The history of Gay Pride Celebrations began in 1969 in Greenwich Village, New York City at the Stonewall Inn.

At the time, it was common all over the United States for police to raid gay and lesbian bars. While they were purportedly looking for liquor law or other violations, patrons were arrested and dragged off to jail with no legitimate charges. The names of those arrested were often published in the papers and many of those people were fired from their jobs as a result.

But on the night of June 27th, 1969 something different happened. When police raided the Stonewall Inn, the butch lesbians and drag queens fought back.

Gay pride parades celebrate that event and the movement to fight for dignity, equal rights and equal protection, moving toward a time when gays can be completely open and integrated within the greater community living lives "just like the rest of us.".

Nice DK-

Just what we've all grown to expect from you, intolerance presented humerously.

Good luck on your press release and Doogie threads.
Thank you Lucy Liberal for your insightful commentary, as always. :slap:

With nice big bonfire crosses too.
In the great state of Indiana, former capital of the KKK, we had ONE rally here locally years ago and the protestors outnumbered the Klansmen by about 4-1.

It's not a fair comparison, anyways. The KKK hates most everybody. It isn't about hetero pride, primarily. Now, those funeral protestors on the other hand.....

I guess that makes it ok then.

KKK Showing Support for Gay Marriage Ban
On November 8, voters in Texas will have to decide if they want to ban gay marriage in the state. The Ku Klux Klan has come out in support of the ban and will be rallying at the Austin city hall to express this support. Other supporters find this a little disturbing - but if they are going to campaign for bigotry, they should expect bigots to come out on their side.

Yes, surprisingly the same organization that supported state laws banning interracial marriage would also support bans on gay marriage. They lost that battle 40 years ago, but are going to fight this one too. Have fun, KKK, with your bigoted, outdated attitudes. Just show your faces, please, so I know who to avoid.

Thank goodness the KKK is "not like the rest of us!"

For those who are so uncomfortable at gay's FLAUNTING their gayness. Here's an interesting link:

Flaunting may seem like a legitimate accusation at first, when faced with some of the televised coverage of gay pride events. But a closer look shows just how obviously ludicrous this is.

First off, what would be the purpose of flaunting one's gayness? In other words, what would be the purpose behind flaunting oneself? What good could possibly come out of it? Oftentimes when people know you're gay, it's a bad thing at worst, and mediocre at best. Harassment, discrimination, nasty comments yelled out of cars, the possibility of being beaten and even tortured or killed... all these are reasons not to flaunt one's gayness. But what, then, in spite of these major disadvantages, could even possibly be a motivator to do it anyway? Homophobic hype claims it is for the purpose of recruiting. Let's take a closer look, then, at the ridiculous idea of recruiting.

PD, you make it sound like they are choosing to wear white shoes after Labor Day, and if folks don't like it, tough!

But being gay isn't about that for a lot of people. Gays have plenty to worry about. Like being beaten. Or Killed. The risk of losing business if clients or customers find out. Just to name a few.

Society's intolerance at best, and hatred at worst, causes many people to try to hide who they are- even from themselves.

Could you imagine having to spend your life pretending you are gay? Trying to convince yourself that you are "normal" and gay just like most of the world? When it goes against the very essence of who you really are?

Can you imagine your religion teaching you that being straight is wrong, and that the only way you can get to heaven is to never act on sexual needs? Can you imagine having to tell your parents that you are straight- and risk them disowning you?

That's what it's like for so many gays. And that's why it's important that gays keep coming out. One day, I truly believe, that people will be free to be who they are. I really hope that.

And it's funny, because it's mostly the same arguments against gay marriage that they used against interracial marriage!

Many years ago when I was a waitress, I worked with this guy who was gay. We became BEST friends. I went to the gay bars with him, we took trips together etc... There were times when he didn't want to wait on a table if there were certain types of straight men sitting there.. He would have someone else take the table.. I felt sad for my friend because it was tough to be gay. And let me tell you, this guy was GAY.. he acted it, looked it etc...

My parents, who are very Christian, knew my best friend was gay. My parents NEVER, not once, judged him or every shut him out. However, they didn't approve of his lifestyle either but never said a word. When I see my friend to this day, he's become a drunk, he's miserable and thinks of suidcide (sp?). He tells me that he never wanted to be gay and that he can't help it.. His family found out he's gay and things changed between them. To me, no matter how hard a gay person tries to make a statement or whatever, there are also a lot of people in this world who will never except their lifestyle and they have a right not to just as much as the gay wants their rights as well..

I know people who are so far to the left, don't believe in God, and yet they also don't want gay marriage to be legal.. I know people who are on the right, and they say they don't care one way or another..

My family is very christian as well. I was raised that being gay or lesbian is a sin and you will go to hell for it. I have a cousin who dated men in the past but she is gay. I have always known just by certain things she says and how she acted ect. To this day she is 33 and has NEVER admitted it. She has a myspace account and we chat on there and for her orientation it says "lesbian" and she will not come out to us. I know its because she is afraid of what her family will say. While we may disapprove of her lifestyle (thats out right) we still love her no matter what. Its sad to me that she feels like she cannot come to me atleast and come out. She knows I dont care. I told DH that I am going to approach her and ask her flat out why she has not told me but he tells me not too. I just wanted to add my 2 cents.:D

Michelle :)

And you believe that?

You obviously do care, you said you disapprove of her lifestyle.
And that is probably why she has not told you.

semi-OT aside---It's been speculated that this was *not* coincidentally the first weekend night after the death of 'gay icon' Judy Garland in London the previous Sunday.

I guess this, and now wandering completely OT, sounds like a loaded question, but I am curious, when folks use the word "lifestyle" in regards to gay people, what do they mean (or think they mean)? It genuinely confuses me...

It doesnt matter if I disapprove or not. She knows I love her. In life people dont always agree and that is ok. I am not saying if you are gay you go to hell like I was taught. I am not God. I dont agree with her choice, but thats ok. I dont agree with drug addicts choices either. We have a few of them in our family, I still love them. Its not for me to decide who she sleeps with or how her lifestyle I love her regardless.

I always assume that the people who use the word "lifestyle" in reference to gays are the people that think it's a choice to be gay. I could be wrong, (you know what they say about assumptions), but I'm pretty sure on this one.
