CT - 32-year-old man held captive by stepmother Kimberly Sullivan since age 11, weighs 68 lbs, sets fire to home to escape, 17 Feb 2025

I don't think the victim blaming by KS's attorneys is going to be a very effective defense. All the prosecutors have to do is show the video of S being carried out in a fireman's arms and the testimony of his uncle, who thought he looked like a concentration camp escapee. The medical testimony will be devastating, as will S's own words.

I waited a bit before reading this article because I knew my BP was gonna skyrocket just from the snips I read here. This current tactic of the defense, well he has always been emaciated and DCF cleared her back then so obviously it's not her fault he is starved. Not worried about this tact. S is now receiving appropriate care, and is recovering nicely. You bet your butt he has gained weight with appropriate nutrition available to him. His recovery will belie KS and her excuses. A jury will see right through it. S will be able to use his voice, the one he has recently found, and tell the court what his experience in that prison was like.

I haven't seen defense attorney really attempt to explain why the locks were there on the outside of the door of his storage closet sized room. I think he may have at one point deflected by saying oh well those locks have always been there since the family moved in. Which frankly doesn't cut it. There were multiple bedrooms in that home. at least three children grew up in it. Does he really think anyone will believe the man was in that tiny little room by choice? in a house full of rooms? When it was just him and his stepmother living there? GTFOOH. MOO.

Attorney for Kimberly Sullivan says her stepson was not held captive
Going forward it's going to be interesting seeing how the charges against KS unfold.
Going to trial is super dicey with the great possibility of a conviction and a prison sentence.
I don't see her taking a plea deal that includes being incarcerated though.
I see her lawyers going for a plea deal with just restrictions and no prison time.
Hopefully the state doesn't cave and forces a trial and who knows, S may very well want to testify against her.

If there is a trial I see her attorneys looking for that one possible hold-out, someone who has been falsely accused of child abuse/neglect and can't get over it.
Another hopeful is the state checks out all the jurors chosen to see if they have any CPS/police records/investigations.
Double checking because I gather that is a question they would be asked during voir dire.

imo

Lawyer says "S"'s weight was investigated 3 x by CPS.
When he was 4,8 and 12 and a pediatrician cleared "S".
When asked by Chris Stewart if he's spoke to doctor Kaloidis said he doesn't even know if he's alive, he's only had the medical records 1 week.
KS made no decisions the dead father did.
Families have different dynamics and lawyer said KS claims to have had a good relationship with "S", they met in the kitchen every morning.
She is not forced under law to force "S" to take care of himself.
If "S" can not testify credibly the case is over.
All of a sudden Kaloidis is not claiming the locks were on all the doors when they bought the house. lol
Under Connecticut law he has no right to a deposition by "S".
People that came forward were only looking for their 1 5 mins of fame.

Kaloidis would do his client a favor by shutting up.

IMO

New witnesses have come forward since her arrest and Kaloidis has yet to see the list but laughed and when asked about them, saying again their " 15 mins of fame"
Something tells me he won't be laughing when he sees what they told LE.

Agree. Yes, he should staunchly and vigorously defend his client. In court. He complains from one side of his mouth about how his client may not get a fair trial because of publicity but then doesn't shut up with the other side of his mouth making the public even less sympathetic to his client with the garbage he keeps speaking.

Maybe he should focus more on crafting his defense for trial and not for the public. We aren't buying what he is selling. The optics are just plain bad.

If she claims the father didn't believe in doctors.... do we know if he (the father) was getting medical care while he was sick and in wheelchair before he passed away? If you don't believe in doctors for your kid then you should believe the same for yourself, Right?

That's brilliant.
It needs to be sent to the Connecticut prosecutor's office just in case no one there thought of it. lol
It never crossed my mind nor have I seen it addressed anywhere, especially when her lawyer John Kaloidos is before the camera.

As far as the "cleared" by a doctor BS the attorney is now spouting about S.

1) I'll believe it when I see it.
2) If there were concerns at 4, 8, and 12 over S re: his weight or lack thereof, great enough to involve a medical doctor, I doubt very much he was simply "cleared" without some sort of recommendations to help him gain and hold weight. JMO
3) if dear old dead daddy didn't believe in doctors who took him to one at 4, 8 and 12? can't be both ways, he either received appropriate medical and dental care during childhood or he didn't. Which is it Kaloidis?

IMO:
It could be the same thing that happened when the school started questioning KS/daddy about S being skinny, being hungry, taking food etc.called CPS
KS removed him from school.
Did the doctor do tests, had a medical plan for S with follow-up visits etc then KS/daddy may have stopped his medical care.
Did the doctor see signs of abuse, did he also call in CPS?
CPS may have sent/brought S to the doctor and not the parents?
Kaloidis did say that the parents were investigated 3x with all unfounded.
From what S has said he was told by KS/daddy what to say to authorities when a child.

Winner! Winner!
Kaloidis is his own worst enemy and KS's too.

Since Superior Court Judge Joseph Schwartz allowed media footage in his courtroom for KS's appearances is this a good indication that should she go to trial he will allow it to be televised?
I have a feeling that her lawyer Kaloidis will fight to try and prevent it but judges do have the last say.

example

Hum, she's very confident that nothing will happen to her, isn't she? What a terrible person.
KS has not spoken publicly and I see her lawyer as the one projecting arrogant confidence repeatedly saying that his client is "shocked" by the allegations, "blown away" and adamantly denies these allegations, and is falsely accused.
Amazing since Kaloidis's said all this and more at his first media appearance and had yet to see anything except the arrest document.
Discovery should change his tune.

