They announced a new case about 6 hours ago:

DNA Doe Project Case Announcement: Pulaski County Jane Doe - Missouri (1981)

Status: Research in progress.

Who was Pulaski County Jane Doe?
On May 25, 1981, authorities recovered a body of an unidentified, deceased white female from a low water crossing off Highway MM north of Dixon, MO. The woman, estimated to be between age 25-40, had suffered trauma to her face and had been strangled with pantyhose. Her death is considered homicide. The woman’s race is undetermined, possibly White with a mixture of Native American or Hispanic. The victim was likely born in the United States and had probably lived in Missouri for only a few years before her death, based on an analysis of strontium and lead in her body. She most likely grew up in Southeastern US. When found she was wearing clothes, but no shoes were located.

Date found: 25 May 1981
Race: Caucasian, Hispanic, or Native American
Sex: Female
Age: 25 to 40 years

DNA Doe Project

I see from her WS thread that DDP has been working on Pulaski County Jane Doe for a few months now, but it looks like they just created a FB post for discussing her case. Here is her WS Thread: MO - MO - Dixon, Wht/NtvFem UP10222, >35, off Hwy MM, upper denture, May'81

I hope she is close to being identified!

I like how all their Facebook case announcements have unique stripes behind the photos.

I hadn't noticed that but you're right-- That's such a clever way to represent how each one has a unique DNA sequence all their own. I wonder if it is randomly designed or if they base the number and colors of lines on something from their actual DNA code? Either way, it is a nice touch. :)

Another recent Q&A post from DDP on Dec 11th:

Q: Why won't DDP take cases of young children or babies?

A: From the beginning in order to keep our mission clear and focused we chose to take cases that only involved victims, not suspects. When young children are discovered and the parents did not report them missing they are obvious persons of interest. Particularly in the case of newborn infants - from the agency's point of view the real objective would be identifying the mother, not her infant who likely never was given a name. In that sense, these cases are actually assailant cases.

When it's clear the mother could not be involved we do accept these. The policy is not about age, but about whether there is an obvious direct link to a suspect.

Thankfully, there are other organizations who handle these cases. We wish to see justice served for these young victims as much as anyone.

Tiny update on Facebook regarding Plainview Jane Doe.

''Status: Research is in progress. Although previously believed to be white, her admixture shows majority African components and indicates she is likely black.''

Plainview Doe's thread (somehow I was not following this one before): TX - TX - Plainview, Fem, 19-21, nude and decapitated on a dirt road, Feb'82

I hope her case is solvable. Going by the results of other African American cases, her being black may make it more difficult to solve due to fewer DNA matches on GEDMatch. :( MOO.

Apparently, they lost some matches since Monday. You can see it on the Google Drive spreadsheet.
Not sure what is going on here but GEDMatch was recently bought by forensic genomics firm Verogen.

Thank you for letting us know here as somehow I overlooked this important and a bit worrying news. It seems it happened about week ago. Some news articles states that GEDMatch partnered with Verogen and some state that Verogen bought it.

Will try to find out more and the reasons why many kits disappeared.

GEDmatch Partners with Genomics Firm | Verogen

It is actually very worrying news as guys who made Gedmatch, well they were great and it was their "baby". It is also ONLY database that serves all out there to help identify Doe's and murderes. If this takeover goes wrong we go to square one again.

(off topic but I recommend to use VPN to read American news articles. Just add to your browser for free. Works well for me).

This article explains what happened when members of GEDmatch logged in after the sale to Verogen: GEDmatch Acquired by Verogen

GEDMatch members were forced to accept the new terms of services in order to view their previously uploaded DNA profiles. If they chose to "reject" the new TOS then their accounts were deleted along with all their uploaded DNA profiles. I think some might have chosen to reject not realizing it meant they would lose their DNA uploads forever (even though it says that in the description, people don't always read some just say "No" as a reflex when being asked to accept something new and not prepared to take the time to read up on it). I'm not on GEDmatch but I get the impression that this happened without any warnings in advance. Members didn't get an opportunity to download their DNA profiles to save them again. IF they don't have the data saved somewhere from before they uploaded it to GEDMatch the first time and they chose to reject the TOS, then the data is lost forever.

