DANBURY, Conn. (AP) — A mother strangled her three young children to death in their Connecticut home before taking her own life, according to an initial investigation by police Thursday.

Officers found the bodies of 12-year-old Junior Panjon, 10-year-old Joselyn Panjon and 5-year-old Jonael Panjon inside their home in Danbury on Wednesday evening after responding to a call from a distraught man, city police said.

The body of the mother, 36-year-old Sonia Loja, was later discovered inside a shed behind the home.

“Pending an official autopsy, preliminary findings indicate that Ms. Loja strangled her three children before killing herself. However, this is still an active investigation,” police said in a news release.

Four people were found dead at this home in Danbury last night, including 3 children ranging from the ages of 5-12 years old. One of those people was a woman, found dead in the shed in the backyard. We’re expecting some kind of an update from police soon.@FOX61News pic.twitter.com/h0YDxqscIn

“A truly horrible event occurred in our city yesterday and we mourn the tragic loss of life. In the coming days, mental health and counseling services will be provided through collaboration with the Danbury Public Schools and the City of Danbury. Our community grieves for the innocent lives taken from us. We will get through this together,” Danbury Mayor Dean Esposito said in a statement.

Police found the four bodies Wednesday night after receiving a 911 call from someone distraught and crying, according to WTNH. Police said they believe the mother strangled her children before killing herself.

Police said the family lived in the home with two other adults. The adults were not present when police arrived on the scene, but they and other family members have been contacted and informed of the incident, police said.

“The kids were really good kids. They were really friendly kids,” neighbor Ralph Baugher told ABC News Connecticut affiliate WTNH. “When you drive by, they would wave and say, ‘How are you doing?’ Wave back to them, ‘Hi, how are you doing?’ They were always happy kids. Always playing in the yard, having fun, laughing all the time.”

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner confirmed Thursday afternoon that the three children died by strangulation while Loja died by hanging. Williams said Loja was found in a shed in the backyard. The medical examiner will also conduct toxicology testing, which usually takes a few weeks.

Loja was twice cited in June for operating an illegal day care out of the Whaley Street home, according to Maggie Adair, director of community relations for the state Office of Early Childhood. Loja was believed to have stopped operating the day care at the end of June, Adair said.

I cannot imagine the mental pain this mother must have been in to commit such an horrible act.
Or the pain the surviving family and friends must now endure.
And I cannot bring myself to contemplate for very long what these innocent children were faced with. Yet I know it is important not to turn away from those painful images. Those young victims deserve our attention, as difficult as it is to picture what they went through, from the person who was to love and protect them above all else.

Loja’s three children, Junior Panjon, 12, Joselyn Panjon, 10, and Jonael Panjon, 5, were killed by homicide by ligature strangulation. This is when someone is strangled with a rope, cord, wire or something similar.

Loja reportedly ran an unofficial day care from her home, according to WFSB. She was reportedly an experienced babysitter who many trusted with their children.

Two of the children were students of Danbury Public Schools, Superintendent Kevin Walston said in a release.

“Losing children to violence is becoming far too common in our nation and events such as these shine a light on the challenges communities face, specifically around mental health, that leave so many people vulnerable,” Walston said. “We ask that members of our community reach out to those they feel may be struggling with this event or any emotional issues more generally and direct them to resources or additional help.”

Loja, 36, and her kids lived with two other adults who were not home when police discovered the bodies, police said in a statement Thursday. Neighbors identified the other two adults as the children's father and uncle, according to CBS New York.

"Every day those kids were outside, but she was always with them," neighbor Erna Grenier told the outlet. "It's unbelievable. They were happy, those kids. If anybody was walking by, they would say hi."

"Didn't hear anything, no yelling. Never heard yelling or anything over there," Grenier continued. "It's sad. Why do people have to involve kids?"

Mine too. I can hardly bear to imagine the fear and pain the children experienced. It can take up to five minutes to strangle someone… this is truly horrific!
