Scientists are finding that many "all-natural" dietary supplements contain potent drugs

Cohen is part of a group of academics and public officials who are trying to expose and crack down on the dietary supplement industry. Though more and more Americans are taking supplements — sales have been growing faster than pharmaceuticals in recent years, and the US market reached more than $6.4 billion last year — the industry currently receives only light oversight from the FDA.

From the link:

"...the US [Pharmaceutical] market reached more than $6.4 billion last year — the industry currently receives only light oversight from the FDA."

Yup, the nutraceutical, supplement, and vitamin industry is the Wild West. There was a study a few years ago that found that many of the products contained high levels of mercury and lead.

We can't sleuth her so I am not sure, but I think she has a very well to do SO . I imagine her practice is not a critical sourcevof income for her.
I was under the exact opposite impression. Especially with royal harbor

As always, google is your friend.

I don't think I've ever seen someone so completely surrounded by grifters, criminals, and con artists.

MOO, of course.

She's completely separated herself from Sievers’ office, which the doctor's husband, Mark, is running.

“I want to stress the fact that I am not in that office any longer. Yes, there’s still an answering machine saying that I am, but I’m not,” Spiska said.

Spiska intends to carry on Sievers' message and mission: “Take charge of your health, get educated and look at your body as whole,” she says. “Keep looking, keep demanding and keep expecting a cure.”

She clearly has distanced her self from MS.I just wish people would stop throwing DR Sievers name around for self gain. jmo

Let's be honest here. TS believed in supplements. Crap supplements IMO.

Look at this infomercial that she was on. Did the host call her "Karen Sievers @15:09?

I don't think she did herself any favors by appearing on this show. MOO I don't want to criticize MS too much because TS was riding the supplement train herself. MOO

<modsnip> A person with an autoimmune disease (Which one?) is not going to be cured with some supplement being sold on her infomercial. MOO.

Some info on Tamer Elsafy who "paired up" with TS on the infomercial I posted.

He sold pet supplements in addition to human supplements.

SNIP:

"The company, known as Flexcin, makes and sells supplements for humans and pets to aid in joint pain. After receiving a tip the company was selling and giving out expired pet supplements, Call for Action investigators ordered the two products in question. One was a product called ‘FlexPet on the go,’ which is for dogs and cats. The other product was ‘FlexEquine,’ which is for horses."

"WINK News went to the Flexcin warehouse in Cape Coral to speak with the owner, Tamer Elsafy. When investigators arrived, they approached the owner in the parking lot, but he refused to comment and instead slammed the door in the crew’s face."

For shame.

No one said it was a cure. Many natural ingredients and good quality supplements reduce inflammation which causes pain. I have RA and the best thing I can do for myself is to avoid processed foods which increase inflammation and eat a diet rich in fruits and vegetables and take quality supplements to help reduce the pain caused by inflammation. I believe Dr. Sievers wholeheartedly believed in this approach becauze she saw that it worked. How can you say sbe was dillusional?

A casual observer might expect an MD to be cognizant of the sometimes dubious claims surrounding supplements, and might expect an MD to have certain standards, such as double blind studies proving that a given supplement was more effective than a placebo, especially given the high price of supplements.

I think it's safe to say, TS was not concerned with double blind studies. She was also tight with an intuitologist, for heaven's sake. I'm willing to believe that she was a true believer, and perhaps set aside her scientific training to promote those things she believed in.

the issue of a physician prescribing or recommending supplements has ethical, financial, and other components

there are different ways a physician can prescribe or recommend supplements such as:
-over the counter supplements
physician advises a patient which ones would be beneficial, informing them which suppplements, in what amounts, and how often they should take them, and directing the patient that they can be obtained over the counter at the store
-compounded supplements
physician writes a prescription for the exact ingredients, strength, and dosage - and instructs the patient to fill the prescription at the pharmacy
-retail supplements
physician either sells the supplements directly from their office, or indirectly thru another party such as in Dr. Sievers practice

in the first 2 examples, the physician does not profit
in the last, they do

"...a significant number of mainstream medical professionals are now vying for a share of the $26.7 billion-a-year U.S. supplement market. Indeed, industry analysts predict that health-care practitioners could be among the fastest-growing sales channels for supplements over the next decade."
