Connecticut boy, 12, fatally stabs twin sister, hospitalizes prominent lobbyist mother

A 12-year-old Connecticut boy was charged with murder after he fatally stabbed his twin sister and injured his mother who is a prominent lobbyist, according to reports.

The boy, who has not been named, was charged Tuesday with one count of murder and one count of first-degree assault, West Hartford police said. The boy was arraigned at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, where he was treated for minor injuries following the stabbing that seriously injured his mother, Janemarie Murphy, 56, and killed his 12-year-old sister, Brigid Curtin, the Hartford Courant reported.

Police received a 911 call about 3:30 p.m. Monday from a woman who said her son stabbed her and her daughter. Officers arrived at the scene to find all three at the home.

They were rushed to the hospital where the girl later died. The state medical examiner on Wednesday ruled her death as a homicide due to the stab wounds to her neck and torso, FOX61 reported.

The motive of the fatal attack remains under investigation. Murphy’s children attended Sedgwick Middle School.

Boy fatally stabs twin sister to death & critically injures mom: He’ll face little, if any, time behind bars [Report]

January 14, 2019

"A 12-year-old Connecticut boy stands accused of stabbing his own twin sister to death last month. His mother was also injured in the alleged knife attack....

Due to Connecticut laws involving youth, the boy is expected to spend little, if any, time behind bars.

“The maximum punishment for a person 14 or younger would be a maximum of 30 months of probation supervision with or without residential placement, minus any time spent in pretrial detention,” Deputy Chief State’s Attorney Kevin Lawlor told the newspaper.

Lawlor added that only “certain serious” cases for adolescent offenders aged “15 or older can have their cases transferred to adult court.”...

The suspect is reportedly being held at a juvenile detention center. A motive in the purported slaying wasn’t revealed at the time of reporting...."

Bumping up for Brigid....

We probably won't hear anything from court as he is a juvenile - just wondering if any recent articles are out there? TIA! :)

The Hartford Courant had a "one year later" interview with the parents, I unfortunately didn't save the link but it's the first hit on Google for "hartford courant brigid curtin". Still nothing about what may have happened to the brother or any motive. Just such a strange case.

for you, @Niner (Something I can actually do!) (It's a long article that focuses on Brigid and all about her life, what she liked, what she was good at...)

After the attack, the young boy was charged with murder with special circumstances and first-degree assault, the Courant reported at the time, but the legal proceedings are closed to the public because the boy is so young.

For the past year, Brigid’s parents have remained mostly silent publicly, occasionally relaying messages through a family friend or a local priest.
....
Curtin said he sees Brigid in the rooms of Westmoor’s main building, but there are many other places that make him think of her.

“It’s driving by soccer fields, it’s driving by ice cream stores … the movie theater, walking around Blue Back or the Center,” Curtin said. “It kind of rolls with you and hits you in waves unexpectedly.”
....
Curtin and Murphy think of Brigid constantly and talk about her often. But in some ways, Curtin said, the family hasn’t been able to “mourn in a normal way,” because of how their daughter died.

“It’s been very difficult in this very unimaginable situation,” Curtin said. “What would be normal family mourning, it’s not been possible here.”
....
A year after their daughter’s death, Curtin and Murphy have begun thinking about ways they could use the memorial fund to honor their daughter’s memory.

After talking with leadership at Westmoor, they decided on funding an outdoor classroom at the park.

I would hope he's not out running around loose out there somewhere. To kill his sister and attack his mother like that he is massively disturbed and dangerous, IMO. And I don't think he'll just outgrow his problems.

Still so, so sad. And you are right, @SaguaroSpirit -- the brother will need counseling, supervision and control for many years to come. Whether he just blew up big-time one day, or this was something that had been simmering -- very likely it was both -- he is a troubled individual. What an awful thing for this family. The parents have lost both children -- each child's story brings such sorrow and misery.

I do want to keep following to see if we can find out a little more and to see what is in store for this disturbed young person.
