Updates. Have been following NBC stream. About 15 mins ago there was a report re four "victims" being removed. That then changed to "survivors". Now the entire report has been removed from the live stream. Very sadly, at this point I'm not sure survivors can be confirmed. Hopefully it is true and will be confirmed.

Could have been a medical event occurred with the heli pilot, or a mechanical failure, even inexperience, or as you say, freak accident.

I can see how the location in DC makes it fodder for conspiracies. But it’s a busy air corridor with both commercial and military traffic.

Yeah, that was super dubious from the beginning. Just some early miscommunication that a lot of outlets ran with.

ETA: was it the one flying dark????

I guess it's just the nature of breaking news but it's quite inaccurate that the original news headline called this a "small plane". I pictured it as meaning a small private plane like a Cessna. A jet with 60+ people is entirely different.

"14 are on our shore" ??? if they are survivors or not.

How many pilots on the Blackhawk? One?

How could this happen? The helicopter was flying towards it, did he not see to avoid?
Why is this helicopter crossing an approach to a well used runway without communicating with the tower?
Did he file a flight plan?
It's a controlled airspace...no transponder?

Is it possible he had a medical event?

Black Hawk that collided with passenger plane had 3 soldiers on board coming out of Fort Belvoir​

The US Army Black Hawk helicopter that collided with a passenger aircraft had a crew of three and was not carrying any VIPs, according to a US defense official.

Senior Army officials often use Black Hawks for travel in the Washington, DC, area.

The US Army confirmed the plane came out of Fort Belvoir, an Army post in Virginia.

“We can confirm that the aircraft involved in tonight’s incident was an Army UH-60 helicopter out of Fort Belvoir, Virginia. We are working with local officials and will provide additional information once it becomes available,” a US Army official told CNN.

not knowing the altitude, the plane looks like it’s following a clear predefined path, as is customary when preparing for landing at a major airport.

If you remember 911, the initial report was that a small plane, possibly a Cessna hit the World Trade Center.

I was thinking the same thing as you here though.

God, I can't stop thinking about all of the families and friends of the passengers that are waiting to pick them up right now. Having no idea what happened. And the people who have to tell them the horrible news...
