FL - Nubia Barahona, 10, slain, twin injured, West Palm Beach, 11 Feb 2011 *Arrest*

  • #881
Per my notes:
Carmen V. Barahona (60/now 74) (adopted mom) – 2/21/20: Plead guilty. 3/4/20: Sentenced to life in prison.
But I thought that was to be deferred until after his trial, provided she testifies against him, as she agreed to? Or has he gone to trial now? I thought that was still ahead.

Yes you are correct. It is still "up in the air" for her until she testifies against him - when ever THAT might be. He is under DP also - and that is why this case is taking so long for justice. Much easier if the DA had just gone for life not parole.....

Oh good - but I can not read the article - it says "Not available at my location". Maybe someone in the U.S. can see what it says (for my notes, please!) TIA!

Jorge Barahona, 58, was in a Miami-Dade courtroom on Wednesday for a hearing, where he told the judge he's not seeing eye-to-eye with his legal team, saying they want him to plead guilty.
Judge won't allow man charged in 2011 adopted twin murder-abuse case to drop lawyers

basically, his attorneys say that he must not be competent because he won't take the plea deal they are advising he take. Judge found no evidence of his current counsel being ineffective. Defendant says he wants his counsel gone and wishes to represent himself, so now the court is ordering yet ANOTHER competency test to see if Barahona is competent to represent himself in a DP case  delay delay delay rinse lather repeat.

Snip:

Jorge Barahona, 58, was in a Miami-Dade courtroom on Wednesday for a hearing, where he told the judge he's not seeing eye-to-eye with his legal team, saying they want him to plead guilty.

The judge on Wednesday found no evidence that the defense attorneys are ineffective.

Barahona also requested to represent himself, and the judge ordered him to be reevaluated by doctors to see if he can represent himself in a case where the death penalty is on the table.

Such a precious little girl who deserves justice.

Thanks @tlcya & @PayrollNerd - for that info. Yep - delay, delay,,,,,

I do have a status hearing for him on 10/31/25.

Maybe an earlier one now that the Judge wants another competency hearing? @PayrollNerd - I can not access Miami-Dade - maybe you can find a hearing before the one mentioned above? TIA!

Seriously?! STOP THE MADNESS!

and Jorge STALLS AND MANIPULATES THE JUSTICE SYSTEM AGAIN.

How long has this gone on? Take the DP off the table, and just cut him a deal for 30 years.
