Do NOT eat bagged spinach until further notice!

This spinach ban is going to do me in. I LOVE spinach and I buy the bagged baby spinach all the time to make salads. I hope they get their acts together quickly.

Well I sure am glad my son likes to grow lettuce in his backyard! Personally, I'm just going to eat the mint that my husband plants in front.

My husband has never allowed me to buy any of the packaged lettuce. He was a microbiology major, and I guess it's just the idea of it. Seems like even if it's on one piece of lettuce, the germs would spread in that packaged environment. Is the air sucked out? I don't know; but even like the Cruise Ships - I AM CONVINCED. You will never find me on a large cruise ship.
OH Marthatex, you are missing out. Cruise ships are so much fun. :p

Oh, I went on one once with 2 families - it was fun. Bed size of closet, bathroom too small. (My husband had to go the "economy" rate.) It was fun but I want to go on the Clipper voyages. They're more nature oriented and smaller, and I'm not interested in partying alot.

I want to go to Alaska, Costa Rica, Panama, Galapagos, Peru, maybe Europe.

That's not asking for too much is it?

Nope, I don't think so!~ Any and all of the trips sound wonderful!:D

Since heat kills ecoli I assume cold would too.
At what cold temp would the cold kill ecoli? Would it kill it even if the spinache eventually (say as the salad was consumed) went back to room temp?

Gee, guess I can't sell a spinach salad today, huh! ;) Spinach is the one salad green we use that can take a cooked dressing.

I saw Gwynn on CNN earlier today, and she told the doctors to do anything they needed to get her well. She said the thought of her 1 1/2 year son not having a mommie made her fight back.

I assume all have read the following? posted just in case you haven't, this is so alarming:

U.S. expands warning to cover all fresh spinach

Consumers should avoid all fresh spinach, regardless of whether it is pre-packaged, a chief U.S. food safety official warned on Saturday, saying the number of E. coli illnesses had passed 100.
"We need to get a clear message to consumers," said Dr. David Acheson, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's director of food safety and security.
"Some consumers may not be aware that spinach that may be available to them may have been pre-packaged," he said referring to loose spinach sold in restaurants and supermarkets.

While not always the case (and I would think even less so after this) part of many organic and "more healthy" farms is using poo as fertilizer. Even some of the bagged fertilizer you buy has poo in it though I don't know if the processing steps may kill e coli or not, but honestly if you think about it, there's likely poo in almost everything grown outside. You can't keep all the rabbits, raccoons etc out 24/7. I'm honestly surprised this type of thing doesn't happen more often then it does but thank goodness it doesn't. They need to come up with some sort of "soak" that kills e-coli so any time you eat veggies you can soak them and then be safe(r).

Ack I'm glad I checked here before getting groceries today. I'd planned on picking up fresh spinach instead grrr.

Having salad this week is going to be impossible. Hopefully the store doesn't raise the price on other vegetables and make this even more difficult, but I figure they'll do it.

When I went grocery shopping early this morning, there were only empty spaces where the fresh spinach usually is. (pre-packaged & DIY)

Wow I didn't realize so many people ate fresh spinach. Anyhoo, today is day 4 since I ate a whole plateful of the stuff and then 15 minutes later saw the news alert. I feel great and I don't think I'm going to have any E.Coli problems from it. The brand I ate is "Fresh Express Organic Baby Spinach". I hope everone else who ate it before the warning came out is doing well also.
I feel like I really dodged a bullet this time!

Me too, Trixie! I'm glad you are doing ok!

I eat fresh spinach all the time. We keep it in our fridge all the time. A couple of weeks ago, I opened a bag and it tasted funny and I threw it and the salad I had fixed into the trash. Next trip to the store, I bought a new bag and the same thing happened again. I told my hubby that I was going to try the no loose leaf, non-packaged spinach next time.

I had already quit buying the packaged lettuce a year or so ago, when almost every bag had a funky smell and tasted awful to me.

To be sure we are safe, I guess I'll have to start growing my own!

My dilema - someone just gave me some homemade SPINACH PIE which I absolutely love - with feta and filo - YUM YUM. Should I eat it or not?????

Was it made with fresh spinach or frozen?

FROZEN -- but wasn't frozen spinach fresh before it was frozen, lol????

I would definatly eat it. I see no harm in eating frozen spinach. Heck who knows how long it's been frozen anyway? I would eat it and I'm the one who is sitting around waiting to get sick! lol! (Hi Angelwngs!)

I guess they are saying now not to eat any spinach,pre-packaged or fresh.

I'm with you angelwngs,I bought the packaged salad for a long while, but stopped about six months or so ago,for the same reasons you are giving. They started to smell kind of funky, also the greens were getting soft and soggy pretty fast.

I have a question... the news gave the symptoms we should be aware of the effects of e.coli, but when do they occur? Right away,a few hours later,or can it be something like two or three days before you feel symptoms? Anyone know?

I read that boiling the spinach can kill the bacteria of the E-coli.

I love fresh spinach in salads, but I don't like the cooked spinach. Yuck!!
I am no Pop-eye!!

Tonight with the meatloaf we had popeye spinach from a can...heres hoping something doesnt go wrong with the can goods!
