I've crossed my fingers, legs, and toes... none of it's easy at my age ;)

  • #824
Wow. Where/how would they be announcing something?

Theyve since made the announcement. It wasnt related to this case.
I just went to their social media where they announced the identification of another set of remains.

I'm still keeping my fingers, toes and legs crossed in the hope that it won't be much longer before this UID has her name back.

I am on pins and needles. I really hope this one is solved soon.

In May 1974, Connecticut State Police recovered the decomposed remains of an unidentified woman from a wooded area in the town of Ledyard, Connecticut. The agency had received a tip about two murders that had occurred at a home on Shewville Road. Investigators located two shallow graves several hundred feet behind the house, in which they discovered the decomposed bodies of a man and a woman. Investigators later successfully identified the man as Gustavous Lee Carmichael, a convicted serial bank robber, who had previously escaped from federal custody. He and the woman had been known to use the aliases Dirk Stahl and Lorraine Stahl before their murders on December 31, 1970. In the subsequent years, two men, Richard DeFreitas and Donald Brant, have been convicted for the murders of the individuals.

The unidentified victim, a White woman, was estimated to be between 18 and 30 years old at the time of her death. Investigators also estimated that the woman stood 5’2” in height. However, due to the decomposition that had occurred, investigators were unable to make determinations about the woman’s eye color or hair color. Investigators believe that the woman had died in 1970 and was the victim of a homicide.

Several items of clothing and jewelry were recovered with the body, inlcuding tan leather “wet look” vest, a gold or tan sweater, a brown tweed skirt, and a pair of brown Grannie boots. The unidentified woman was also wearing two rings and a wood-carved broach or pendant. The wood-carved figure appeared to be an abstract ceremonial head. One ring appeared to be a school ring with the letters J.H.S.N. monogrammed, and the initials I.L.N. and the date 1917 engraved inside. The other ring is an inexpensive one with an animation emerald stone.

It was also established that the decedent had been known to drive around the area in a vehicle that had been found dumped in Hartford, Connecticut with a Maine inspection sticker - a green 1964 Oldsmobile with either Massachusetts or Maine license plates. Additionally, investigators were able to recover a yellow raincoat that the woman was known to have worn, as well as a Lady Clairol brand hair roller set which was known to belong to the woman.

Since the discovery of the unknown woman’s remains, law enforcement investigators have diligently pursued various leads about her identity. Investigators located a woman named Lorraine Stahl, who had moved from the area in the months prior, and determined that her identity had been assumed by the unidentified decedent. Investigators also created a composite sketch of the woman's appearance as she had been known in her life. Years later, in July 2011, the case was entered into the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs) as case number #UP8909. Despite the exhaustive efforts of law enforcement, the woman’s identity has remained a mystery. With few leads for investigators to pursue, the case went cold.

In 2022, the Connecticut Office of Chief Medical Examiner partnered with Othram to determine if advanced forensic DNA testing could help establish an identity for the woman or a close relative. A DNASolves crowdfund has been created to raise funds for the remaining casework costs. Anyone can contribute here. Anyone with information that could aid in this investigation is encouraged to contact the Connecticut Office of Chief Medical Examiner by calling 860-679-3980 and referencing agency case NL-74-238 or NamUs ID #UP8909.

The drawing of her reminds me of Jane Fonda in Klute; the haircut and the clothes she wears. The weird thing is about that haircut is that it really wasn't a 'thing' until Klute came out in 1971. Most women in the 60s and the early 70s wore their hair long and loose parted down the middle or copied Mia Farrow's short cut made famous in Rosemary's Baby. The haircut basically came into being because of that movie since Jane Fonda had long locks prior just like most other women of that era. The hairstylist who created the hairstyle worked out of St. Mark's Place in New York City.

Could the East Village be a clue as to this woman's identity? The fact that she also had some hair rollers buried with her made me wonder whether they could be a clue to her identity. Also the yellow raincoat is also similar to the coat Fonda wore in Klute. It was also filmed completely in New York City.

I found an article for Nov. 19, 1968 from The Bridgeport Post (Connecticut) that names 7 men and 1 women in indictments for 2 separate bank robberies. In a hold-up of The Hartford National Bank & Trust Co. (Manchester branch); 3 men: Gustavous Lee Carmichael, Roger Joseph Brown, Richard D. Labbe and Lucille Civitelli (or Civilelli - hard to read). It says Carmichael is of South Boston & he and Brown are also being sought as escapees from a jail in Plymouth, Mass. Miss Civitelli is being held at the State Farm for women in Niantic (?) and Labbe at the Federal Correctional Institution in Dambury.

I had not heard/seen the Lucille Civitelli name mentioned before on here...could she be our UID? She knew Carmichael & committed a bank robbery with him at the very least. This was late in 1968, so just a couple of years before they were murdered.

Here is a link to the article, FWIW, but it's an image on ancestry.com - don't know if everyone can access. If the link doesn't work, search for "Gustavous Carmichael" and then look at the search results under newspapers, the article will be on the lower right hand corner.

http://interactive.ancestry.com/6788/NEWS-CT-TH_BR_PO.6788_1968_11_19_0046/507890734?backurl=http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?gst=-6&ssrc=&backlabel=ReturnSearchResults&rc=3245,3575,3384,3600;3462,3575,3617,3600;3384,3800,3541,3825;3616,3400,3722,3425

ETA: Lucille Civitelli is listed as being 22 years old at the time.
This woman died in 1998. Newspaper might have had her age and name mispelled. I see this alot. Civitillo is her maiden name. She had five surname changes to her SSN. Her first surname changed was to Labbe in 1970, who is connected to this case. Which means she very likely is Lucille Civitelli as listed in the article.

