Several dozen people gathered Saturday afternoon at a recreation center in Northeast Washington to remember Relisha Rudd through prayer and dance, two years after the little girl disappeared with a man who worked as a janitor at the homeless shelter where she lived.
Some of those who came to remember Relisha in a sunlit room at Deanwood Recreation Center knew her personally, including members of her family.
“That’s my little princess,” said her grandmother, Melissa Young. “That’s my best friend, my only granddaughter. You can imagine how I feel.”
Relisha’s mother, Shamika Young, said she was grateful to the community for the show of remembrance. “I still have hope and faith that she’ll return one day,” she said.

can I ask a probably dumb question ? did grandma live in the homeless shelter too?
No. IIRC, Relisha looked after her little brothers at the shelter. She lived there with the mother and her siblings. And, again IIRC, Relisha, a child who loved to read and whose teachers instigated the initial search for her, begged to get taken out that horrible, stinking, filthy mess. The mother and grandmother had other interests that took priority. But, IIRC, the "adults" in her life got together fast enough for a meeting in a hotel when their web of lies began to be dismantled. I find it very frustrating that the mother has not been held accountable for putting her children at risk. I hope those little boys are well out of her clutches, and that CPS gives them a fighting chance at finding security and love and warmth with people who can protect and nurture them.
Relisha. Just because over 2 YEARS has passed, does not mean we have forgotten about you. Give us a sign beautiful girl.
