Al Swanson, picture dated on back as March 22nd, 1954. I believe he was my grandmother's uncle. That would have made him brother to Signe Marie Swanson (1902-1991), my great grandmother. Attached is my grandmother's (Shirley Kallerman) tree, but it looks to only trace those directly contributing to my personal tree. Shirley married Irving Gilbert Rau, Jr: they had 3 daughters- Lucinda, Heather, and Jennifer. Jennifer Bresnahan is my mother. I am married and my name is Holly Sayer. I've been interested in this missing family member for the last 2 decades. We've actually had a few people go missing in our family, but Al was the one who just walked away one day for his daily walk and never returned. It is believed he had dementia. I've contacted the sheriff's office and they had no further information than what has been listed on each site. I've been searching John Does over the years for a likely match.

You should get in contact with the case manager listed on NamUs and provide them with the picture. They would probably be very happy to have one. The National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs)

Also, have any family members provided DNA to law enforcement? (in 2018 the NamUs system said he had no biometrics available to compare with unidentified remains but this part of the website can’t be seen by the public anymore).

I am attempting to do that now. I'm not sure whose DNA in my family would be viable enough to connect to a John Doe but I am pursuing it now that I have more family tree information as of recently. Thank you for your help!

They generally want people who are first-degree relatives like parents/children/siblings because those are the people who share the most DNA with the person, but if those people have since passed away (since it’s been 40 years and Albert was already rather old I’d assume this is the case) or are otherwise unavailable other relatives will suffice. To prevent a false negative in the CODIS system that the FBI uses to store DNA data, you need at least 3 reference samples from people who are related to the person.

I would also suggest taking a consumer DNA test, downloading your raw sequence data, inputting the results into GEDmatch.com, and allowing the results to be viewed by law enforcement. This will mean that he can be connected back to an unidentified human remains case that may be undergoing genetic genealogy research because the CODIS system and the public domain databases used for forensic genetic genealogy aren’t connected to each other.

Thank you! I've uploaded my DNA to GEDmatch a few years ago and made it available to law enforcement but I have not heard anything. I'll follow your advice and see if I can find anyone else in the family closer to submit theirs.