Here are the phone bills. Have no idea how they knew it was "her" making the calls. (This thread is so long and complex, that I can't figure it out) I assume the account holder's name is on there. Don't know if there is a relation to Carmichael or what...

Don't know how the phone bills are connected to this case are anything. Was the account name one of Carmichael's alias'?

Many of us have shared info we discovered on the phone numbers while sleuthing... it's all in the thread (which I know is like reading a crazy mishmash of info). Since CM Fox was associated with the music industry (and a bowling lane)... it's possible Fox himself was making some of the calls. There were also (pro or semi-pro bowlers) mentioned... and even a school and milk delivery service IIRC.

As crazy as all the info might be on this case... it's fascinating, bewildering and sad. There are organized crime members, an attorney, some killers, robbers, and of course involvement by RI's Judge Bevilacqua, and more.

I got through page 13, but didn't read every article. I agree, a crazy mishmash. I saw your post and 100% agree with your first sentence!

@Skigirl has a couple of organized timeline-related posts... she did great work trying to make sense of soo much confusion, dates, aliases, etc. (All I did was throw out info! lol) 'Somehow this case plays like a mini mob movie in my head - full of unexplained sequences that I don't understand - but can't stop watching. :) I would love to give a name and life back to this gal... it's at least a proper ending for her story... she's worth knowing/remembering.

I come back to this case every few months and do a little digging with the few clues provided. A few weeks ago, I looked into the phone records again... and for anyone familiar with the links to Tennessee recording companies... well, it appears Charlie Fox (which I believe to be the same person as the CM Fox printed on the phone bill) owned/operated bowling lanes (White Horse Bowling) along with a nightclub/music venue called "The Frontier Room" in/around Trenton, NJ. IMO the phone calls associated with the Nashville recording companies were related to this business. It's possible CM Fox knew this UID, OR maybe he just owned a house/apt which he rented to Carmichael?

If anyone continues to have interest and would like links to the bits of info regarding Fox/The Frontier Room, etc... just let me know.

I'd love to write a book about these people but fear there is no one left who remembers them. If Othram comes through soon (and I do pray that it will be soon) maybe we can all work together combining the bits we know and create a collaboration ;) Once we know her name, I wonder if we will be able to determine now she met Carmichael?

I noticed that venue opened in 1941. Don't know if CM Fox was the original owner or whatever...

Anyway, I noticed the venue featured country singers in the 1960's. Don't know what this place was like in 1970. Don't know if they still had live music or country music by 1970

Anyway, I wouldn't be surprised if calls to Nashville were seeking country music artists for the venue.

It looks like the bowling alley/frontier room are no longer in existence. Google maps shows nothing that resembles the venue. There is a USGS for a well at the location. But going back in maps to 2008 only shows a business park. Interactive Mapper - ScienceBase-Catalog

So, Donald Larkin (1913-2003) likely never owned the bowling alley.

https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/azcentral/name/donald-larkin-obituary?id=27789747

He was the "MC", impresario of the C&W shows.

He was a C&W DJ up in Newark at WAAT until WAAT ceased C&W and changed it's call signal in 1958.
Around this time, WAAT became a mixed genre station in the Trenton area. (Where the bowling alley was located) WAAT apparently included some country.

Reading between the lines, Larkin may have had a part time gig at the Trenton station.

"Don was a friend to many of the early CW entertainers through his live concerts. Moving to PA in the 60's Don became a restaurateur while continuing to spin 45s."

But his days in C&W in the North East were numbered once the Beatles set foot in the US.

In 1972, he retired and moved to Phoenix and pursued real estate.

1963.02.16.jpg

I don't know where he lived in PA, but wonder if some of the calls could have been to Donald Larkin?

When the White Horse Bowling Academy opened in 1941, it had a 'different phone number.

Also the person on the 1970 phone bill was too young to own the bowling alley in 1941. He would have been only 7 in 1941. So, the bowling alley changed hands.

The bowling alley was in a rural setting.
This is how it looked in 1971

The bowling alley appears to have closed in the late 80s and was converted into an industrial park. Historic Aerials: Viewer

There is a picture of the old bowling alley on FB. They served Jersey Maid Ice Cream. Maybe these were some of the calls made?

I don't get the connection to our victim or Carmichael????
Looks like a typical small town bowling alley......(Kinda reminds me of a "super walmart", where everyone goes and hangs out)

OK...I'm seeing a CM Fox Jr who died in 1982 in Trenton, Mercer, New Jersey, United States. (This is the township where the bowling alley was located)

He was born in 1900.
I think this might be the guy on the phone bill due to the location. (I found another one with same name NJ, but it was in anther part of the state. Much younger guy)

All I know is his birth, death and census records records.
Census records show him residing in Trenton, Mercer going back to 1930. Don't know anything else.

There is an obituary for him, but I think I would need to pay to access it.
