Wow, I just heard about this case. Horrific! So glad there has been a quick arrest. I am wondering if there is a mental health issue here. There just doesn't seem to be any other motivation for the attack. There does seem to be a lot beautiful young women being attacked while out jogging. I don't know if this a real increase, or if they just seem to make the news more. Regardless, be careful. Of course in this, case, she was jogging in a well lit and busy place, probably felt perfectly safe. No way to anticipate something like this. Pure speculation, but if he had not attacked her, it would have simply been someone else.

I was wondering about a mental health issue too when I first saw the video of the suspect. So tragic on multiple levels all I can do is wring my hands. I feel so hopeless and helpless about those who desparately need mental health treatment and support to keep themselves and those around them safe.

Woman stabbed to death near Logan Circle, police say

WASHINGTON - A woman was stabbed to death in Logan Circle late Tuesday evening in what appears to be a random attack, according to authorities.

DC police said the woman was out for a jog just before 8 p.m. at 11th and O streets, Northwest when the attack happened.

Detectives said the woman, who was identified as 35-year-old Wendy Martinez of Northwest, stumbled into Asian American Chinese & American Food, a nearby carry-out restaurant, where she collapsed.

I suspect her carotid artery was severed.

Many years ago while in DC, my husband and I went to Logan Circle, walk around, sat on a bench. I had on a belt pack. An African American woman and man kept walking past us and the woman in particular kept eyeing my belt pack. I started to feel uncomfortable and told husband I was ready to go. As we were leaving I heard the woman utter, “”. At the time I didn’t think it was a very safe area and wouldn’t consider being there alone. So sorry for this beautiful life that was senselessly lost!!!

A newly-engaged woman was brutally stabbed multiple times while jogging near her Washington, D.C. home Tuesday night.
In a desperate attempt to save her own life, 35-year-old Wendy Karina Martinez stumbled into a local Chinese restaurant covered in her own blood. Once inside, Martinez collapsed prompting customers to rush to her side, Chief of Police Peter Newsham explained during a press conference Wednesday.

Yeah, it had to be something she did wrong, right? Grrrrr.
I guess horrors like this will just never end. How many lives will now be changed forever? And how many people might she have met and helped in some way? The world will never know.

Oh no, that is unforgivable. Why would they broadcast that?!?! The video I saw blurred out the horrific image of poor Wendy, but the reactions of the people closest to her tell the terrible story of her death. This whole story is beyond comprehension. It totally defeats and deflates my current hope for mankind.

Suspect charged after DC jogger killed in 'random' attack
Police announced at a press conference Thursday that 23-year-old Anthony Crawford of northwest D.C. had been arrested after investigators identified him, with help from the community, as the person in the surveillance video.

Crawford was taken into custody and questioned by homicide detectives. Court documents said he had "bandages on his fingers and on his right hand."

He was charged with first-degree murder.

Investigators said there was no evidence of robbery, so the motive in Martinez's murder is still unknown.

Crawford at one point began to speak, asking: “Aw, man. Can I say something?” — as his attorney, Eugene Ohm with the D.C. Public Defender Service, whispered in his ear to remain quiet.

In all fairness, as upsetting as that video was seeing standers-by run from poor Wendy, I cannot pass judgment on them. I have no idea how I would react in that split second under those circumstances. I recently participated in an active shooter training for my non-profit, and one of the points made was that if something feels wrong or off, get away without delay. I know that such a stance goes against our human compassion to help, but not knowing what the situation was in that moment, I am not certain what I would do. I would guess not many of us do, unless we have actually been faced with such a scenario. It’s a tough call to make, and I am not able to say I would never have reacted the same way. It’s part of what makes me feel so hopeless and helpless about this case.