"The I-Team first told you last month, currently, there are no homeschooling regulations in Connecticut or any system in place to monitor students once they are removed from school".

Absolutely mindboggeling and extremely dangerous.

Connecticut must have some damn powerful home-schooling organizations/lawyers who have been able to get parents free-range with their school age children's education/well being from their politicians.
imo

Nothing yet if her cellphone has been returned and she wants the "protective order" lifted so she can return to work.
Yikes! Looks like she has no problem putting herself back in her community that is if her prior employer will even bring her back.
I'm curious what else this protective order prohibits her from doing and the return to work is a ruse?
imo

Records show that MV1 was admitted on 2/18/25 at 0251 hours. Due to the threat of respiratory failure MV1 was Intubated. It was documented that the medical facility showed no medical records on file. This means that any medical facility that shared the same system as this one, showed no history for MV1. An early exam of MV1 described him as Cachectic and appears younger than his stated age.

Cachectic, or Cachexia, is also referred to as Wasting Syndrome. It has to do with significant unplanned weight loss and the deterioration of muscle mass. This condition is seen in individuals who are suffering from chronic diseases such as heart disease and/or advanced cancer.

MV1 was described as being near starvation. Continuing with early reports and observations from medical staff, it is documented on 2/18/25 that MV1 is severely malnourished with a body mass index (BMI) of 11. Speaking with medical staff for MV1

this is about half of what it should be. It was also explained that anything under 16 is considered starvation and anything under 13 is life threatening. It's also noted in this report that Refeeding Syndrome needs to be avoided.

Medical staff at the facility stated that Refeeding Syndrome is a life-threatening condition brought upon by severe malnutrition whereby introduction of foods and fluids can have fatal consequences due to the fact the body cannot process the intake properly. MV1's body is not equipped to handle or breakdown the nutrients. This can have a domino effect of electrolyte imbalance, which will lead to heart abnormality which will lead to heart failure.

Records show that once extubated, MV1 begins to speak with staff and is immediately providing them with information about his situation stating that he has been abused at home and not allowed to leave for several years. Staff noted their concern of a hostage situation.

As the medical reports continue, it notes that MV1 is extremely thin and weighs 31.2kg (approximately 68.7 lbs) MV1 is 5'9". MV1 continued to speak with staff about his situation which was consistent with what he had initially stated to Officers. MV1 stated that he set the fire because, he states, "I wanted my freedom". He stated that he had been locked in his room since he was 11 years old. Staff notes that at this point MV1 is fully oriented, his thoughts are clear and he is absent of suicidal ideation's. As staff continues to speak with MV1 he talks, with a constricted affect, about what he missed out over the past twenty years. It's documented that over the past months his mood was angry, he was always hungry and that he has been tossing and turning in his sleep for the past few years. Here MV1 opens up about his life stating that he was pulled from school in the fourth grade because his parents were tired of DCF being called on the family because he was always hungry.

MV1 explained that he was always asking other students for food, taking other students food and eating out of the garbage. When asked, he stated that he doesn't know basic technology and described spending his days reading and watching cars pass by his window. Note that at the end of Detective Pesce's interview Det. Pesce attempted to help MV1 work an iPad and it was clear that he had no concept of how it worked.

Evaluations of MV1 noted that he had decreased ability to use his arms for pushing and pulling. Decreased ability to use legs for bridging and pushing and an impaired ability to control his trunk for mobility. His muscle tone was abnormal with decreased flexibility and strength. MV1 had decreased endurance and activity tolerance and impaired balance with impaired motor function. He has bilateral knee contractures. A condition where the knee joints become stiff and cannot extend. Severe muscle wasting and severe subcutaneous fat loss is noted in the clavicle and temple.

During an assessment for mental health MV1 tested positive for PTSD and depression. During these assessments MV1 noted that he was forced to urinate in plastic bottles that he would empty by dumping out of his window and when he defecated he would do so on his floor using newspaper. When asked, he could not remember the last time he showered. He's noted as being developmentally delayed at this time having

an adolescent cognitive level. When provided a task to complete, MV1 demonstrated difficulty problem solving, multitasking and sequencing. He became frequently overwhelmed and needed verbal cues to continue. It is noted that he was unaware how to use a microwave
This is absolutely horrible! He has been captive for more than 20 years! What drives someone to do this to someone?!

The case is back before a judge on Wednesday, July 2, for another procedural update. Sullivan’s appearance has been waived for that hearing as well. The judge said he may require she be present for the following one

Kaloidis sure was low-key and off his high horse talking to the media not doing his usual claims of KS being innocent and victim blaming.
Must be that evidence that he's getting to see and I gather it's ugly.

I might be satisfied if this evil woman receives exactly the same punishment that she gave her poor stepson. That is 21 years in jail, at least, or definitely no thought of parole before then. Locked in an 8' by 9' cell. No toilet facilities whatsoever. Very limited food and water. No access to medical or dental treatment. Allowed out half an hour per day, max. No educational classes and interesting activities for you madam. And may you rot.
