For lack of any new information, I put together a quick list of the states where we know Carmichael lived, visited, or committed crimes—places where he could have potentially met our UID. I'll go back and add dates when I have more time:

Atlanta, GA (born here, but no evidence that he lived here as a teen or adult)

South Boston, MA (gave address there when arrested and his family still lives there)

Lewiston, ME (said to have "formerly" had a local address there)

Monona, WI (robbed store there with Labbe; GC's sister was with them but not charged; GC had an address there)

Reno, NV (committed robbery there)

Trenton, NJ (committed robbery there)

Hartford, CT (committed robbery there)

Portsmouth, NH (committed robbery there)

Ledyard, CT (lived there briefly with Defreitas, Rainello, and UID in late 1970 shortly before murder)

What else am I missing?

I may be missing something as I have only read through the thread once. I am sorry if I have the dates all wrong.
Is it possible that Iionka could have encountered the guys in Nevada? She would have been about 19 at the time. Just a simple encounter while on vacation, meets these bad boys and is excited about there activity. She then goes back home and settles down into life but become restless and leaves home to reconnect with them with the promise of something more? Maybe these guys made her feel important, feel something good?
Is there anything that speaks of her character for the years leading up to her disappearance? Maybe the husband is not too concerned right away because he is used to her restlessness?
I remember how I was at that age and there are times when I look back and wonder what possible excitement I could have been involved in if I had made different choices. And hey, how many times do we reconnect with people from our past?
Just a theory..... Maybe it's not her but someone else they had a past with and reconnected with later?

Okay, here is an updated timeline of Carmichael's whereabouts from 1964-1970. There are definitely some gaps we need to fill, but perhaps this will help us zero in on when and where he met UID:

Born in Atlanta, GA

Oct 1964: WI robbery. Listed as formerly of Boston, with local address of 207 Owen Road, Monona, WI. GC's sister was in the car when he and Amabile robbed the store. Was she visiting? Did she live/go to school there? His address is not far from the University of Wisconsin in Madison. He was 19 at the time.

Oct 1964-late 1965?? Don't know how long GC was in prison in Wisconsin, but his accomplice Amabile was out and working as a magazine salesman in southern CA by January 1966 at the latest, since this is when Amabile was involved in the hit on someone's wife.

1966-July 1968: ??? (Maybe he was in prison for part of this time? Could also be when he lived in Maine.)

July 1968 (or 1967?): GC and Brown rob a furniture store in Boston.

Oct 16, 1968: GC robs bank in Brockton, MA. When arrested, he gives his address as 506 E. 7th-St., South Boston, MA

Nov 7, 1968: Hartford/Manchester CT bank robbery (with Labbe, Lucille, etc.)

December 1968: GC and Brown apprehended in Reno, NV after escaping from jail in Plymouth, MA. Said to have committed 14 robberies that netted over a million dollars after their escape. Not sure when the escape from Plymouth occurred

1969: I think he was in prison in MA until October 1970, when he escaped en route to sentencing in CT for the Manchester robbery

Oct 5, 1970: escaped during transport from Walpole, MA to Hartford, CT. An article about their escape in the Lewiston (Maine) Times notes that they were well known to authorities in Lewiston and Auburn, used to live in the area, and had made threats to locals (supposedly Brown's wife was one of those threatened) in the past. This same article suggests that they were (incorrectly) believed to be headed down I-91 to New York after the escape. Car found abandoned in Hartford

Rest of timeline respectfully copied from Skigirl's post:

* 11/17-12/17/1970 -- UID makes phone calls from location in New Jersey, works inNew York?

* 12/22/1970 -- Carmichael & DeFreitas rob NJ bank of $60,000

* 12/28/1970 -- Carmichael shows up with UID in Ledyard

* 12/28-12/29/1970 -- Carmichael and UID stay with DeFietas and Rainello in Ledyard. UID expresses fear of getting caught/having her new identity questioned to Rainello.

* 12/30/1970 -- UID as Lorraine Stahl opens bank account

* 12/30/1970 -- UID and Carmichael (as Stahls) move into rental house in Noank.

* 12/29, 12/30, or 12/31 -- Donald Brant summoned from Rhode Island to discuss killing UID. Brandt and DeFrietas decide it's too risky to kill just the UID because of Carmichael's feelings for UID.

* 12/31/1970 -- Brandt kills UID, DeFreitas kills Carmichael

* 12/31/1970 -- James Gardner summoned to help bury Carmichael & UID

Either Jane Doe met Carmichael between October (when Carmichael escaped) and December (when she showed up with him in CT), or they knew each other somehow from before Carmichael was incarcerated.

