I understand. It might not make a difference in these cases, but it could make a difference in someone's life. Not everyone is blessed with the knowledge of prose. I have often read things that have made me cry, belly laugh out loud, and really think long and hard. You just never know if you are going to make the difference in someone's life.

I should probably be in bed, but I'm trying to stretch out my birthday as long as I can. :seeya:

Happy Birthday!!! :woot: :woot: :woot:

Enjoy it.

D.C. public schools have absenteeism issues: 15,000 students missed more than 10 days of class without a valid excuse http://wj.la/1k98lJM

The Washington Post reports last year about 15,000 students missed more than 10 days of class without a valid excuse. That's nearly a third of all students in the public school system. About 9,000 of them missed more than 20 days of unexcused absences.

Unfortunately, the school attendance issues is showing why that culture continues. They aren't placing importance on education. In such a large scale, I don't know what it will take to change it. Parents have to be in the forefront of education, and if they aren't, then the kids aren't getting any encouragement at home. Vicious cycle. Some parents pay for private schooling, homeschooling, and are involved in their child's education in the public schools. Sadly, the majority do not.

I use to think school uniforms were bizarre, and setting the kids back. I no longer feel that way. If all kids are dressed the same, then within the school setting, those less fortunate won't stand out. I never cared about brand name clothing. But I see that I was not the norm. Having raised my own kids, I see how much it influences which groups you can be a part of, which will allow your kids to play sports, etc. And sadly, the adults are behind that. :(

I wish I had a magic wand. A crystal ball that was accurate. Someway
to have answers, and find solutions. On a small scale, I know a few things I've said have influenced kids, but on a larger scale, I don't see it happening. When you're brought up in an environment that thinks the govt is there to keep you alive, and you have nothing to strive for but getting free food, and free housing...then how can we affect that?? It seems we're up against a brick wall! There shouldn't have to be rules and regulations about going to school, getting the most you can out of it, and thriving to be whatever your dreams are. But sadly, we're seeing that the kids might only want to follow in their parents' footsteps. Drug dealing, prostitution, stealing, waiting for the next handout. This is so sad.

Yesterday, I tried not to focus on these issues. It's really affecting me. I hurt for these people and for their children. I don't know how deeply seated their ideations are, and if in another environment they would blossom, or fall back on their tried and true means.

I'm going back out to plant some more in the garden. I be damned if I am only going to eat whatever poisoned, GMO, food the govt is setting out for me! No, I want homegrown, tasty things that I grew with my blood, sweat, and tears! Today, a lot of tears. :( Lettuces, radishes, carrots will grow well in containers, as will tomatoes. If you only have a porch, or piece of a sidewalk, you can grow them. I'd rather grow a garden then to keep mowing this darn yard! I'm ok with the entire yard becoming a garden! A community garden! I tried that a few years ago. People wouldn't even come pick the things after I'd done all the work. But would gladly accept it if I picked it for them. :( Didn't want to pay for my eggs, because my hens give them to me for free! But head to the grocery store and pay for those. And my eggs aren't free! I have to feed my chickens!! Grain isn't cheap, and steadily going up. They do free range, and get bugs and grasses, but they still get their egg laying pellets.

I spent yesterday at a family gathering at my FIL's. He has a huge fenced-in back yard (I don't at my house), so whenever we go over there, I spend a lot of time outside letting my pup play and run free off-leash. Because I'm usually the only adult outside for extended periods, I also become keeper of the kids who, of course, want to play outside too.

It's pretty much the same at every family gathering...me, my pup, and a bunch of kids hanging out in the yard. I don't have kids of my own, but I love kids, so I don't mind. And, honestly, sometimes I prefer their company over the adults, lol.

I mention all of this because while I was watching the kids play, I thought of Relisha...and I started crying. It seems she never had a chance to be just a kid, and now she may never get that chance.

Nobody had the right to take that away from her!!!

WHERE IS RELISHA?!

Somebody knows something, and he or she needs to start talking!!! If someone is withholding information that could help find her, then shame on you...I don't know how you can live with yourself! Please, this baby has been missing for too long. We need to find her!!!

Back for a bit. The last case that bothered me this much was Willow. I got a horse named Willow after that. Today as I was tending to the animals, I found one bantam chick that the others are bullying away from the food and water, and picking at it's feathers. I just gave it a bath, and it'll live inside with me until stronger. I shall name her Relish! Not with an A though, just Relish. She's sitting on my lap, happily chirping now. Little chick will probably get more attention than Relisha ever has. But I can't change Relisha's past. I've gotta do something positive! Once she's eaten, I'll go back out to plant my veggies.

I don't want to make y'all cry this morning, but I came across this poem that I hadn't seen in a while and thought about Relisha, the indifferent parents, and the monsters of this world who prey on all the little Relishas. Pray, people, pray, and put our children FIRST!

We Pray for Children
By Ina Hughes

We pray for children
Who put chocolate fingers everywhere,
Who like to be tickled,
Who stomp in puddles and ruin their new pants,
Who sneak Popsicles before supper,
Who erase holes in math workbooks,
Who can never find their shoes.

And we pray for those
Who stare at photographers from behind barbed wire,
Who can’t bound down the street in new sneakers,
Who never “counted potatoes,”
Who are born in places we wouldn’t be caught dead in,
Who never go to the circus,
Who live in an X-rated world.

We pray for children
Who bring us sticky kisses and fistfuls of dandelions,
Who sleep with the cat and bury goldfish,
Who hug us in a hurry and forget their lunch money,
Who squeeze toothpaste all over the sink,
Who slurp their soup.

And we pray for those
Who never get dessert,
Who have no safe blanket to drag behind them,
Who can’t find any bread to steal,
Who don’t have any rooms to clean up,
Whose pictures aren’t on anybody’s dresser,
Whose monsters are real.

We pray for children
Who spend all their allowance before Tuesday,
Who throw tantrums in the grocery store and pick at their food,
Who like ghost stories,
Who shove dirty clothes under the bed,
Who get visits from the tooth fairy,
Who don’t like to be kissed in front of the car pool,
Who squirm in church and scream on the phone,
Whose tears we sometimes laugh at and whose smiles can make us cry.

And we pray for those
Whose nightmares come in the daytime,
Who will eat anything,
Who have never seen a dentist,
Who are never spoiled by anyone,
Who go to bed hungry and cry themselves to sleep,
Who live and move, but have no being.

We pray for children
Who want to be carried
And for those who must,
For those we never give up on
And for those who never get a second chance,
For those we smother.
And for those who will grab the hand of anybody kind
enough to offer it.

We pray for the children. Amen.
