Man fatally shoots himself near White House, Secret Service says

A man standing alone amid a crowd of more than 100 people fatally shot himself along the north fence line of the White House midday Saturday, according to witnesses. (snip)

One video posted on Twitter showed hundreds sprinting away as sirens blared in the background and emergency vehicles sped toward the scene. (snip)

Metro police, which will the investigation, announced just after 2 p.m. that the man had died and that officers were working to notify his family.

The incident increased security at the White House, and reporters were temporarily sent down to the basement.

It is unclear if the incident was politically connected in nature, although CBS News security analyst Ron Hosko said that will be one thing law enforcement would look into as they investigate.

"You can get pretty darn close to the White House with a weapon," Hosko said, describing how security is tight around the White House, but people are allowed to get relatively close to the perimeter.

Shortly before noon Saturday, a man approached the north fence around the White House, removed a concealed handgun and fired several rounds, according to a Secret Service statement. None of those rounds appeared to have been aimed at the White House, the agency said.
