GREENSBORO, N.C. (WKRC) — A North Carolina father served prison time for shaking his baby, causing permanent injuries. Now, 10 years later, he's accused of murdering his other child.

Police arrested 33-year-old Sterling Cummings Monday in connection with the May 2021 death of his son, three-month-old Waylon.

He was apparently babysitting while the boy's mother went out to get groceries. When she returned, she says, the baby had not been given the bottle she prepared and he was not breathing.

A neighbor performed CPR while she called 911. Waylon was rushed to the hospital, where doctors said he was suffering from retinal hemorrhaging (bleeding in the eye's retina) and had an abnormal MRI.

Police said Cummings provided inconsistent statements about what happened, and called the scene "suspicious." The baby eventually died from his injuries. His death was ruled a homicide.

Cummings is charged with first-degree murder and felony child abuse. It's the second time he has faced a child abuse charge.

In August 2012, he was living with his girlfriend and their son, Andy, who was about three weeks old. The baby was taken to the hospital after being shaken by Cummings.

The incident caused permanent brain damage, leaving the child blind and suffering from cerebral palsy. Andy's mother was also charged, but never prosecuted.

Some men just aren't meant to be fathers

Why did it take two years to arrest this guy? According to the post below, he would have been abusing the woman who was pregnant with the child he killed - too bad she didn't leave him then

TROUBLED PAST: Sterling Cummings, 33, is charged with murdering his three-month-old son. Call logs show 911 operators dispatched crews to his home on Pepperbush Drive in Greensboro six times over the past year for domestic disputes.

In the courtroom was the couple who adopted two of Cummings’ children, one of whose life has been changed forever.

“If he didn’t get caught this time, he would do it again,” said Tracy Trepcyk, the adoptive mother of one of Cummings’ biological sons.

Tracy and Allan Trepcyk walked out of the Guilford County Courthouse Tuesday afternoon after looking 33-year-old Sterling Cummings in the eyes in court.

“It was a flood of emotions,” Tracy said. “Just seeing him there I felt like, ‘Finally, after all this time, maybe there’ll be a little bit of justice.”

This week, Greensboro police charged Cummings with the May 2021 murder of his 3-month-old son Waylon Cummings. It happened at a home on Pepperbush Drive. Neighbors there remember the police cars lining the streets two years ago.

The couple who adopted Cummings’ first son, who he was convicted of abusing, never trusted the father.

“We tried to tell everybody that he was going to do this again,” Tracy said.

Law enforcement officials in Moore County say the boy, who was three and a half weeks old at the time, was shaken and suffered permanent brain damage. He’s blind and has cerebral palsy.

“I’ll never be able to wrap my arms around it,” said Allan, Andy’s adoptive father. “I just know that he is a dangerous individual, and he needs to be put away.”

A judge sentenced Cummings to 45 days in jail. Allan and Tracy hope this time around things will be different.

“I’m just hoping that…under this circumstance that they get this right,” Tracy said.

“You will answer to a higher power when your day comes, and I hope you rot,” Tracy said.

Cummings was charged with two separate counts of assault on a female in 2022.

Did I read this correctly?

"judge sentenced Cummings to 45 days in jail.". Allan and Tracy hope this time around things will be different.".

45 days in jail for child abuse that made a child disabled for life?

Seems someone should have shaken the judge. Really hard. I hope this time he lands really, but really long stay in prison.

IMO they need to be very careful to charge him with enough so all 12 members of the jury will feel comfortable finding him guilty. We have a lot of information here revealing exactly how he is, but testimony about his previous crimes may not be allowed at the next trial. Sigh.
