Danueal Drayton, 27, of New Haven, was arrested Tuesday in California, where police say he sexually assaulted and attempted to strangle a woman in her North Hollywood home.

Drayton's arrest came one week after New York nurse Samantha Stewart, 29, was found dead in her Queens home, where police say Drayton raped and strangled her, WABC reported. Investigators believe Drayton met Stewart on Tinder.

"This individual is known by us and it is believed by us that this individual uses dating websites to meet women and then victimize these women," he added.
It wasn't immediately clear what dating websites or applications Drayton used in his alleged crime spree, or if he used one to meet his alleged victim in California. Shea said the suspect had used "multiple websites."

Investigators in New York have asked any other possible victims to come forward and share information.

He allegedly used Tinder to target and kill a N.Y. nurse. Police say they found him in L.A. attacking another woman.

“I believe that there will be more victims,” Shea told the paper.

Law enforcement sources told the Daily News that Drayton has cooperated in interviews with investigators.

“My body did this, not my mind,” Drayton allegedly told police, according to the paper. “I didn’t want to do this. My body made me do this.”

Drayton had been behind bars since June 30, when his girlfriend told police he’d choked her inside her parked car on Long Island. After his arrest, he’d been ordered held on a $1,000 bond. At the time, Drayton was on probation in his home state of Connecticut. Authorities there were reportedly trying to locate him because he had missed three mandatory visits with New Haven probation officials.

...

According to the New York Daily News, Drayton has since confessed to murdering as many as seven people total, in California, Connecticut and New York. Authorities said they are trying to verify those claims.

Connecticut Officials: Drayton Was In Database That Should Have Alerted New York He Was On Probation At Time Of Arrest

Drayton, who has been arrested or is a suspect in at least five cases of violence against women since 2011, was placed on probation in March after a harassment arrest, Connecticut officials said Tuesday. But when Drayton appeared in two New York courtrooms in early July following his arrest on charges he strangled his ex-girlfriend, prosecutors in Nassau County told the judges Drayton had no prior involvement with law enforcement, according to the Legal Aid attorneys who represented Drayton.

Unaware that Drayton was on probation in another state, a New York judge set him free without bail on July 5.

...

“Neither side offered information to the court indicating the defendant had an out-of-state criminal record and, at that time, the defendant had not been indicted by the district attorney’s office,” Nassau County Court spokesman Daniel Bagnuola said Tuesday. “Prior charges in Connecticut were not included in [information provided to the judge]. It would have been impossible for the judge at that time to foresee the allegations that are presently unfolding and coming to light with regard to this defendant.”

...

Connecticut officials said they weren’t notified that Drayton had been arrested in New York or that he had flown to Los Angeles, also a violation of his probation.

“If (Drayton) had been arrested in Connecticut his probation officer would have gotten an automatic alert about it,” Judicial Department spokeswoman Melissa Farley said Tuesday.

She said that alert is not available for out-of-state arrest notifications. She also said that probation officers occasionally do check national law enforcement databases to see if anyone on probation has been arrested elsewhere but “with more than 40,000 clients” that is difficult to track.

I'm surprised this story doesn't yet have more traction here on WS, but everything that's happened is just started to be revealed.

'He Was A Cool Guy,' Says Woman Who May Have Narrowly Escaped Alleged Tinder Serial Killer

Zynea Barney remembers her first date with suspected serial killer Danuel Drayton, who was arrested for the murder of Samantha Stewart on July 26.

The two dated for six months, with Barney noting Drayton's jealousy and deception throughout the tryst.

“Each week, I would distance myself more and more,” she said. “That’s when I started to see the possessiveness and aggression. He would pop up at my house, knocking on my door. One day, I didn’t answer my phone and he sat outside my window and watched me and called my name.

Drayton informed Barney that he'd be moving to California from Long Island, New York. After pressuring her to continue hanging out, Barney asked Drayton to exit her car.

"I put my car in drive, my seatbelt was still on, doors were still locked,” she said, recalling the June 13 altercation. “Then I told him to go. He looked at me and said, ‘So we’re really not going to get back together? You don’t ever see a future.'"

That's when he began strangling her.

...

“The next day, he kept calling me. He kept popping up to my house, telling me he was going to kill my son,” she said, noting that he threatened to set her car on fire. That day, he slashed her tires.

Man Says 'Voices' Made Him Kill NY Date, Admits LA Attack

In an interview published Tuesday, Drayton says he remembers strangling Queens nurse Samantha Stewart two weeks ago and talked about voices urging him to harm people.

“I really liked her. I didn’t want to kill her,” he said from behind a glass partition. “They told me she had to die.”

Mental Evaluation Ordered for Suspected Dating App Predator

A mental competency evaluation was ordered Thursday for a man who is suspected of killing a nurse and raping another woman in New York and is charged in Los Angeles County with sexually assaulting and trying to kill a woman in North Hollywood after they went on a date.

Criminal proceedings against Danueal Drayton were suspended after a defense attorney declared a doubt about the defendant's mental competence, according to Paul Eakins of the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.

Brutal. This is a pretty long read. Goes into some depth about his mental health history, too.

Danueal Drayton Had History Of Violence, Mental-Health Issues; Blew Off Probation Appointments

As his girlfriend lay curled up in a ball on the bedroom floor of their East Haven apartment on Thanksgiving Day in 2011, Danueal Drayton pummeled her with punches before choking her until she blacked out, court records show.

“Swing after swing after swing to the point my body went into shock and I urinated all over the carpet floor as I laid helplessly,” the victim said in her statement to East Haven police following the Nov. 24, 2011 attack.

The victim told police she tried to reach for her phone and that’s when Drayton started choking her. “He grabbed me from behind and started strangling me with his arms, and within seconds I passed out or thought I had died,” she said.

That attack was the first time Drayton, who was 21 at the time, was arrested. There would be four more arrests in Connecticut over the next seven years many of them following violent attacks on woman, court records show.

A review of more than 150-pages of court records and police reports shows Drayton, suspected of killing a Queens nurse, has a long history of violence against women in Connecticut.

He Got Out of Jail Because of Missing Paperwork. Then, Police Say, He Raped and Killed.
It was a simple clerical error, a missing bit of paperwork.

But it had tragic consequences.

Danueal Drayton was arrested earlier this year on charges that he choked an ex-girlfriend in Nassau County. By that time, he had a left a trail of similar crimes in his home state of Connecticut.

Yet when Mr. Drayton came before a county judge for a bail hearing, no one there was aware that he had a history of violence against women — not the local prosecutor, not the public defender, not the court clerks. His out-of-state criminal history was missing from his court file, even though the Nassau County police insist they hand-delivered a copy to the court.

I hope this isn't a silly question, but does the judge's statement "Defendant must regain competency" infer that this is something achievable- like if he started on medication again? Or is it standard legal language?
