This sounds weird and I am not sure if it was already discussed here, but I have been reading fairly regularly and have not seen anything. Anyway, in the mid-90's, MTV ran a show called "BuzzKill" which was a Candid Camera type set-up but somewhat dangerous pranks were played on college students. The logo was a crossed out smiley face and the first episode featured a segment where two drunk students are offered a van ride that turns into a two hour journey where things get strange.

http://www-hsc.usc.edu/~vwaluch/index.html

What's interesting is that this show had one season and bombed. That one season was '96.

What's also interesting is prank where they pick up the college student and drive them around.

What's also interesting is the trademark happy face crossed out.

What's also interesting is the mysterious deaths didn't really begin until the year after this show debut. The few sporadic incidents prior, could have been isolated or just plain accidental.

'96-'97 school year, there were two cases.
'97-'98 school year, there were nine cases.

and so on.

IF you google buzzkill, one of the hits is a 'movie,' that's actually not done yet. What is interesting about that, is it's supposed to be about a serial killer.

{spooky}

Don't know IF it has any connection at all, but I'll keep it tucked away IF we need it for future reference.

Thanks for the info.

"A few men were found naked with their clothes neatly folded. "

Roxye, I never heard about that. How many and who were they?

Sure thing Arizona and RR, give me a few days to go back over my notes. It's hard for me to remember specific names, the possible related cases involved has grown in leaps and bounds over the last year or so.

the only thing I can find on the site is about Nathan Kapfer;

"his hat, wallet and police citations were all found neatly arranged near the Indian statue in Riverside Park. Kapfer was nowhere to be found."

That's one of them. There was one more if I recall correctly that had neatly arranged clothing and perhaps three who's clothes were found near the river's edge.

Still going through notes..... :waitasec:

Joshua Snell of Wisconsin

Both of his shirts were found along the bank of Chippewa River where his body was later discovered. From the sound of it, they weren't neatly folded, instead looked like they were hastily discarded.

My apologies in advance if I write on anything which has already been discussed. There is just SO much to read on the Smiley Face Killings, and I have had less time on WS lately.

First, I have seen some posts talking about GHB and whether it might be used to drug the victims, possibly administered through an eye dropper, syringe, etc. I just wanted to say that I have a little bit of knowledge about GHB due to some experiences I had with friends who tried it. Typically used in the Club or Rave scene, GHB is usually kept in regular old water bottles. The typical dose would be a capfull of diluted GHB (Of course, no way to know if it's diluted or how diluted unless you made it). I have seen people "G Out" which is like overdosing or passing out, multiple times. One of them guzzled on a bottle of this, and G'd out and was literally convulsing. My first experience with GHB was at a party where it was offered to my roomate. She was given two capful's and within half an hour, she began talking like a child, she could not hold herself up, she said she could not see anything. She basically had no control of herself, and the people who gave it to her were trying to talk her into going for a ride to a cabin in the mountains with them. The whole thing SEVERELY freaked me out.

GHB is basically colorless and odorless, and from what I've heard, has a mildly salty taste. The desired effect is like being drunk, without getting dizzy, nausea, or double-vision. I bring all this up, because I think there is a very good possibility of GHB being used in these murders. It would be relatively easy to slip into someone's drink at the bar. Or just to hand to them, and by the time they have taken one drink and realized it's not water, it's too late. I also believe GHB leaves your system quickly and would not show up on tox report.

2nd, I had discussed the Smiley-face murders with my fiance, and he feels strongly that the killer(s) is a group of very good looking women. While it might be hard to believe that women could get the upperhand with these men, most of which have athletic builds, if you add in GHB or similar, I think it's very possible. I think with good looking women, the guys guards are down, they are much easier talked into going somewhere with them, they don't feel threatened.

Just wanted to share.

I would also like to point out something about GHB that maybe not too many are aware of..........at least I wasn't.

My fiance mentioned to me the other day that he had tried it once because a friend of his was using it. His friend was into some sort of sport and it is used by many athlete's. When I googled this I found ALOT of info about how body builders, wrestlers, all sorts of athletes use this drug to aide their sleep.

Now what I am thinking is strange is that all of these young men were ATHLETES!!

I also found a "recipe" on how to make it. Very disturbing.........

So is this connection anything that has been looked into I wonder?? Maybe they were buying GHB from someone, I have heard that the victims cell phones are always missing. Could it be because they called the dealer on their phone and that would trace it back to who they were buying it from?

Just throwing it out as another possible twist. All possibilities are worth considering at this point.

Pixie:

That's a very good possibility to look at, that these students were using GHB as part of their routine. The few that are missing that weren't students could have been using it too or distributed. (a few of the non students were into construction) They did frequent the same bars. There's also a couple of bartenders that mysteriously disappeared from these same type of bars and a couple of bar owners as well. Oh, then there's a couple of college guys that also worked at private clubs in Florida.

Hmmm......there's one graduate student from Madison, Wi, that had just moved into his apartment that mysteriously disappeared (it looked like he was in the middle of something in his home). Word has it he was dealing and he owed quite a bit of $$. Wonder if he was dealing in GHB?

Interesting. Actually, I was thinking of steroids. But, GHB seems to fit in better and can have an adverse effect if taken.

Interesting............

BODY FOUND: Police recover remains from Otter Creek

MIDDLEBURY — Police have recovered the remains of an intact human male body from Otter Creek in what is likely a grim conclusion in the disappearance of a Middlebury College student.

