A third person was confirmed dead on Wednesday in devastating bushfires that engulfed Australia’s southeast coast this week and a fourth was missing and feared dead, as navy ships rushed to provide supplies and assist with evacuations.

At least 15 people are now believed to have died, while scores of people remain missing after weeks of fires that have ripped through Australia’s east coast, much of which is tinder-dry after three years of drought.

Thanks for starting this thread JerseyGirl - it is just devastating. So many people still missing. I can't imagine the fear of those in the immediate vicinity of these fires. All our hearts should be with them right now. So many animals lost, so much tragedy. And as for those brave volunteer firefighters who keep going back into the flames day after day after day - I have no words.

Two people have been confirmed dead and grave fears are held for a further 28 as evacuations begin from many of Victoria's fire-ravaged areas that have been declared disaster zones.

On Friday morning the enormous naval operation began to rescue about 1000 out of the 4000 tourists and residents stranded at Mallacoota in the state's far east.

Evacuees boarded buses at a relief centre and were driven to a boat ramp at Bastion Point before being ferried out to the the waiting naval vessels – HMAS Choules and MV Sycamore – sitting about one kilometre offshore.

NSW is in a State of Emergency for 1 week

Premier declares third State of Emergency

The NSW Government has declared a third State of Emergency ahead of worsening fire conditions predicted for Saturday.

The Rural Fire Service Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons wrote to Premier Gladys Berejiklian requesting she declare a State of Emergency under Section 33 of the State of Emergency and Rescue Management Act. The declaration announced today will be in force for seven days from tomorrow.
A State of Emergency declaration enables certain powers to be exercised by the RFS Commissioner. These include the power to:

  • Direct any government agency to conduct or refrain from conducting its functions;
  • Control and coordinate the allocation of government resources;
  • Evacuate people from property within the declared area;
  • Close roads and thoroughfares to traffic;
  • Pull down or shore up infrastructure at risk of collapse;
  • Order the shutdown of essential utilities in the declared area including electricity, gas, oil, water; and
  • Enter or take possession of property in the course of the emergency response.

Oh no that’s not good. I’m sending all my thoughts and prayers to Australia. I’m so sorry for all the people and animals that have died and all the homes destroyed. It is terrifying seeing the images and videos of the fires on the news here I can’t begin to imagine what it must be like to be there in person. The very distressing photo of the koala who burned to death on the Daily Mail website absolutely broke my heart.

There does seem to be more distressing photos of wildlife this fire season, and not so much of a season as we are always on fire somewhere. I can’t bear to look at the heartbreaking wildlife pics, it seems to affect me more than humans.

Maps show size of the Australian bushfires

In New South Wales alone, more than 4 million hectares of land is on fire or has been burnt. This is more than four times the size of the fires which ripped through Brazil's Amazon rainforest last year.
It is estimated 500 million animals have died in the fires. This includes many species native to Australia such as koalas and kangaroos, and there are fears entire species have been wiped out.

Australia is just one month in to summer.

NZers wake up to the seriousness of the Aussie bushfires

“The smoke was even thicker yesterday across the South Island. There were plenty of images of very thick smoke across parts of Otago. I know I saw a couple of photos in Wanaka.”
