Middletown police say they are searching for 59-year-old Peter Recchia. Recchia was last seen Sunday afternoon in the area of Miller’s Pond State Park in Haddam.

Wednesday morning, State Police and Middletown Police were at the pond with canines searching in the woods. They have since cleared the scene.

Police were also asking if residents had any security camera footage. Detective Sergeant Will Porter of the Middletown Police Department said, “If you have cameras looking out at shops or Ring doorbell systems and it happens to be along the Foot Hills area, Durham, 147 in Middlefield or Route 17 in Middletown into Durham we are interested in any camera footage you may have.”

Officials said a cell phone signal pinged him near the area of Middlefield which is why they are conducting a search there.

Last seen near the area of Millers Pond State Park by eyewitness on Saturday around 4:30pm.

According to family members who spoke to police he is known to take long walks, and usually returns by nightfall but his daughter said he didn’t which started the missing person’s report.

Anyone with information to contact police immediately.

Middletown police issued a Silver Alert for Peter Recchia Oct. 7 after receiving a missing persons report from his family on Oct. 3.

A Hamden woman called police on Oct. 3 after Recchia entered her home through an unlocked door in the early morning hours of Oct. 3.

At the time the woman didn't know he was missing but she later realized he was wearing the same clothes listed in the Silver Alert. It was obvious that something wasn't right with Recchia but the Hamden officers that responded to her home didn't take him into custody. "They knew he had some, you know, that he wasn't well, so to help him they should have taken him in that night, it just made us so upset they didn't do that," she said.

Hamden Police Chief John Cappiello conformed that his department was now conducting an internal affairs investigation into the incident.

That’s an interesting update. IMO, I agree with the lady...they should have at least carried him to his house or contacted next to kin.

Family and friends continue search for Peter Recchia
The last known surveillance footage of Peter Recchia was the sidewalk in front of exon mobile on State St, taken from the cameras at this gas station. They’re hoping other places nearby can check their surveillance footage to see if they have any signs of Peter on it.

That search does not end here, volunteers expect to be back out canvassing the area over the next couple of days. They’re asking for any help they can get to bring Peter home safely.

Psychic to help search for missing Middletown man

A New York psychic, Juanita Szfranski plans to try to help investigators locate Middletown resident Peter Recchia, or his remains.
“Since my arrival, I have been examining areas of interest in the disappearance of Peter Recchia, said Szfranski, through the family’s press release. “Initially, I informed Peter’s family that I thought dealing with the media would distract me from my goal of locating Peter or his remains.”

Hamden officer put on 20-day suspension for ‘inadequately investigating’ case of missing Middletown man Peter Recchia

Is this one of the officers that responded when he was found in someone else’s home or is this a totally different incident?

On Wednesday, Hamden Mayor Curt Balzano Leng told News 8 Officer Stephen Phipps was given a 20-day suspension for inadequately investigating an incident involving Peter Recchia, who has been missing for five months.

In a statement sent to News 8 by Recchia’s family, they said he was spotted on State Street in Hamden during the early morning hours of Thursday, Oct. 3, 2019 — hour before a missing person’s report was filed. They claim Recchia — who has medical and mental health challenges — was clearly in need of medical attention after walking from Middletown to Hamden over a 15-hour period.

Family holds out hope as clues to missing Middletown man’s disappearance dry up

As media attention wanes and tips diminish in the search for a missing 59-year-old city man, family members are bracing themselves for the possibility he may never be found.

Police have checked Recchia’s phone records but that search was unsuccessful, and canvassed businesses in both Middletown and New Haven along his possible route toward Durham, where he grew up. Rodriguez said authorities examined his EBT card for purchases, but no charges have been made.

Recchia has been without his medication since then.

Police told Rodriguez that her father indicated he was “trying to save souls” at Hamden house he entered into. He enjoyed traveling around Middletown on foot, talking to people about the Bible. He is a spiritual man, just like his daughter, he reportedly said.

Clues have dried up, and, the investigation continues, until more information comes in, Middletown police Lt. Heather Desmond said.

Private detective Mark Schachter of Investigative Consultants in East Haven has been helping the family and is still actively searching for Recchia in the tri-state area. The family even brought in a psychic from New York, but she was unsuccessful, Rodriguez said.

There is a $1,000 reward for anyone with information that may lead to his discovery. People can message Rodriguez through the “Help Us Find Bunny Rodriguez’s Dad, Peter Recchia ‘Pop-Pop’ ” Facebook page or call Middletown police at 860-638-4000.

News 12's Frank Recchia and his family continue the search for his missing brother

Feb 22 2020
Peter Recchia, who suffers from mental health complications, was last seen on Oct. 3. Video surveillance captured him walking on State Street in New Haven, a day after he went missing.

Since then, there have been many false alarm sightings, but nothing that has panned out yet.

Bunny Rodriguez, Peter Recchia’s daughter, says she’s focused on finding the positives.

Rodriguez also says, whatever the outcome, she just wants her father home.

"In my heart I truly believe that he's with Jesus and that he is in nature somewhere,” she says. “I'm just hoping to have him be returned home."
