Police were at the Hamden clearinghouse Thursday and were checking the Derby box — which at 6 p.m. Thursday was covered with crime scene tape and monitored by a manned police cruiser.

“We are checking any Kiducation bin,” Lynch said, adding that “potential evidence” was recovered from a State Street clearinghouse bin.

On Tuesday morning, police were at the New Haven home of the child’s father, Jose Morales, 43. They conducted a search at his First Avenue home and towed his car.

There is a stipulation that even if Morales is able to post bond, he can’t be released without a judge’s approval.

Morales identifies himself on Facebook as a day trader. Pictures of him are on Holloway’s Facebook page, pictures of Holloway are on his Facebook page. A photo of him and a young child who appears to be Vanessa is also on his Facebook page.

Lynch said the driving force of the FBI agents, state troopers, Ansonia and Derby police working the case is that they believe Vanessa “is with someone safe” and they “are going to find her.”

“We want to make it a priority that they understand — whatever circumstances that they have received Vanessa — just bring her back to us so that we know that she is safe,” Lynch said. “We are not looking to arrest anyone. We are not looking to begin criminal proceedings.”

Police say that there are several leads in the homicide investigation and that the child’s father and family are cooperating.

News 8 has also learned that police now believe the last known sighting of the missing girl was Saturday morning after speaking with an eyewitness who may have seen her with a man. This is one day later than when family members last saw her.

The family of Vanessa Morales telling News 8 they plan to hand out fliers around town on Friday. This, after tips brought police to the streets of three other towns, but so far no luck finding the one year old girl.

“The longer this goes the more concerning it gets. This is a 1-year-old child totally dependent on someone else for their well being,” Lt. Patrick Lynch.

“We’re all going through a struggle with this thought that we have a 1-year-old out there an no one knows where she is,” Josh Morales, Vanessa Morales’s Cousin.
...
Despite the arrest, police say he is cooperating fully with the investigation into his daughter’s disappearance and the death of Christine Holloway. Police do not consider him a suspect.

Well, Dad's in jail, and before that, he didn't have the child. Who would have her and why? Lots of responsibility taking care of a child that young. Don't they know they're going to jail?

Police were just searching these two bins by Derby Avenue in Derby for evidence related to Vanessa Morales. They just left for the night.

Any local able to help me with the location on this? I used to live off of Derby Ave, and I think this is the section closer to Ansonia that is no longer Route 34. It's been almost ten years since I lived down that way though. Trying to figure out exactly how far from Myrtle this is.

THANK YOU THAT'S WHY IT LOOKED SO FAMILIAR TO ME! It's the parking lot of Saint Michael's, which is pretty much where Derby Avenue turns from Route 34 to not Route 34 (near the old Tailgator's for anyone else familiar with the area who needs a landmark).

The church is 75 Derby Avenue, the parking lot is about 100 Derby Avenue, on the corner of Derby and Bank Street.

From CH's to those donation bins in Derby is about 6 minutes, and a route you would pretty much HAVE to take to get back to the West Haven/New Haven area.

Yes to all of this.

There are other routes if you’re familiar. If I wanted to avoid Rt 34 (and most often I do), I would take Prindle Ave to Rt 243 into New Haven. But most people, especially if they don’t live here, would travel 34.

Where the bins are located in this parking lot, they’re directly across from Catholic War Vets. I’m praying they have cameras!

Family of Amber Alert victim, police make desperate pleas for her return
Snipped
In the meantime, police said Jose Morales, the father of Vanessa Morales, was arrested for criminal possession of a firearm in New Haven on Tuesday. However, they said the charges are not related to the Amber Alert or the murder of Holloway.

Stay with Channel 3 for continuing coverage.

I’m very glad he’s locked up
IMO

Me too.

And while the charges he’s currently under are not related, I don’t believe for one hot second that the ultimate reason he’s locked up right now isn’t CH and baby V. For the judge to put a note on the case file that he must give approval for release is very telling, IMO.

Agreed, especially since the initial police presence at his home was Ansonia and related to "a homicide investigation in Ansonia."

That’s one scary looking dude, in the mugshot. He is a big guy....blunt force trauma requires some power behind it in addition to rage, especially to the extent it sounds like poor CH was brutalized. Yikes.

He looks heavier than he does in FB photo.

I would definitely take 243 to Westville, but JM apparently lived in Fair Haven Heights. I can't think of a good way to get over there that isn't 34 to Long Wharf.

The area directly in front of St. Michael's is so well-traveled, hopefully there are witnesses, although we have no idea what timeframe events happened during.

I try not to judge mugshots because I cannot imagine what is going on in people's minds at that moment, but that photo isn't doing him or his public perception any favors.

You could go Whalley to Grand. But I wouldn’t necessarily do that to avoid 34 traffic either, as that’s going to be just as bad (if not worse). I was just trying to say it’s not the *only* way to go. I agree totally that 34 is the most likely route in this case.

I should probably add to be careful when looking him up. His name is very common, to the point that there appears to be another JLM with the same birth year in court records in CT. Same middle name, different spelling.

Oh yeah, that's what's fun whenever I look at cases in CT and hypothetical routes. There is never ONE good way to get somewhere. There are so many options, especially depending on your familiarity with the area.
