Sycamore man charged with murder in parents’ killings: Sheriff

Update: A 35-year-old Sycamore man has been charged with murder in connection to the violent deaths of his parents, authorities announced Tuesday. This is a developing story.

The married couple, Gary A. Schmidt, 60, and Holly S. Schmidt, 59, were found dead inside their home in unincorporated Sycamore on Tuesday morning, prompting school lockdowns and a multi-county search for the person responsible, according to the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.
Kevin Schmidt, 35, who also lived in the home, has been charged with four counts of first-degree murder. He’s expected to appear before a judge Wednesday for a preliminary hearing.

The sheriff’s office says during their initial investigation, they noticed a vehicle was missing from the property. A license plate reader picked up the vehicle in the Rockford area and the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office pulled it over, according to authorities. The driver was later detained as part of the investigation. It’s unclear whether Schmidt was the driver.

The DeKalb County sheriff later confirmed that the driver was the victims' son, 35-year-old Kevin A. Schmidt, who lived with his parents.
