Several dozen people gathered Saturday afternoon at a recreation center in Northeast Washington to remember Relisha Rudd through prayer and dance, two years after the little girl disappeared with a man who worked as a janitor at the homeless shelter where she lived.

Some of those who came to remember Relisha in a sunlit room at Deanwood Recreation Center knew her personally, including members of her family.

“That’s my little princess,” said her grandmother, Melissa Young. “That’s my best friend, my only granddaughter. You can imagine how I feel.”

Relisha’s mother, Shamika Young, said she was grateful to the community for the show of remembrance. “I still have hope and faith that she’ll return one day,” she said.

WASHINGTON (ABC7) - It has been two years since Relisha Rudd was last seen. MPD Chief Cathy Lanier says there have been no confirmed sightings of Relisha, who was 8 years old when she disappeared, since March 1, 2014.

No one has been charged in Relisha's disappearance.

Relisha Rudd vanished from a homeless shelter in D.C. Her alleged abductor, Kahlil Tatum, 51, worked as a janitor at the shelter. Tatum is believed to have shot and killed his wife before taking his own life.

Earlier searches focused on Kenilworth Park and Aquatic Gardens, where Tatum's body was found.

No. IIRC, Relisha looked after her little brothers at the shelter. She lived there with the mother and her siblings. And, again IIRC, Relisha, a child who loved to read and whose teachers instigated the initial search for her, begged to get taken out that horrible, stinking, filthy mess. The mother and grandmother had other interests that took priority. But, IIRC, the "adults" in her life got together fast enough for a meeting in a hotel when their web of lies began to be dismantled. I find it very frustrating that the mother has not been held accountable for putting her children at risk. I hope those little boys are well out of her clutches, and that CPS gives them a fighting chance at finding security and love and warmth with people who can protect and nurture them.

I was hinting at really wondering why Grandma made that statement , that she was her best friend .......I know she had brothers but as a little girl I'm mystified at why she didn't live w grandma instead of the shelter?

Well, the amount of dysfunction in the family dynamics would have prevented anyone to take actual responsibility for Relisha. She was likely kept for money and gma wouldn't take her without being the beneficiary of that money. She was allowed to hang with the janitor for some electronics or other gifts. The common thread surrounding her was maybe who could benefit from her at the moment and whose way she was in at a moment. She was taken and given away, depending on that fact, constantly. I can't even begin to talk about how wronged she was. How much she mattered versus how much worth she was treated with. She is still the one that I will never get over.

Due to the items that KT bought, I think Relisha is likely deceased (something just popped in my head, could the lye and garbage bags have originally been intended for his wife? Just a thought, probably not the case).

What happened to Relisha? Where is she? This makes me so sad.

I'm a broken record. Why no charges of neglect and hindering an investigation against the adults in Relisha's family?

Going with human trafficking theory... How would one search for her?

I don't know, but I would start with the two men who were at the hotel with Tatum and Relisha and put the squeeze on them. They weren't there for a child's swim birthday party
