DC DC - Relisha Tenau Rudd, 8, SE DC, 26 Feb 2014 - #9

Two of D.C.'s deputy mayors defended a report that concluded the city could not have prevented the disappearance of Relisha Rudd from a homeless shelter, while withholding many details because of confidentiality concerns.

That frustrated Councilmember Jim Graham, who chairs the Human Services committee. "I cannot accept the idea" that Rudd's disappearance was not preventable, Graham said.

D.C. Councilmember Jim Graham held an oversight hearing Friday to essentially ask — Did the city really do all it could in Rudd’s case? Or is there a cover-up to protect the District against a lawsuit?

I just checked my mail, and at the very top of the stack (the first thing I saw) was a redplum coupon newspaper thingy with Relisha's photo and missing child info ( "Have you seen me?"):

have-you-seen-me-logo.png

I could tell from a far as soon as I opened my box it was Relisha. It gave me a very, very sad feeling. :(

I'm at least glad that there is a new ad out which will hopefully reach a lot of people.

I was looking online for the specific image of Relisha's redplum ad so I could post it here (no luck yet) , but I did come across a facebook link which says these specific redplum ads have helped bring home 153 missing children. (I've always wondered about the effectiveness of these ads).

Here's an article from Bloomberg:

D.C. General Homeless Shelter to Operate For at Least Another Year
By Mark Segraves
Tuesday, Oct 14, 2014 • Updated at 7:12 PM EDT

An investigation into Rudd's disappearance uncovered the shelter is no place to raise a family. Earlier this month, the city moved dozens of families out of government-subsidized hotel rooms into the aging shelter, bringing the number of families now living at the shelter close to 150.

It’s time to shut down the shelter for homeless families at D.C. General
By Petula Dvorak
October 14 at 9:54 PM

In a big institution, children in such families can get lost, the way Relisha Rudd, the 8-year-old who lived in the shelter before she disappeared this year, was lost.

But in smaller, more-intimate buildings — with units that look and feel like apartments in real neighborhoods, next to other apartments, not the city jail, the morgue and a methadone clinic — these families have a chance to thrive.

The next mayor, whoever is elected, has to do something about this situation. And with no budget for emergency hotel rooms, a projected 16 percent increase in homeless families this winter, and 40 rooms at D.C. General condemned as living spaces, there is no choice but to act.

'Night of the Girl' Event Gives Glimpse Into World Of Child Sex Trafficking

Child sex trafficking is an "epidemic" problem in D.C., but one that, for the most part, takes place away from the public view. It's only when high-profile cases emerge — like the D.C. cop who forced minors into the sex trade, or the unclear circumstances surrounding the disappearance of Relisha Rudd from a homeless shelter — that people outside of this world can see the devastating reality.

Lay down your head, Relisha, Relisha,
On pillows of dreams, on feathers of starlight,
Let me sing you to sleep, Relisha, Relisha,
Let me sing you to sleep on this cold autumn night.

Lay down your cheek, Relisha, Relisha,
On sweet clouds of fall clover, on petals of white,
Let me rock you to sleep, Relisha, Relisha,
Let me rock you to sleep as the wind blows tonight.

Lay down your head, Relisha, Relisha,
Cushioned by grass, by leaves circled tight,
Let me lull you to sleep, Relisha, Relisha,
Let me lull you to sleep in the autumn moon's light.

Lay down your cheek, Relisha, Relisha,
On sheets of grey mist, on fronds of fall ferns,
Let me sigh you to sleep, Relisha, Relisha,
Let me sigh you to sleep as the soft rain returns.

Lay down your head, Relisha, Relisha,
As clouds come to cover the harvest moon's light,
Let me sing you to sleep, Relisha, Relisha,
Let me sing you to sleep on this cold autumn night.
