Crafts To Do During Covid Restrictions

I have moved back to my youngest daughter's horse quilt. She wants to be a vet so my quilts for her are animal themed.

It has been a work in progress for about 5 years. I got started in the spring of 2015 and my house sold in the fall of 2015. In 2016, I got back on it but I did some cutting mistakes when I misinterpreted the pattern. I thought I got it right, luckily found some coordinating border fabric, and continued on.

In 2017, I was diagnosed with cancer so again it was put on hold for over a year. In 2018, after being stable for months, I went to NH to visit my aunt. I wanted her help to get it back on track. She was 2 years out from breast cancer and I was a year out from my bone marrow transplant. The two of us, our short hair and pallor skin, taking naps mid day, worked away at it. She is an amazing quilter and mentored me through what needed to be done.

We got the top assembled. She taught me to miter the corners. When I returned to FL, I started hand quilting the center 10 blocks. That was last winter. This past summer she taught me machine quilting. Now I am machine quilting the outer 10 blocks. It is a full size quilt so the inner squares would have been difficult to do on a regular machine, which is what I have.

I made a horse head template and I am hand stitching in the center to keep the batting in place. I have 6 blocks left. Then I can start sewing the borders down.

I love this quilt (and all your quilts that I've seen photos of)! When I was young, I would have been thrilled to have such a quilt! I was horse-crazy for quite a few years.

I also love the story about your aunt helping you with this quilt. I hope she is doing well.

Years ago I took a quilting class and hand-pieced a quilt top, more or less crib-size, with each square a different design. I never went beyond that, but I know where it is. If I can find it, I'll take a photo. It's one of many unfinished craft projects. I thought I might get some finished during quarantine but I seem to be glued to my laptop most of the time...sigh.

Some people collect baseball cards, some people collect stamps, some people collect UFOs - Un Finished Objects!

Quite a collection in my sewing room, that's for sure.

Sounds familiar! When I was downsizing, I went thru my fabrics and donated them. Our sewing guild hosts sewing camps for kids in the summer. They were thrilled to have a variety of fabrics as it gave the children different experiences. I’m hoping the summer camps can come back this year.

Oh I’d love to see a photo! My aunt is doing great. They have moved to the east coast of Florida now. She is about 4 hours away. I’m on the west coast. This past summer she taught me to make Christmas tree skirts and how to machine quilt them. I made one for each of my girls.

My oldest is a marine biologist so hers is white on white nautical on the front and sea life on the back. My youngest loves the outdoors. Hers is also white on white nature things (plants, butterflies, etc) and a nature or garden theme on the back.

They are both reversible so they could use them on a specific tree theme if they wanted to. I found the photos of the sea life one. I’ll see if I can find the photos of the nature one.

Found it, photo attached.

Hahaha! I love UFO and SABLE. I did throw out a few things that I knew I'd never finish. But still have plenty.

Those look lovely. I have an appliquéd and quilted tree skirt but it's store-bought.

I made a tree skirt once... it was Christmas one side and Chanukah on the other... so they could decide, or change up the skirt as they wanted.... never made one after that and never took a picture. They still use it!

You know, they would probably welcome suggestions, especially low-cost ones. So if you have an idea, let them know. I'm always scrambling to figure out the next one

Valentines Day is coming up! Spray paint old puzzle pieces, you can get puzzles at Goodwill for a dollar. One 1,000 piece puzzle will do. Spray paint them randomly, some pink, red, white, add glitter, make a small open heart shape wreath, glue pieces together, slip a ribbon through, it is a Valentines Heart...

You can also do the wreath first, then paint it. This is a fun project for kids. And who doesn't love glitter?!

Me. That would be me. Lordy, I cant stand that stuff. LOL!!!

I was reading about painted rocks that people leave in places for others to find. Little paint kits should be inexpensive. Smooth rocks are usually found by water.

On a sewing video recently, a commenter stated they’d found a rock with the video presenter’s business name and address on it. The commenter was in one state and the presenter was in another state.

Then, in another instance, there is a lovely public garden where people could leave painted rocks with inspiring messages on them. Others walk thru and read them.

As I was learning about this, it made me think of your project bags.

Glitter is a curse! I got one Christmas card with glitter from a friend and I keep finding glitter bits all over the house.

I have seen photos posted on NextDoor of painted rocks in peoples' neighborhoods.

I have 4 squares left on the horse quilt. It feels good to finally be making progress on it. Since the fabric is so dark, I think I will make a signature triangle, in a lighter color, for a corner on the back. Then I can sign and date it.

I always have some other small project to work on and this week it is designing a dog quilt. My goal is to make it a hanging wall quilt. I found a panel with really pretty colors. Each of the 12 dog prints are 9" square and I have them all cut apart.

I am learning to make a 9 patch dog head block as a coordinating block. I really like this video and how the lady cuts it out. I am on my 2nd attempt to figure out how to do it without using the Magic 8 method. My scraps of fabric are not big enough to do it like the lady is doing it. But it's a really nifty way to cut half square triangles.

So cool! I am digging through my papers for something nice... have plenty of cardboard! Woot! I got a miniature room kit to play around with... of course I did not follow directions... made things my own way so it looks goofy as heck...
Hey, I'm doing one of those rooms! Of course I didn't follow directions, but I'm having fun making up goldfish bowls and scary masks to hang on the wall. My horseshoe is perfect, though. Who knew how hard it is to make a square box from paper cutouts?! SMH. Anyway, mine is wonky, too, but I'm having too much fun to care.
