The death of an elderly woman found unresponsive at the bottom of a staircase on Wednesday has been ruled a homicide, police said Thursday. Police identified the woman as Isabella Mehner.

Officers responded to a Cove Road home for a report of a woman who appeared to have fallen down stairs and was unresponsive. The officers found Mehner dead at the bottom of a staircase leading to the basement of her home.

The medical examiner laater determined that the injuries Mehner sustained were not consistent with such a fall. The death was ruled a homicide and police are now investigating it as such.

“The victim lived alone at her single-family residence,” police said.

South End homeless man Robert Simmons, 51, is a person of interest in the home invasion and murder of 93-year-old Isabella Mehner in her Cove Road home in late September.

Simmons was charged with murder, felony murder and mome invasion. He is being held on a $2,000,000 bond.

Police say Simmons got into Mehner’s home in the afternoon of Sept. 25.

Police also noted that there some personal items of Mehner’s that went missing from the home located on the corner of Cove Road and Willowbrook Avenue.

Police say they found video of Simmons in the area on the day Mehner was killed and used DNA analysis to match a spot of blood found on his pants to Mehner.

In announcing the arrest, police said “the Department Bureau of Criminal Investigations worked tirelessly on this case. Sgt. Christopher DiCarlo, Officer Michael Longo, Angel Gonzalez and Christopher Friel were the lead investigators on this case. Through old-fashioned police work combined with some 21st-century investigative techniques and the assistance of the State of Connecticut Crime Lab, we were able to identify Robert Simmons as a suspect in this case and collect numerous pieces of evidence linking him to the crime. This was not a random act of violence. The suspect was familiar with the victim and her home from some previous ‘odd jobs’ for which he had been hired.

“The Stamford Police Department is very proud of the efforts of all our officers that put countless hours into this case. We truly appreciated all the assistance we received from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, the State of Connecticut Crime Lab and the Connecticut State Attorney’s Office. It is our hope that this arrest can bring some peace to the family and friends of Isabella Mehner.”
