested against anti-pyretics. In MANY videos. But they both said analgesics for pain/soreness were ok (And they distinguished which OTC were analgesics that were ok, vs. those that were antipyretics which are for fever reducing)

Whether folks that don't have fever get as good as a response... not here on thread to debate... but I'll stick with them as to not taking stuff for fever as all here have said iirc they were taking only for pain and there are options.

Perhaps others can recall any links......if folks are interested in. My own thoughts after getting first shot.. and next one in a couple of weeks... I'll let my body do it's regulatory thing as to fever and avoid an analgesic that affects temperature also, and avoid anti-pyretics completely for the 24 hours if needed.

I'll step away as you are so great with your posts guiding so many.. thank you so much @10ofRods for your learned contributions to the thread.. just had to step in for 2 cents.

All MOO.

I’m on high dose Naprosyn for some condition I have. It’s prescription Naproxen Sodium (Aleve). I didn’t take it for two days before the shot and almost two weeks after. Screw it. I wanted to make sure my immune system reacted properly. So it’s been uncomfortable for me in the last couple of weeks.

But a co-worker of my mother and brother died of COVID recently; at 50. She was a very exuberant, social person. She left a 16 year old behind. She had diabetes.

I just learned today that a neighbor died of COVID. He was in his 40’s. Left behind a husband who told us. No health conditions.

So I will take the weeks of discomfort in the hopes of avoiding this thing.

Ouch! I have a couple cleaning ladies that come in twice a month. I love them. We drink wine together after they’re done sometime. We talk. We just increased their rate because they work so hard.

I might ask if they can do something special in the way of cleaning, now and then, like if something really needs it, but I would never lecture them on how to do their job!!

TRYING to get back to "Normal" in Southern California.
Not happening.
I've been fully vaccinated for a month.
Went to 4 restaurants for dine in. Nope.
Did I ever mention how much I hate this virus?
In case I didn't- I, absolutely and astoundingly hate this killer virus.
An invisible, sneaky, disgusting, killer.
YEAH. I hate and want to obliterate this invisible killer.
Period.
