Is it just me, or is it insane to just drop a child off at a random house because they have a red light outside? I love the show of solidarity and support, but that's an odd campaign. I'd love to know where it started.
When Abby and Libby were killed, there were orange lights placed on many of the homes in Delphi to both honor the girls and also remind everyone the killer was (is) still out there. I can’t remember other cases offhand but I know it’s been done. 7 months later, Delphi killer remains on the run

Yes, that's completely fine. It's the "drop her off here" aspect I find weird.

Thankfully, LE knew what was going on in this case.

Searching for this child is like looking for a needle in a haystack. I doubt fliers and lights are going to do the job. Whoever has Venessa isn't going to take her anywhere she can be seen, and they certainly aren't going to risk taking her some place where they might be arrested. I predict it's going to take an informant to find her unless there is a confession.

Do you believe she is alive?

This might sound bad to some. Apologies in advance, if so. The first thing that came to my mind when I read the article was when I was young. I overheard my neighbors talking about how some lady the street over had a red porch light she turned on when her husband was out of town and she must be a hooker. It was years later before I found out what that meant. So, from that, I would probably avoid such a house. However, red lights would probably signal enough attention for someone to want to find out what’s going on in the neighborhoods - possibly reaching new segments of city residents who haven’t heard about the case. Who knows if it turns out to be an effective tool? I like your inquisitive nature wanting to find out how the campaign began. Now I wanna know too.
A red light at her door? Not too subtle!

Yes, I agree could be risky.

Great show of solidarity in the area but most other jurisdictions go with staffed 24/7 locations like Fire House, Police Station, Hospital.

MOO and something I’ve been thinking about...

What if the red light = drop her off here was a way for someone who has her to call the police and say “I have Vanessa, she just appeared on my porch” without tying themselves or a loved one to the murder/kidnapping aspect...

Exactly. That's the purpose behind the Safe Havens Act -- provides a safe alternative to abandoning/leaving a child in an unsafe location.

Hope anybody reading/sharing the "red light message" follows the advice of the police.

“We are asking all the people who have shared the red light message to please add to their message that Vanessa should be brought to a local hospital, fire department, or police department,” Lynch said.

Huh. It's a thought, for sure.

How will people tell the red light for Venessa to be welcomed and the red lights of a Christmas decoration?

The red light campaign is thoughtful but misguided. Showing strength and solidarity with Venessa missing, getting the word out that this baby girl needs to be found is commendable, but just dropping her off at some rando house is irresponsible. You don’t know who is inside. Hell, a RSO could put up a red light, and there ya go.l

Agreed. Which is why this red light idea was started by citizens...not LE.

Misguidedly wanting to help.

If it was started by LE then that could be, but because this is a citizen-started idea, I don’t think LE had any hand in it.

It was just some random, well-meaning but not terribly smart person on FB. I'm local so it's pervasive on my feed. The version I saw first involved 'no questions asked, dont have to knock, just leave her on my porch but I have a red light so you know I'm safe'. Umm, yeah, weird and lacking common sense. It was 28 degrees the night I saw it first. There's no part of mobile toddler, alone on porch, in sub-zero weather, that's 'safe'. @@

There have been other, unreported searches in the area that I'm hearing via (reliable) rumor mill. So while we're not getting updates, that doesn't mean LE aren't working their tails off to find her.

Whatcha think? Gang related? Gangs are known for violent murders, i.e. the mother. Could they have taken Venessa as an innocent child? New Haven indicted 25 gang members this past summer. Just pulling strings to understand why someone would take a young child.

As to my "take" on leaving a child anywhere, well, if I were harboring Venessa, my first priority would be not getting caught which could very well happen when leaving her off. And, don't you think LE is watching hospitals, fire stations, etc.? Flashing lights within seconds.
