Has it been established that she could have checked in by phone and was her phone dead due to lack of power? Just thinking out loud.

I believe that the last communication was with a friend via facetime at about 8:20PM where she told a friend that she was going to ask the security to assist with getting bottled water. Her phone stopped working around 9PM, but it's not known if the battery was dead or it was disabled.

Could you please link regarding information on the Airbnb, if possible?
The actual Airbnb listing was taken down, either by the owner or by the company.

I've done a search and there's dozens of lower cost listings in the vicinity of the airport. It was just incredibly bad luck she ended up at this one.

I've been on doctor's appointments all day and I could not check my phone until now, they found her, dead, oh dear!

They found a female body half buried and wrapped in plastic in the backyard, or at least very near the Airbnb. They are waiting for autopsy results to announce whether it is Carla.

I'm wondering the very same thing.

She checked into the Airbnb at 5PM the day before her birthday on Nov 27. She dropped her sister-in-law off at the airport earlier in the day. An Uber driver drove her to the Airbnb after touring the city for a couple of hours.

Sorry - off topic - is tapeworm the issue? A friend had a tape worm and it was the last thing that was suspected for almost 2 years.

All sorts of parasites. I think the tape worm can be a threat in fresh water lakes and water retention areas but internally burrowing ones are the main worry I think. That show is fascinating but it will make you scared of basically everything! I bet you friend with the tapeworm was skinnnnny after 2 years :/

I'm trying hard to catch up and hope I'm not aggravating anyone with my questions.
I've worked and lived in Jamaica and Cancun and I'm very aware of the dangers that exist in these locations.
In Jamaica, my crew eventually had to have an armed guard to escort us to the power plant. In order to get to the power plant the trip involved traveling at least an hour and a half one way. The trip involved traveling through the Blue Mountains. Prior to having the armed guard, about every day we (the three car car caravan) was stopped by the "mountain men, who were Castro sympathizers. They would shove an Uzi in your face, search the cars down and make you empty your pockets and pocket books before they would let you go. I've had an Uzi shoved in my face more times than I can count. It is not a good feeling.
My crew stayed in Kingston and you really could not leave the hotel and go for a walk or go to a restaurant without being with a group. It was extremely dangerous. I'm not even going to discuss working in Cancun, that's another story for later.

Maybe the power outage was a ruse to make sure nothing was seen on surveillance cameras and/or that the perp(s) couldn't be seen or identified in the dark.

Dang, it has been a very short time for a body identification. An autopsy is usually to find cause of death. If ID isn't possible then DNA is sent off for testing. WTH

Disgustingly sick and weak for 2 years with all sorts of digestion issues that could not be understood in a cold climate. Eventually a holistic nutritionist asked the right question.

Unfortunately tourists usually think they are in paradise and don't even give safety a thought.

Swear word! For some reason I searched, and Costa Rica is very unusual in having piped-in drinking water to homes. "It’s generally safe to drink tap water in Costa Rica, except in the most rural and undeveloped parts of the country. " Health in Costa Rica - Lonely Planet

Given that, if she went and asked the guard to bring her some bottled water, who knows how that would have been interpreted.

Oh boy! So it must have been this driver that picked her up but who was it.

No, the body was found on the property. Probably no driver.

The 5 am pick up was most likely a story told by the security guard. Poor Carla never left the place.
