HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — Horry County police have charged a 53-year-old woman with murder after officers conducting a welfare check found the person dead and another person at the scene and “covered in blood.”

The discovery came after officers were called to Dinger Court in the Burgess Community on Friday, and someone who didn’t live at the home and was covered in blood answered the door, police said Saturday in a Facebook post. Officers found the victim’s body in a closet, along with evidence of a shooting.

DEATH INVESTIGATION - ONE CHARGED WITH MURDER
🚨

Horry County Police Department has charged one individual with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime after a welfare check for one person led to the discovery of that person deceased and the suspect still at the location.
On Friday, May 16, 2025, officers responded to a location on Dinger Court in the Burgess area of Horry County for a welfare check.

The door was answered by an individual covered in blood, who no longer lives at the location.
Information was shared that called for a protective sweep of the property. The sweep led to the discovery of a deceased individual in a closet and evidence of a shooting.

The suspect—identified as Joyanna Vansant, 53—was immediately taken into custody and transported to J Reuben Long Detention Center.

There was and remains no risk to the community at large.

The investigation remains active and ongoing. Additional information will be provided when possible.

On Google maps, Dinger Court looks like townhomes.

Creepy mugshot
Yeah, that kind of lighting is more often seen in horror movies.

I'm surprised they haven't retaken it or changed where they take pictures. The dual side lighting throws shadow on the central part of the face, the features, where surely it's most important that there is clarity. The whole point of taking a picture at booking is for identification.
