Dominican Republic - Darryl Fornatora, 46, FL man missing, 28 Jan 2016

I'm familiar with WS but came across this case when People ran the article so I looked it up. I've been the DR several times. What sticks out to me most is that his wallet had the bullet hole and the money was still in there. I'm not familiar with all of DR but the part we visited was VERY poor. I have to think that his wallet was ON him when the bullet was shot and whomever shot him ran and didn't think of the wallet. Leaves out robbery to me......where we went, the average salary was $100 a MONTH if you were lucky. $400 could have gotten someone very far.........

I do not find it weird he was carrying that much cash. Both times we've went we carried cash for any extras/gifts and tips even though we were at an all inclusive resort.

And why in the world did his friend take his board and computer??!!! Even if DF had run off in some weird haze...wouldn't you leave his stuff at the hotel thinking he would return? Even if you decided to bail and go home, I would leave the stuff knowing that my friend would return to his room....and what happened to his other luggage? I may have missed reading that. Why would he have taken the board and computer and left his other things?

Something more happened between friends. Maybe the friend SAW what happened and is scared to say but him catching a flight back home is weird to me. Even if DF was acting weird why would the friend not just go back to the hotel to chill and see if his friend showed? And seriously, I wouldn't leave my friend in a foreign country if I knew he/she wasn't right.

The bullet hole is telling......someone didn't find the wallet and think "oh, here is something for target practice, cash and all". IMO it happened while he had the wallet on him....and it wasn't while surfing.....

I hope they find out what happened but I'm worried it won't ever be.

Six months after his disappearance, the family of a Florida tennis pro who vanished while on a surfing trip to the Dominican Republic say they're making a new push for answers.

(...)

Fornatora's family tells WPEC they're hoping to keep their son's disappearance in the spotlight.

"We're afraid it's going to go away, we're so terrified of that," Nancy Fornatora, his mother, told the station.

Monday, on the six-month anniversary of Darryl Fornatora's disappearance, his family launched the #AnswersForDarryl campaign (...)

From article above:

"CBS affiliate WPEC reports that Fornatora's cell phone was found in a car returned to a rental agency by his travel companion, who returned to South Florida alone. The travel companion has reportedly refused interview requests from the station."

Does Darryl not want to be found and throws his wallet in the surf to prove it? Wouldn't be the first time

I've been to Cabarete a little over ten years ago, not sure how it is today but at the time it wasn't very safe. I mean, in town at the bars by the beach it is very touristy lots of americans / canadians, but on the road in between bars and hotels there are some local bars that we ventured into that felt very unsafe. Men grabbing at women and being really pushy, plus some guys at our resort actually got robbed at gunpoint in one of those local bars. The road between the resorts and the town bars was not lit at all.

The bars in town are also on the beach and it would be very easy to get into the water at night after having too much to drink and get swept away / drown.

I think I've read that there weren't good waves and that's why they had left the area, but Cabarete is a well known windsurfing town so I wonder if his report was actually checked? It would be possible the waves died down but I wonder why they would have left after just a day or two when it would probably have picked up soon after.

Family has hired Beau Dietl & Assoc. WHOA.

Just catching up on this thread.....glad to see Beau Dietl & Assoc. are on the case. I'm quite sure the family will get some answers now and hopefully justice for Darryl. This Matt dude must have shot Darryl (?) disposed of his body God knows where/how or, like mentioned previously, he knows what happened to him. but won't say. I can't remember if Matt was a new friend/acquaintance but he sure is a sleezebag IMO. Too many red flags to this story.

PALM BEACH GARDENS — Today marks six months since West Palm Beach resident Darryl Fornatora went missing during a surfing trip to the Dominican Republic.

Fornatora’s family will hold a fund raiser at 6 p.m. today at Burger Bar on Donald Ross Road in Palm Beach Gardens to raise money to offset costs to pay private investigators involved in the search.

Darryl Fornatora went missing after traveling to the Dominican Republic on a surfing trip in January. His wallet and cell phone have turned up, but no one knows why or how Fornatora disappeared. (Photo provided by Gilbert and Nancy Fornatora.)

I am actually going to the Dominican Republic next week (although I am going to the south coast) this case weighs heavily on my mind and I will be thinking of Darryl and of course will have my WS eye open at all times.

Hmmm.....good video - thanks momoffourboys. I need to view it again, but it stood out to me that there had to be more of a conversation between Daryl and Matt when Daryl returned to the villa and was acting paranoid and said they had to leave. You wouldn't just pack up and leave without getting a full explanation of why and what the circumstances were that scared Daryl so badly. (If that is actually how it went down but I assume this info has been vetted.) also, no mention of the wallet and bullet hole.

Need to read those texts too, I couldn't catch them the first time around.

Authorities in the Dominican Republic have closed a case involving missing West Palm Beach resident Darryl Fornatora and have labeled the disappearance a drowning, according to a private investigator hired by Fornatora’s family.

But
Bo Dietl, a former New York City police detective whose private investigation firm has been searching for Fornatora, said that law enforcement officials in the Caribbean nation have reached the wrong conclusion.

Is there a freakin' reason that they don't have the "friend" in custody? Are you kidding me? I've seen people taken into custody with far less evidence.
