So is it back to the old ways then?
It will be applied only for Does kits, not for assailant kits. So, I guess for Does kits it will be back to the old way

Wow, what amazing news. Can't wait to see what effect this has on the spreadsheet/top matches. Fingers crossed that we see some large jumps in some of the cases with lower numbers, like Vernon County, St. Tammany, Berrien, Grant County (KY), etc.

I hope the DDP releases what updates they can on those cases like they have with other ones, to help narrow things down.

Someone mentioned this to Joan I believe and she said that they have to be selective with this, especially for the homicide cases, which is understandable. Really wondering now though with the TOS change if we'll see any higher matches than the 489.4 for Tukwila. I think that's the highest number that they've had thus far, at least that's appeared on the spreadsheet (Marcia King's top match from what has been stated in interviews seems to have been in this range as well). Hopefully this will allow them to make some progress on some older cases, ultimately.

Somebody asked if the DDP can see more matches after this change and the answer was “yes in most of our cases.”

I hope we're not waiting until next Monday for an update on this one!

Surprise us, Joan.

This feels like Merry Christmas for a lot of cases.
I hope they make a breakthrough in the tougher ones and solve a lot of cases quickly.
Beyond EXCITED! A lot of voiceless people will get their names back.
Barron County, Wisconsin fully cleared their Doe cases last year under the previous, more restrictive TOS.
It'll be so wonderful to see more counties experience the same.

The spreadsheet has been partly updated. I am super happy for:

Apache Junction Jane Doe (new highest match is 183,9 cM)
Grundy Co Jane Doe (new highest match is 253,9 cM)
Monique Phoenix Jane Doe (new highest match is 120,3 cM)
Bedford NH Jane Doe (new highest match is 159,7 cM)
Evangeline Parish Jane Doe (new highest match is 243,1 cM)

Thank you, Joan and the team!

I don't know why but these cases have relatively small improvements, Berrien co Jane Doe jumped from 34.1 cM to 68.1 cM and Grant co John Doe jumped from 37.3 cM to 42.5 cM

It all depends on whether there are close relatives in the database or not. Which may indicate a non US-American background of the UID as most people uploading to genetic databases and Gedmatch are American. If you are lets say European or Asian with no recent family in the US who also tested, you have super low matches.

In Bettys (Berrien) case, wasnt it suggested somewhere she was European, maybe of French or German descent? My hypothesis is she emigrated alone to the US, maybe for marriage and has no children who did DNA tests or has no children at all. Her husband died a long time before her and she ends up in a shady nursing home or with shady caregivers who figure she has nobody to claim and miss her. She passes, either naturally or through neglect and the caregivers continue to collect her checks because nobody misses her. She is found, put into Gedmatch, but has only very distant relatives who lets say 150 years back emigrated to the US. Not unusual.

From what I see (update is in progress) is that especially the African American (eg Grundy, but many others) and Hispanic (eg Apache Junction) Does seem to benefit most from the change of policy and I am absolutely delighted about that!

A lot of cases have way more matches now by the looks, like Apache Junction went from 1 match over 40 cM to 10.

I am really happy for Sumter couple (Jane Doe now sits at 204.8 cM, Jock Doe at 232.8 cM), I really hope this year will be the year of their identification, many people are waiting for it.

I am also happy to see the benefit for African American and Hispanic Does. Twinsburg John Doe new highest match is 136.7 cM!

Happy to hear the news, I hope that the identification process of UIDs will get less bumpy. This improvement also means that more cases could potentially be handled simultaneously as less time is needed to build a family tree (@transdoetaskforce)

Maybe they’re related to people like me who’s family immigrated in early 1900. My paternal Gpa & Gma were the first generation born in the US. All 4 of their parents immigrated from Czechoslovakia. So a few Czechs are out there, me, my youngest kid and my 73 year old cousin.

My maternal side were original settlers in Maine. They’re a bazillion of DNA testers on that side.

I think Betty is mostly European with Spanish and French admixture, but according to the pie chart she has a tiny percent of Sub Saharan African admixture. I agree with Payroll Nerd that she is probably from the second or the third generations of Americans. While Vernon co Jane Doe who is European and also has very low numbers on spreadsheet probably could had been an immigrant herself (and as it looks like she is 25% Ashkenazi I would think she is from Central or Eastern Europe).