I totally dismissed Ilonka Cann at first because it seemed obvious to me that her husband killed her, since his story about waiting until the next day to alert the police to her absence seemed suspicious to me. However, it didn't really click for me until tonight that her photo appears to be a mugshot (because her height is visible in the background), which would suggest to me that maybe there was more going on in her life than motherhood (prostitution?). Does anyone know of any other reason she might have had her picture taken in front of a height gauge? Did PA used to do that for drivers licenses, for example? Otherwise, I am liking that potential match a lot more.

Pennsylvania did not have photo driver's licenses until about 1980. When I started driving in 1979, I did not have one. I don't know of any state ID that would use a height scale. My college ID, 1980, did not and my state employee ID, 1992, did not. I've seen some welfare ID's from the 1980's that did not have it.

Since Ilonka was born in Germany, could this be a passport photo? I haven't actually seen passport photos with "height" in the background, so maybe not?

Thanks for the very useful timeline, FF. Just one correction:

* 12/22/1970 -- Carmichael & DeFreitas rob NJ bank of $60,000

That would be Carmichael and Brown. The date the UID and Carmichael are supposed to have arrived, December 28, is also the date on which DeFreitas pulled a $30k solo job and divided the proceeds with Gardner and Brant, in town from Rhode Island for that purpose or to meet the new guests, or whatever.

Brown, at some point, told a cop that they had sent most of their takings to a Boston lawyer. I'm unclear whether it was for this job or for a different one. Consider it a retainer fee. At any rate, Carmichael arrives with a briefcase with money in it, and DeFreitas makes a show, on the evening of Carmichael's arrival with the UID, of dividing up his most recent takings before the guests, saying to Brant and Gardner that that's what partners in crime do. I'm inclined to believe Rainello's testimony that the strangers arrived with Gardner, and I'd venture a guess that they were put in touch with him by this lawyer, assuming he existed, although at trial DeFreitas, Gardner and Brant were said to have kept properties in Providence for the use of other criminals, which is a strange and interesting side business, if it's true.

It seems unlikely that Brown and Carmichael would have stuck together right up until the December 22 job, though it's possible. The likelihood of them being apprehended together would have been greater than if they'd split up. Maybe Brown knew who the UID was, but he wasn't called to testify in DeFreitas and Brant's trial. You'd think that he might have been quizzed about it by police after he was recaptured, though. It's more likely they planned their last robbery together by phone, did the job, and split up again.

It's possible that they got steered to Gardner through street connections or jail connections, and that they decided to put some distance between them, with Carmichael and the girl heading out of town to the A-frame. I've mentioned it before, but one bothersome bit of Gardner's testimony is that when he went to help bury Carmichael and the UID, he was given another $15k. And as I've also mentioned before, summoning him to Ledyard to help bury them, when Brant was already there, seems odd.

Was it a 'finder's fee' kind of arrangement, whereby Gardner and DeFreitas would split the $30k that Carmichael would have gotten from halving the bank job profits with Brown? Was the whole thing premeditated? Was the business about being afraid the girl would talk, and having to kill Carmichael because he loved her just a convenient excuse to justify whacking them to Rainello? Was it something they'd contemplated in advance, and this little bit of justification was enough to push the possibility over the edge? There seems to have been a little hesitation there. They allowed Carmichael and the girl to open the bank account and acquire an apartment. At the same time, their ability to do those two things would have made it clear that nobody was looking for them in those quarters, that they were anonymous, at least for the moment.

The problem is that the actual Dirk and Lorraine Stahl lived right there in town, and if the girl was nervous, she was not unintelligent to feel so. Somebody might overhear a cashier thanking Mrs. Stahl upon receipt of a check and wonder how many Mrs. Stahls there were in Ledyard, or a bank teller addressing Mrs. Stahl, or an acquaintance might try to call Lorraine Stahl via the phone directory, only to find . . . Lorraine Stahl, and blow the whole business up--and that might put the heat on 'the Emersons.'

The prosecution built its case on the testimony of Gardner and Rainello, both of whom had good reasons to massage the facts at issue to their benefit. Rainello said that Gardner brought Carmichael and the young woman to the A-frame, though Gardner did not. Gardner claimed that the version of events he'd heard included Rainello calling Carmichael and the UID to come over on the day they were killed, and that she helped clean up the murder scene, which Rainello refuted. Both were immunized for their testimony. The defense seems not to have been terribly competent. Much of Gardner's testimony was permitted to go before the jury on technical grounds. They chose to believe the prosecution.

It's likely that the verdict they delivered yielded a modicum of justice for the deceased, but what the truth is, we are most unlikely ever to know. Brown escaped one last time from St. Albans, VT, got into a high-speed chase with shots fired, wrecked and abandoned his car, and was shot and killed (accidentally, it was ruled) by a Burlington, VT cop who was trying to get him out from underneath an above-ground pool deck. The other two escapees were captured and returned. That was in 1977. Of all the above-ground people before that moment, Brown was the likeliest to have known who she was.

