By Michael Doyle | McClatchy Newspapers

WASHINGTON -- Federal prosecutors revealed Friday that they will seek life imprisonment without possibility of parole for the man accused of murdering former intern Chandra Levy.

WASHINGTON -- The case against the man accused of killing former intern Chandra Levy could now turn on a pending Supreme Court decision about police interrogations.

In a remarkable coincidence, the nation's highest court is weighing a constitutional question that bears directly on how detectives questioned accused murderer Ingmar Guandique. The court's eventual ruling could either bolster or undermine prosecutors.

The parallel issue in both cases is whether police can come back and interrogate a prisoner several years after the inmate had invoked a constitutional right to stay silent without an attorney present.

Authors discuss 'Finding Chandra'

Scott Higham and Sari Horwitz: When we embarked on the book, we were surprised by how many new facts we discovered. We learned that the suspect, Ingmar Guandique, has a tattoo on his chest of a naked woman resembling Chandra Levy, according to police. We also write about how unidentified male DNA was found on Chandra Levy's leggings in Rock Creek Park. It has not been linked to either former Congressman Gary Condit or Guandique. Our book is full of new details about the innerworkings of the investigation and its aftermath.

In court Monday, jurors filled out an 11-page questionnaire that sought to determine their exposure to pretrial publicity and whether they can sit as jurors on a case that could stretch six weeks. Their answers to the questions about their exposure to the case were not disclosed.

Defense attorneys objected that the first half of the 114-member jury pool were subjected to individual security screenings with handheld metal detectors before they entered the courtroom, arguing that the enhanced security measures implied to jurors that Guandique is a threat. Superior Court Judge Gerald Fisher agreed to stop subjecting the jurors to the enhanced screening, but rejected a request from the defense to have all 56 of those jurors dismissed from the pool.

After one day of jury selection, 33 members of 114-person pool were struck, almost all because they had travel or some other personal or professional hardship. Concerns over exposure to pretrial publicity will be dealt with on Wednesday.

The federal public defenders who represent Guandique hired a jury consultant to help them decide which jurors they should seek to keep on the case and which they should seek to strike.

Susan Levy was responsible for the intense overkill on Gary Condit. I would expect her to do the right thing and offer a publicap ology to the made for single-handedly attempting to ruin his career. But I don't think it will be forthcoming.

Gary was the only person responsible for his reputation and he ruined it by not being ethical or moral. I don't blame Mrs. Levy at all. Additionally her daughter's reputation was completely tracked through the mud and destroyed.

Very sad case. It's weird that the trial is going on and not getting THAT much attention. I remember back then it was the #1 issue on all the national news stations. Then after 9/11 it just disappeared.

I hope they are able to get a conviction on this guy...I know the evidence is mostly circumstantial but I am postive he did, personally.

As far as Chandra's mom and Gary Condit...I just feel bad for her that she can't seem to let go of needing to think he was involved. I don't think she needs to apologize to him, but I hope she can eventually accept that he had nothing to do with her murder, even if he was sleazy enough to have an affair with Chandra, knowing he had no plans to ever leave his wife.

Gary Condit couldn't have been happier that 9/11 happened because it knocked his bad publicity off the front page news! It was daily TV headlines at the time...

Testimony began this morning in a Washington DC Superior Court in the trial of Ingmar Guandique for the murder of Chandra Levy in Rock Creek Park on May 1, 2001.

"With the jury of 12 women and four men listening, in a courtroom packed to capacity, Assistant U.S. Attorney Amanda Haines wasted no time in linking defendant Ingmar Guandique to other Rock Creek Park attacks and those attacks to to the May 1, 2001, disappearance of Levy who prosecutors say ventured into the park never to be heard from again."

In her opening statement, Maria Hawilo, one of Guandique's defense attorneys, among other things gave a brief listing of the police errors that plagued the investigation into Chandra's death, among them the failure to enlist cadaver dogs in the search for Levy's body.

"One of the women attacked by Ingmar Guandique in Rock Creek Park in 2001 took the witness stand Monday afternoon to recount her harrowing encounter with the man on trial and charged with murder in the death of Chandra Levy."

Former U.S. Rep. Gary Condit's semen was found on underwear belonging to Chandra Levy, according to an FBI biologist testifying Wednesday in the trial of Ingmar Guandique, who is accused of murdering the Washington intern in 2001.
The panties were retrieved in May 2001 by investigators searching Levy's apartment in the days after her parents reported her missing. Her body was found over a year later in Washington's Rock Creek Park.
The testimony addresses the question of whether Condit, a sitting congressman from California at the time Levy vanished, was having an affair with the intern, who had just turned 24 when she disappeared.

Prosecutors in the Chandra Levy murder trial abruptly rested their case Wednesday against Ingmar Guandique, the man charged with killing the former federal intern nine years ago in Rock Creek Park, and dropped two of the charges against him.

I found the following statement about the lead detectives not being called to the stand as extremely odd. :waitasec:

Noticeably absent from the witness stand have been the three lead detectives who took over the case in 2008 and who ultimately charged Guandique. Prosecutors called none of them to testify.
Guandique's defense attorneys could complete their case as early as Monday afternoon. Prosecutors could then call rebuttal witnesses.

Bumpity Bump Bump...They are still streaming Live on link above..they are awaiting Prosecution to make a statement..
