Carla Garcia, the mother of 12-year-old Jacqueline "Mimi" Torres, was arrested Sunday night and now faces charges of murder with special circumstances, among others. Her sister, Jacqueline Garcia, was arrested as well. She faces charges of cruelty to persons under 19 years of age.

Police also issued an arrest warrant for Carla Garcia's boyfriend, charging him with murder with special circumstances and tampering with evidence. He has not yet been arrested.
Carla is being held on a $5 million bond. Jacqueline is being held on a $1 million bond.

According to police, Mimi's death occurred in Fall 2024 while the family was still living in Farmington. Melanson said that the investigation showed the child was subjected to prolonged physical abuse prior to her death and that her body was kept in the basement of the family's home, then was moved when the family relocated to New Britain.
Officers were alerted to the remains on October 8th, when they received an anonymous tip about suspicious activity at the address. The remains were found in a storage container and were in an advanced state of decomposition, according to New Britain police.

Police said Nanita disposed of the girl’s remains at an abandoned property on Clark Street last Wednesday. A witness called police to report the suspicious activity. Police said the child’s remains were found in an advanced state of decomposition.

The medical examiner’s office is working to identify the exact cause of death, officials said.
Police said Nanita also is charged with conspiracy to commit murder with special circumstances, risk of injury to a child, first-degree unlawful restraint, intentional cruelty to a child, improper disposal of a body and tampering with physical evidence.

If her death happened in Fall of last year did no one notice her absence? Was she not in school? I guess her 'mother' could have told the school that they were moving out of the area. Thank goodness for the witness reporting what they saw to LE!! Jacqueline /Mimi could have very well ended up as one more of the unidentified.

Edit - to correct name.

Torres said that he had not seen or spoken to his daughter since before her 12th birthday, which was Jan. 29.

He said the 12-year-old was living with her mother, who had custody. He believes that she has been missing since January or potentially earlier. He said he hadn’t been able to get in touch with her for months.

The family had been living in Farmington, according to police, and they believe that Jacqueline was the victim of prolonged abuse and malnourishment. They believe that her body had been kept in the basement of the family's home, then moved in 2025 when the family moved to another location.

The last known schooling Jacqueline Torres had was homeschooling, New Britain Mayor Erin Stewart said.

Osorio said he hasn’t physically seen his granddaughter in two years and that the mother would always make excuses to his son - the father - about why his granddaughter couldn't FaceTime him.

“He was thinking all the time that Mimi just don’t want to see, and he don’t want to like push her,” he said.

“Only God is helping me. God is helping me to pass this process,” Patricia Delgado, the girl’s grandmother said in Spanish.

Everything about this story is awful and it echoes other threads. Keeping her body in the basement? So grateful to the person who reported the suspicious activity, I hope Jacqueline's body can tell the story, dreadful as it must be.

What horrible humans beings who did this to her.

Love says her friend knew the 11-year-old’s mother’s boyfriend Jonaton Nanita. She says he started to leave breadcrumbs in their conversations about killing someone, and where the body was.
"He kind of just told the wrong person where she was,” said Love. “We came and investigated it. And it was a body. He told on himself really.”
Love says Nanita told her friend the person who was killed was a “bad man” and that they “deserved it.” She says they launched a self-investigation to find the body, but were shocked when it turned out to be Mimi’s.

"I was disgusted,” said Love. “I had a feeling anyway it was a human. She told me he said it was a bad man. I was disgusted and devastated when I found out it was a little girl.”
She says their discovery led New Britain police to this house on Clark Street, where they recovered the storage bin, and the autopsy confirmed the body’s identity to belong to "Mimi."
Since the discovery, police have arrested Nanita, the girl's mother, Karla Garcia, and her aunt, Jackelyn Garcia.

New Britain school officials said the mother charged in 12-year-old Jacqueline Torres-Garcia‘s death pulled her daughter out of school last year.
