The dog hit or there wouldn't even be mention of it on Unsolved Mysteries. We learned a year ago for the first time in this case that the boys were sexually assaulted, this is kind of the same thing.

The dog and the alert it made is the reason DR is a POI. It's interesting, but not complete until the testing concludes what kind of blood it is. That testing is said to take years to complete.

There are "Ground Scent Dogs" and "Air Scent Dogs" used in SAR. There are also "cadaver dogs", however these are generally specialized. Most LE dogs are "Bite Dogs", some are also "Drug Scent Dogs" or "Explosive Scent Dogs", and are of little use in SAR events.
Most LE dogs are not SAR dogs. Ground scent dogs (with Bloodhounds being the most common) vacuum up dead skin cells from the ground and compare them to the scent article the handler gave them to imprint upon. Air scent dogs work from the victims scent as it is carried on air currents. The dogs work from downwind towards the victim(s) and can be of any number of breeds if properly trained...including (oddly enough) giant schnauzers.
I have worked with all of the above over the years. In most cases, a cadaver dog does not "just show up" at a search. They usually have to be called in. I had a heck of a time finding one in my general area about two years ago for a case.
You also have to vet the dog and handler. Anyone can claim to have a "trained" dog, so the incident commander has have one of his deputies check the credentials of dogs and handlers when they are checked into a SAR event.

That is completely possible, but what type of SAR dog? If it was not a cadaver dog, it just means "hey master, I smell something here, not sure what it is...could be something important or a cat pee'd here, but I can't talk so I can't tell you, but I'll alert...can I have my treat now?"

The sealed warrants may be sealed because LE was really stretching it to have probably cause. The article linked above talks about "[FONT=Candara, Calibri, Segoe, Segoe UI, Optima, Arial, sans-serif]improvements in technology" that led to that search. It seems to me that the investigation got sort of stuck at the scene of the abduction because that was the only crime scene they had or because someone in LE confused being unmarried with being a dirtbag. And DR's home was right there. LE got sidetracked and it took some civilians to get them unstuck. But give them credit for not giving up, even if they got sidetracked.[/FONT]

Some years ago, I pulled all the stories about a local cold case from the two metro daily papers that were in print at the time of the murder. There was a lot of information there, not all of it internally consistent. LE is not always straightforward in talking to the media. At times LE has an agenda. At times, reporters make mistakes. If there had been a true cadaver dog "hit," there would have to be something to hit on, after all of those years. A body. They searched and didn't find anything. They took a bunch of odd stuff and looked for DNA or blood or hair or whatever. Then crickets. Speaks for itself. And now someone who actually matches the profile and has a history of perverted assaults is a POI. I truly feel for Rassier, who seems like he had a nice career as a musician and music teacher until DH kidnapped a boy in his driveway. [/FONT]

The statement about the blood residue on the chest came directly from DR in a TV interview, it wasn't fabricated. I'm not sure though if LE just noticed the blood drops or if a dog hit on them. I'll look for that video link, I have it saved.
I was under the impression the blood residue was just seen by LE on the chest, possibly sprayed with luminol to confirm it was blood? I don't recall DR specifically saying dogs hit on the scent. But as DR stated, it was an old trunk from an aunt, so who knows how long said stains were there.
Well, to be fair, DR is still working and still has a nice career. The school feels safe in having him there. I don't think it hurt his career as much as it damaged his "family name". Even if he is ever declared to be officially not a POI, I would bet there will still be some people who will think he somehow got away with something. Even if they clear him publicly now and apologize, that will never go away.

You know how dan told the media and Joy there is information he "can't go deeper into right now"? I really wonder what that is about because after heinrich was arrested and the car made public, DR was unable to say that was the car. If anything that would probably be the only information he would have to hold back on for some reason. If innocent, he cannot know any more than seeing what he saw out the window that night. So what is the information he couldn't go deeper into now?

If blood was found, it doesn't matter what type of dog it was found by, or even if it was found by a dog at all.

You are making the point for me. Imagine walking into a school to teach or advertising for music pupils or getting musical gigs when people in the community think he killed a little boy. When people are writing on internet crime boards they think he is a killer. Of course, LE had to look at him. But after years of scrutiny and focus, they not only found nothing forensically, they found nothing in his behavior to support their position. Where is the pattern of interest in little boys? Would he risk being recognized by the neighbor kids on his first attempt at kidnap, rape and murder? Of course, people would wonder because of the proximity to the crime scene. If he is innocent, as I believe, he is a victim, also. Now that there is a POI that adds up with the profile, with an escalating pattern of one person in the region in which there is DNA, an eyewitness, and a history of local LE suspicion, it's time to put DR to rest as it appears that school officials have.

Everyone keeps dismissing the DNA from the third search. A chest was found, there is blood on it as according to DR. We don't know everything that was found, but we also know technology needs advancement to test these items. And that is where it still stands today. Maybe too early to be having pity on this guy. We know alot of other killers were sweethearts too.
In the 1970's in the Central Coast of California, a woman and her boyfriend were savagely murdered in what appeared to be sex related assault. The woman was going through a divorce and the murder saved her physician husband an expensive settlement. Local Law Enforcement directed their investigation in that direction. I do not know if he was ever officially named a POI or if the term even existed then but it was clear, by the media coverage, that he was really the only suspect. He was never arrested or charged.
In the 1990's I moved to that town and had an injury that was treated by that Doctor. ( Who seemed perfectly competent with superior bedside manner). People referred to him as "the wife killer" and an acquaintance of mine in law enforcement told me they hadn't given up "nailing him".
In the early 2000's once DNA became a routine investigative tool, it was found that the guy who raped and murdered this woman was the same guy who had committed a string of rapes and murders throughout California. This still unsolved series of crimes is now referred to EAR/The Golden State Killer/ONS and is well documented online and has a thread on Websleuths. At the time the DNA hit occurred, there was a great deal of local coverage on the case but no mention of the prior "Prime Suspect". Law Enforcement preferred to just forget the earlier investigation ever happened. There was no apology, no no vindication, nothing.
This is probably how Sanner and the local TV stations will try to deal with this case

Why would they take an umbrella stand?
DR does mention the blood residue at about 4:38 to 4:10 and at about 3:29 he says “they took the dogs in the house”.
