Crafts To Do During Covid Restrictions

  • #321
My Aunt has been teaching herself, and me, how to preserve amaryllis bulbs for the holidays. She found some bulbs for $2 and some in a kit for $7. The pound of wax was $0.37! The can of spray paint $5.

She soaked the bulbs in warm water overnight. Then peeled off the outer skin. I told her they looked like onions. Ha! She cut the roots off to make a level base.

She melted the wax on the burner of the grill since it was such beautiful weather here. She dipped each bulb in the wax, let it drip, dipped it again maybe 6 times. They dried overnight and she’s been spray painting them today. They look like candied apples!!

They sure do! I guess they won't bloom after that treatment.

Yes actually they do. The wax holds the water in so you don’t have to water them.

Amazing! I have never had an amaryllis so don't know much about them, but they are beautiful in bloom.

Now I want one. :)

Or would my cat try to eat it?!

Me too! She made 3 for her secret Santa gifts. The other 4 are for herself.

That's a beautiful quilted piece on the table. It looks like it might be octagonal. I love the snowflake fabric with the white. Did you make it, perchance?

That’s a table topper my Aunt made. I’m at her place. I was just walking around taking pictures of her holiday displays.

I love these! All the little critters on the back of the buck, so cute.

Your aunt is a talented quilter too.

Someone gave me one but I have to keep it at work because it could poison my cats. I did bring it home to repot it this weekend, though.

Good to know, thanks.

My Aunt is making a table topper for her secret Santa gift lady. It’s a “disappearing 9 patch block” which is really cool.

She helped me with my tea quilt. I needed to reduce the bulk in the seams. She showed me what to do.

Before I left to come home today, my aunt walked me thru how to make a different table topper. This one is for her neighbors.

It is a quilt as you go method. Lay the backing wrong side up. Lay the batting on top of the backing. You start with a 6 1/2” focal square and add 6 1/2” strips and 8 1/2” strips to it. Pressing each seam as you go. Then you trim the long edges straight. Then add a narrow border, a wider border and binding.

There is someone selling these cork ornaments on the Nextdoor app. They look pretty easy to me. I was thinking it could be a snowman too if you change it a bit.

Finished 4 kitchen towels today. Found the towels $1/each at a dollar store. They only had gray and navy. I figured I could find Christmas prints to match the gray easier than the navy. These will be for my 2 girls and my 2 nieces. All 4 of them have their own place now.

A few years back I found a pattern for crocheting a hanging ring to hold full size towels. That way, I can switch out any towel hanging on my stove handle frequently. All of my friends wanted a set. They've held up really we. I'll post a picture sometime.

I decided the towels needed potholders / hot pads. I was out of the gray Teflon fabric. I put a layer of insulbright and a layer of batting. They’re puffy and thick so they should be fine.

You know, I just couldn’t leave those leftover pieces of Christmas fabric sitting there. So I dug out the terrycloth fabric I got for cheap in GA. I made 4 beverage napkins for each set. I think I’m done. Maybe. LOL!!!

I really wanted a NorSari for the winter but they are $150. So I got my husband one for Christmas, made out of some pretty rugged stuff that will hold up to chores and getting on the tractor to plow snow. And I made a pattern for myself. Because mine is lined with Polar fleece, I hand sewed the whole thing. It's going to be a blessing in the frigid temperatures when doing chores!