This isn't a very legible news report but there's a line that appears to say, "He declined to say the old haunts of Brown and Carmichael were "centers'". (He being an FBI spokesman).

http://www.newspapers.com/newspage/32360881/

I'm inclined to believe the old haunts were centers, meaning there was a criminal organization of sorts. And within these haunts we could find the identity of this Jane Doe. Maybe she was raised in TN, NC or KY but was visiting relatives in the New England area where she happened to meet Carmichael. I have no proof, I'm just guessing.

Robichaud (along with a pal William Cresta) had ties to organized crime. William Cresta was the younger brother of Phil Cresta

No, I'm no closer to identifying our UID with these references to organized crime. I'm just providing a little food for thought for anyone who might be interested.

An organized crime connection could fit. Three calls were to a dairy in South Philadelphia. The owner was an associate of Angelo Bruno, who the head of the syndicate in Philadelphia until 1980.

I continue to look, read, and search but I can't seem to decide if it signifies a school (maybe catholic school), an honor society, or has a military connection. I did find a vintage (1930) pin on ebay for sale NJHS (Nobility, Justice, Honor, Success) obviously a creed or motto. Monogram style is not the same, and obviously the year is also different.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270482845207+#ht_500wt_1156

Also, in looking at the copies of the phone records, is/was the phone owned by "C M Fox"? And, where were these other items (briefcase, Clairol rollers, etc) found?

** If the initials on the interior are J L N... the J and the N would correspond to the N J on the monogram

I googled these words in quotes. The ones you identied above that were on a pin. On,y one thing came up besides websleuths. Check it out. This might be it. Haven't made it all the way through the thread yet.

Fred&edna identified this school further up thread but was unable to find out when it was established. According to Wikipedia, it closed in 1982. If we can determine that the school was in existence in 1917, it could be a match.

That would almost have to be at a Catholic girls school, founded at or before 1917. In Phila, that would be John W. Hallahan Catholic Girls High School.

Here's some information about Brant:

"In 1973, the Merchants Bank (ed note: Maine) was again the target of two robbers: two men wearing ski masks made off with $18,012 from the bank's Union and Fourteenth Stree Branch. One Man accused of the robbery, Donald R. Brant, was never tried for it. After his arrest in Bangor in August 1974, Brant was extradited to Rhode Island to stand trial for a double murder. He was also indicted for armed robbery in Erie, PA....He had once served time in the Georgia State Prison for bank robbery."

I like this link primarily because it puts at least someone in this crime crew farther south (closer to where the UID might've called home)... even if it was after the murders.

Here's another report of an escape (again, this is after the murders of Carmichael and girlfriend)... but it involves Defreitas and 3 others, two of which were eventually apprehended in Arkansas:

"Rhode Island escapees will be returned today PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) Preparations were being made today for the return of two Rhode Island state prison escapees from Arkansas where they have been held since their capture Friday night. Edward A. Raso, 24, and Charles C. Marchetti, 25, signed waivers Tuesday to return to Rhode Island after pleading guilty to armed robbery charges stemming from a holdup in Forrest City, Ark. A state police spokesman said Tuesday night that four Rhode Island police detectives would leave for Arkansas either today or Thursday to escort the two men back. The men were sentenced to five years in the Circuit Court of Arkansas on the armed robbery charges but Forrest City Police Chief Joe Goff said the charges in Rhode Island would take precedence. Marchetti and Raso were among four inmates, all described as extremely dangerous, who escaped Jan, 27 from the maximum security section of the Adult Correctional Institutions in Cranston. The two other escapees, Richard F. DeFreitas, 35, and Dennis Gomes, 28, remain at large. Raso and Marchetti were arrested Friday night at a roadblock after a Kentucky couple was robbed at a Holiday Inn in Forrest City. An off-duty policemen serving as a security guard noticed the men leaving and took down the license plate number of their car. Arkansas authorities began checking on the men following their arrests and learned Monday that they were wanted in Rhode Island. Marchetti and Raso earlier were identified as being involved in kidnaping incidents in Attleboro, Mass., Jan. 28 and in Nashua, N.H., Jan. 29."

According to this source, NJHS in Niagara was not built until 1922, so we can scratch that off the list:

http://www.niagara-gazette.com/norm...ions-and-two-connected-schools?mobRedir=false

You are misreading this article. There was a new BUILDING built for the high school not junior high, but the school itself had already been in existence. I THINK THIS IS A VERY VALID POSSIBILITY. When you think about the placement of the letters on the ring, their school motto really makes sense. it also leads me back to the missing Miss Sheehy as a possibility.