LE and DNA Doe Project also use the website Family Tree DNA to look for matches: DNA Testing for Ancestry & Genealogy | FamilyTreeDNA

I don't know how it compares to GEDMatch as far as the number of matches but I know that FTDNA made it so that all of their members DNA profiles are available to LE by default-- if members do not want to help LE they have to go into their profile and choose not to. GEDMatch did the opposite of that earlier this year and made all their profiles private by default and members had to go into their profiles and "OptIn" to helping LE. That caused a big set back for groups like DNA Doe Project using GEDmatch. Many people had uploaded their DNA to GEDmatch specifically to help DNA Doe Project, but they might not realize they have to log back in to update their profiles to OptIn.

MOO.

I'm on GEDmatch with both my Ancestry file and my 23andMe file. When I logged in last week I had heard about the new agreement and was prepared but I think you're right, many were not prepared. There is a new message on there about a technical issue which caused some UK kits to not appear. They are still waiting approval for some countries.

NOTICE:

We are happy to report that we have resolved the technical issue related to kits of UK users 'disappearing'. If you are still experiencing problems with your account, please contact us at [email protected] You may find that you are missing matches that were present previously. We are obligated to adhere to the various privacy policies in force in the different countries where GEDmatch users reside. As such, data of certain users who have not yet granted permission for their information to be transferred to Verogen is not visible on the site at this time. As they grant permission, these matches will be restored.

We apologize for the inconvenience this temporary disruption in service has caused. Thank you for your patience during this transition.

Google Drive updates:
Well, as far as damage control goes, Kentucky Jane Doe has lost her top match of 65.7 cM. Her new top match is 41.3 cM.
Apache Junction Jane Doe has taken a milder decline, from 27.9 cM to 26.7 cM.
On the flip side, some improvements on Buena Vista Leg whose new top match is 15.6 cM and Portland Jane Doe with a 39.7 cM top match.
Kings County Jane Doe is now on the list and her top match is 74.2 cM.

One thing about GEDmatch is that they do not do DNA test, it is just data information database. So anyone who has uploaded information there MUST have done dna test first somewhere else (ancestry, family tree etc), which in this hiccup is actually good thing and data can be uploaded again if member will bother again.

I am familiar with change or rules of Family Tree dna database allowing LE access, however, how it works - all the information gained from any dna database by LE or anyone else, are then sent to final one - GEDmatch for simple reason, they have the most extensive database out there going back centuries, plus some other big advantages for processing information. So if Doe has common great great great great parent with someone, there is more likelyhood to find a closer hit there, plus bigger chance to find those extra family trees already made there. This is very important as DNA Doe project stated in some cases they went through 4 thousand relatives to find the right one.

It is also DNA Doe project ONLY source for final genealogy processing of DNA for John and Jane Does so any changes will have huge impact on them. To add, it is only source for Parabon NanoLabs too. Hence my worry and will be really following what will come out of this takeover.

Sorry for overposting, on another thought, only reason ever for takeovers of another company are money. So unfortunately I predict higher costs for LE, also for bionformatics, sequencing etc hence DNA Doe Project and probably for members too.

So far I am not too happy about all this but will see what Verogen come up with.

I forgot to add that Kings County Jane Doe has 251 close matches (over 40 cM).
Their most promising case in that regard.
This Jane Doe doesn't have a NamUs profile I think.

This was posted in different thread but reposting here for relevance:

Here's the google drive spreadsheet: Doe Upload.xlsx

Pulaski Jane Doe's current highest centiMorgan match is 101.9 and she has 11 matches that are greater than 40 cM. That 101.9 cM match could be a 3rd cousin (Based on a chart I found here: What Are centiMorgans and How Do You Use Them to Find DNA Matches? ).

Something boiling on this thread of Marion County KY 1987 Jane Doe, DNA Doe project case. It has been announced on FB few days ago by mum that she has been informed it is her daughter. Nothing official yet anywhere but all details are visible and searchable on FB.

I usually don’t like to criticize reconstructions because it is so difficult but this reconstruction looks absolutely nothing like her. I hope her family and her son can find some sort of peace this holiday. Rest In Peace, Michelle.

I have to brag on my friends—Anthony and Lee Redgrave with their work on Pillar Point Doe and Julie Doe. Here is a link to an article where they’re interviewed—

Sleuths Are Haunted by the Cold Case of Julie Doe

Absolutely lovely people doing an amazing thing. If you haven’t heard of the Trans Doe Task Force, check out this article!

I agree that was a horrible reconstruction. I never would have matched her up even if she had been in all of the missing person databases. I hope LE can figure out who murdered her now that she has been identified. I suspect it may be someone she knew. MOO.
