The National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs) Anjiras's Namus exclusions list 23 UIDs she's been ruled out as being, but none of them are in Florida.

That's a good possibility too. And people who run away from New England have a tendency to go to Florida, where it's warm.

Circumstances of Disappearance
Maria Florence Anjiras, known as Mia, was last seen on February 12, 1976 leaving her home on a blue English race bike. The bike was later found approximately one mile from Maria's house in front of the home of her best friend.

Maria was scheduled to take a vocal lesson in the afternoon and babysit for a neighbor early in the evening. Her father was supposed to drive her to both events. Maria did not return home for a ride to either of her scheduled appointments and her father reported her missing at 5:45 p.m.

Maria took multiple sweaters, a pair of jeans, pajamas and some money before she left the house on the day she disappeared. Maria's relatives later told police that Maria had threatened to run away two weeks prior to her disappearance, but they talked her out of it.

There were several reported sightings of Maria over the next few weeks around Norwalk, especially at the Duchess Restaurant and at the Safari Club. Further investigation indicated that Maria may have been in the Bethel, Connecticut area on Greenwood Avenue at the Charter Oak Motorcycle Clubhouse with a member named Pepe in August of 1976. In 2015, investigation into Maria being the young female observed at the Charter Oaks Motorcycle Club was found to be a different 17-year- old female from Danbury, Connecticut that went on to marry Pepe and live in South Carolina. This female was interviewed and it appears that the Bethel information is not viable.

Maria was initially considered a runaway but her status has since been updated to missing endangered opening her case up to the possibility of abduction or murder.

Maria was a Norwalk High School freshman at the time of her disappearance.

Maria Florence Anjiras – The Charley Project

It's very interesting the several sightings after Maria's disappearance, because the witnesses were people who knew her, so I find them reliable (more than in other cases). However, the sightings occurred since 1976 to 1993 (the woman in Bristol), so it's difficult to establish a possible date of death, in case she met foul play or had an accident after that.
The sightings have a weak spot: the girl who was seen accompanied by Charter Oak members was not Maria, so... what if these witnesses saw this girl instead of Maria?
IMO, the most significant witness is the classmate who said she met Maria at a Westport Avenue bar after her disappearance; she spoke with her and said she should come back home, and Maria responded "I know". This girl also said Maria was in the company of bikers, so maybe the Charter Oaks had nothing to do with it, but there are other motorbike clubs.

I have the impression that this girl initially left of her own free will but after a while... perhaps the conditions changed but when her friend saw her and said you should go home and she said I know... it only confirms that she wanted to live a nomadic life with motorcyclists... surely someone saw her with different eyes and from there the story changed... it is similar to the case of Amy Billig... it had many twists and turns but in the end the truth was never known...

In reading the circumstances of this case, a thought occurred to me. February 12, 1976 fell on a Thursday. Did Maria attend school that day? It says that her father last saw her leaving their home at 2:15pm, I know every school is different, but 2:15 seems slightly early to already be home from school. Did school let out early that day? Or was there a teacher's meeting or something and classes were cancelled altogether that day? Or did Maria cut school completely that day?

It's obvious that, at least voluntarily, Maria left voluntarily. Were there problems at home that made her run away? I know it says that her father was very protective of her, but could there have been other family disagreements that made her want to leave? She had apparently threatened to run away a few weeks before she vanished, so she'd at least been contemplating it for a little while.

Also, were they ever able to positively identify and question the girl named Donna that Maria was said to have fought with on August 27?

Norwalk High School, where Maria went, currently ends the day at 2:15 pm. Maybe she lived really close to school and walked home super fast? Or had a free period at the end of the day, so she was able to leave a little early?

Schools in this area have to stagger their starting and dismissal times because they usually share school buses among several schools (high school, middle, elementary, etc.). They also tend to get out pretty early to make sure there's time for sports practice before it gets too dark outside.

Norwalk - I just read a case here on WS about a dead newborn in 1974, found in a red/white suitcase by a young boy.
My thoughts are: What, if the young grandma of the dead girl disposed of the murdered baby and 2 years later the 14yo mother of the dead girl (Maria) ran away, for reasons, one can imagine.

A bad relationship between Maria and her "protective" father (teacher/principal) would make sense possibly in various ways.
