Body of missing woman found off highway in Kentucky, state police say

Dwan Atwell, 42, had been missing since March, when her family reported her missing to the sheriff's office in Breckinridge County. She was found dead Thursday afternoon on South Highway 259 in Breckinridge County, about 75 miles southwest of Louisville, according to a Kentucky State Police news release.

The news release did not provide Atwell's hometown in Illinois, but the police department in Bloomington, Illinois, had previously asked for the public's help with her case, stating she last spoke to family in December.

Body of Illinois woman reported missing in March found in Breckinridge County, KSP says


The Kentucky Medical Examiner's Office performed an autopsy Friday, which helped authorities identify the body as that of Atwell.

Gregory McCrary, 43, is accused of killing Dwan Atwell, 42, of Illinois in May of 2021.

McCrary was recently indicted by a Breckinridge County grand jury for murder and persistent felony offender.

He is lodged in the Breckinridge County Detention Center