Search-and-rescue teams from state and local police agencies pulled the body from the river at about 8:40 p.m.

Nicholas Garza, a 19-year-old freshman at Middlebury College, was last seen on campus Feb. 5. He was reported missing five days later, and Otter Creek has been the focus of several subsequent searches for clues into his disappearance.

A recovery operation was begun after Middlebury Police Chief Tom Hanley and Vermont State Police Lt. Jocelyn Stohl viewed “potential human remains” near the river’s surface at about 3:50 p.m. today during ongoing preparations for a Friday search.

The object of interest was sighted among sunken timber in a floating pile of debris below the falls in downtown Middlebury, police said. The afternoon’s operations were intended to take temperature readings and depth soundings in advance of a large-scale search of the river planned for week’s end.

Good info Pixie,

IIRC, GHB contains male hormones. I believe it's been said that if women take it alot, they can actually start growing hair where they normally don't. I don't know if that's myth or not, though.

http://www.projectghb.org/what_is_ghb.htm Much more info at this link than posted below.

Description: A clear liquid. Looks just like water. Can be mistaken for water because it is usually found in a small (30ml) clear plastic bottle, a water bottle, or even Gatorade bottles, which contains several doses. One quick taste, and you'll know it's not water. Not as common, but also found as a white powder. Infact powder use is on the rise!
Effects: Intoxication, increased energy, happiness, talking, desire to socialize, feeling affectionate and playful, mild disinhibition, sensuality, enhanced sexual experience, muscle relaxation, loss of coordination due to loss of muscle tone, possible nausea, difficulty concentrating, loss of gag reflex.
Many people have bad reactions. These can includenausea, headaches, drowsiness, dizziness, amnesia, vomiting, loss of muscle control, respiratory problems, loss of consciousness, being conscious but unable to move, and death- Especially when combined with alcohol or other drugs.
Effects of large doses: Disinhibition, sedation, desire to sleep, rambling incoherent speech, giddiness, silliness, difficulty thinking, slurred speech, passing out, and death
Effects of overdose: Sleep or deep sedation from which you cannot be awakened by any means for about three hours, and in many cases, death. Passing out while on GHB is sometimes called carpeting out, scooping out, or throwing down.

The body of Nicholas Garza was recovered in Otter Creek on May 27th. Garza is the Middlebury College student who has been missing since February. I've talked with his mother before and she fears her son may be the victim of homicide.

Thank you to all the people around the country and in Canada who have emailed me about Garza's investigation. Since this Smiley Face Killer Investigation broke in late April, thousands of you have become amateur detectives. You've spent many hours on the internet searching for clues that could help retired NYPD Detectives, Kevin Gannon and Anthony Duarte. Their investigation is ongoing and they have been in contact with Garza's family. Some of your tips have been of assistance to them.

Just got off a plane abroad to see this- while I am content for the closure finding your loved one brings, I am heartsick for Natalie, her family, V3 and Dark Shadows and all others that were personally affected by Nick's case.

We are here, and we will be with you during the quest for answers as to how Nick left us. God Bless.

It was pointed out to me by Vermont in the Nick Garza thread that the above linked article is not accurate. Post 193. No one has contacted Nick's mother regarding the smiley face cases.

SH, thanks for the links regarding GHB. Others have posted similar info. And everytime I read up on it I am more and more convinced that GHB or something similar is involved. here.

I know this is way too early to think this...yet alone to say it...but my anger is building...and I can't help but wonder if they found Nick's cell phone? I know they found his wallet. I truly don't mean to offend anyone by bringing this up...but I'm ready to jump out of my skin with all that I feel right now...for Nick...his sweet mother...his brother. Just felt I needed to get it out.

Roxye, this weekend I will go thru each and every case listed in the footprintsatttheriversedge and post the ones that have the clothing removed or left at the bank. It's interesting, important and it's something that I had never heard about so thanks for the info. No telling how important each and every little thing will be in the end. Gpod job

Young People Are Missing; Authorities Are Baffled
By JO THOMAS WITH JODI WILGOREN
Published: November 17, 2002

Joshua Guimond, 20, an honor student at St. John's University, stepped away from a card game in a campus apartment shortly after midnight last Saturday, walked down the hall, and vanished.

The campus, 75 miles northwest of Minneapolis, is so tranquil that some of the 1,850 students joke about the "pine curtain" that separates them from the outside world: 2,500 acres of woods and lakes. No one worried. It was not until Sunday night that Mr. Guimond's friends and roommate called the police.

Mr. Guimond was the fourth young person to disappear since Oct. 30 in Minnesota and Wisconsin in circumstances that family members say are similar. Law enforcement officials say they have not ruled out a connection, but have found no evidence of any.

Erika Marie Dalquist, 21, who worked at a telemarketing company in Brainerd, Minn., 127 miles northwest of Minneapolis, was the first to disappear. Ms. Dalquist was last seen leaving the Tropical Nites, a downtown bar popular with students from Central Lakes College, in the early morning of Oct. 30.

[...]

"What's unusual about this," said Sheriff Jim Kostreba of Stearns County, who is handling the search for Mr. Guimond, "is that we have four young people missing within a relatively small area. They're all about the same age, and they all disappeared at night."

Yes, Shadow, this has been going on way too long. The good news...we shouldn't hear about any new cases for a bit...if the timeline proves correct.
