Missing person case resolved on same day a body is found in Smyrna

DOVER — Skeletal remains were located in Smyrna last week on the same day authorities resolved a three-year-old missing person case.

But, authorities on Tuesday would not confirm a connection.

On Friday, the Delaware Department of Justice confirmed that Cortez Hamilton, 35, of Smyrna, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder regarding the presumed death of his wife three years ago.
His wife, Keisha, has not been seen since around Jan. 9, 2015.

On Monday, DSP spokeswoman Master Cpl. Melissa Jaffe said the skeletal discovery “remains under investigation and further information will be released when it becomes available.

“The remains have not yet been identified by the Delaware Division of Forensic Science.”
Attempts to reach Hamilton case prosecutor Deputy Attorney General Stephen W. Welch for comment were unsuccessful Tuesday.
Hamilton’s defense attorney John R. Garey declined comment until after sentencing on March 28.

DOVER — A 35-year-old Smyrna man provided the location of his missing wife’s body as part of a guilty plea deal to murder last week, officials confirmed Wednesday.
After Cortez A. Hamilton gave information Friday in the supposed whereabouts of his wife’s body, Delaware State Police located human skeletal remains at Mount Friendship Road north of Brenford Road.

Delaware Department of Justice spokeswoman Nicole Magnusson said Wednesday “[t]esting by the Division of Forensic Science is ongoing to positively identify the remains.”

[h=1]Del. man admits killing wife, leads police to skeletal remains[/h]
Cortez Hamilton was indicted in 2015 for the murder of his 35-year-old wife, Keisha Hamilton, and pleaded guilty to second-degree murder on Jan. 19. As part of the plea deal, Hamilton agreed to help state police locate her body.

Forensic investigators are still working to determine the identity of the remains, which were found close to the family's home south of Smyrna, Delaware, according to the state Justice Department.
Authorities say that Hamilton killed his wife in January 2015 and then fled to Indiana with their two young children, where he was taken into custody by Indiana State Police after a nationwide Amber Alert.
In the weeks following her disappearance in 2015, hundreds of volunteers joined family members to search for the missing mother, CBS Philly reported at the time.
According to court documents, Keisha Hamilton was reported missing by her sister, Janell Foster, who told police that she had received worrisome messages from her the night before. She had also failed to show up for work that morning.
Keisha Hamilton had apparently feared for her safety, and told her sister to call police if anything happened to her.

Well, finally, he has become "sane" again, after all those years of being off his bean.
<choke>
It's time for him to pay the piper -- on to sentencing for many years. What a cruel, cruel man.

Emotional testimony precedes 25-year sentence for Smyrna man

A murder victim’s mother collapsed from her seat onto the courtroom floor sobbing and gasping loudly Wednesday morning, delaying an eventual 25-year prison sentence for her daughter’s killer.

The emotional meltdown underscored the anguish of loss expressed by the family of the late Keisha S. Hamilton during victim impact statements in Kent County Superior Court where her husband, Cortez A. Hamilton Sr., was sentenced.

“What you saw (the emotional torment) is what we will experience for the rest of our lives,” the victim’s aunt Wanda Barbour conveyed to Resident Judge William L. Witham Jr. during the last of the family statements.

On Wednesday, Cortez Hamilton was sentenced in Kent County Superior Court for murdering his wife, Keisha Hamilton. This comes after he plead guilty to second degree murder earlier this year. Part of that deal includes Cortez agreeing to give the location of Keisha's remains.

On January 19, human remains were identified as 38-year-old Keisha Hamilton. Authorities say the body was located near Mount Friendship Road, in Smyrna.
