Doctors say roller shoes injuring kids

  • #21
I would strongly suggest people ask the managers of their favoite stores to ban the use of the rollers. Libraries and other places ban inline skating inside, why can't a business ban using these?

Yeah I've been assaulted by kids on these things. Certainly there are great and respectful kids, but there are more and more kids who don't give a darn about anyone but them. Have no manners what so ever. I almost got hit by a kid on wheels last week and when I stepped back I bumped into his sister who was not on wheels but chasing him. Mom was 5 feet away AND WATCHING and never said a word! Now I have 3 bulging disks in my lower back and any sharp movement hurts like HE!! so I was NOT a happy lady.

In the grocery store one day two teens (middle school) were not only wheeling, but throwing a beach ball over the aisles to each other and almost plowed an elderly woman over. I saw the Mom a moment later and told her and she just looked at me so I said "Well, you can beat their butts or I'll be happy to do it for you" and walked off.

I have to admit when I first saw these, I whined bit that I was probably too old for a pair!!

I'll stick to my rollerblades and avoid grocery store aisles. Holy cow, my mom would NEVER let me wear anything like that to a store.

I was thrilled many months ago when our school's banned these shoes, it took a lot of the asking by the kid's for them away because they wouldn't be able to impress their friends. They aren't cheap either, they are a lot for our budget. I haven't bought them for my kid's, something always said they would bring me trouble. Who needs their kid moving any faster than they already do, 24/7. LOL. I can see why the kid's like them though.

My son was not allowed to wear them anywhere but home - preferrably outside. I would never have allowed him to wear them in stores either. Luckily, as mentioned above, the newness has worn off and he no longer wears them.

My kids have them.
At first I made them wear the proper pads until they learned how to use them. They fell a bit....but no more than I did when I was learning how to roller skate. I can remember having a sore tailbone many a time from rollerskating. A few times I even fell on my butt, then bounced back and whacked my head too. I've even had my fingers rolled over while I was down! Ouch! But, I'm still here! I chalk it up to normal childhood bumps and bruises.

I think they're fun as long as they're used with restrictions and with respect to others.

Just my :twocents:

I don't see why this warrants an article. 1 death out of millions of kids. Seem like pretty good odds to me. Roll on!
I soooooooooo agree--- these were really popular about 3 years ago with the kids hockey teams- they wheeled all over the place in airports, hotels, ice rinks, etc--- come on folks--- they are no dangerous than anything else- skate boards-skim boards, roller blades----etc, ect, etc

back to common sense- and how they use them when they have them on- I just posted that my son wore them thru airports, hotels, and ice rinks- but he didnt go flying around---- guess you would have to see a group of kids that really know how to use them to know what I mean- they arent meant to go zinging down a aisle !!

I've seen kids have them in public places and barely noticed they were rolling. I'm clumsy, though, so I'd totally knock over the oranges!

They do sound fun in an airport.

You cant believe the people that would stop him, and the other kids and ask them all about them-- it was priceless to see some of those folks watch them--

I don't know how old you are, but my skates were metal and attached to my saddle oxfords and I had my skate key around my neck. We skated up and down the sidewalks. My sons were born before skate boards, roller blades, etc. They skated at rinks though.

I did see a piece this morning on our Denver local channel about these shoes. The ones I saw just had the wheel on the back, not the front as some of the shoes that converted from sneakers to skates I've seen around. Are these the ones discussed?

I've seen kids in stores with these on, but they were behaving just fine and going slow along with their family. I really don't see how the things can be good for a kid's heels and tendon if they pick the foot up and roll on the heel very much for days on end.

I had kids later than you, but I spent hours in our basement skating in circles with the same skates you had, they were hand me downs X 2, but I loved them! I think the Mom's liked them too, because when they couldn't hear those skates on the sidewalk making all the noise anymore, they were looking to see why.

I had scars on the inside of my heels back then from those skates coming off my shoes and falling. I also fell off a skateboard and hit my head on a sidewalk.

My kids got these for Christmas 2 years ago, a lot later than most kids around here. My parents bought them - I would never have paid that kind of money for shoes! (although my mom did find them for about 1/2 the normal price somewhere)

I was amazed at how well they did once they got the hang of it (in the house, falling many times, with pads on). Much better than roller skating or ice skating. We had a lot of rules about where they could and could not wear them. School was out of the question. Their absolute favorite place was the school cafeteria one day when school was out and I was helping up there for something and no one else was in there and all of the tables were put up. But they were still annoying, and I was constantly having to remind them not to do it with other people around or to change their shoes if we were going somewhere that it would be inappropriate to use them.

I am glad they outgrew them and don't care about them anymore. They are soooo last year. ;)

They have gotten to be such a pesky thing that quite a few stores in the DC area are banning them. Our local grocery store has a sign on the door blatantly saying "NO HEELYS"). My daughter's bestfriend has a pair she wore with us downtown to do some photography... that child took so many spills that I was worried that I was going to end up taking her home with bruises and broken bones. :(

Heelys are a harmless fad. They will be passe before they can be banned! Every generation has to have something to bellyache about that "the kids" are doing - maybe this is ours!

I would not want someones child roller blading or skate boarding in the grocery store either.
My issue is not the danger (Although I do not understand why they don't have to wear a helmet with them)
My issue is its simply rude and annoying. My children would not be permitted to do any of the above in a public place except those designated for skating.
On that same topic I can't stand when people let their children run all over restaurants (unless its Chuckee Cheese or McD's play area)

Not much chance of that. In Florida you don't even have to wear a helmet while riding a motorcycle. Is that stuipid or what??
