Earthquake in the Washington DC area

I grew up in Reston and Herndon. I do remember an earthquake that I felt in Herndon. I can't remember which year, but late 80s or early 90s ( moved from there in '94). I was home alone and it freaked me out!! I didn't think VA was supposed to get earthquakes

I grew up in Southern California before settling on the east coast. As a kid I remember how terrifying it was went an earthquake would hit. After a quake Mom would nonchalantly go about straightening pictures, furniture, etc. as if it were no big deal ... an everyday occurance. I gradually learned to not be so alarmed. Got to be that my only concern was the safety of our cookie jar. lol

My youngest daughter lives in Springfield, Va., and works in D.C.. She said it woke them up but they were not exactly sure what was going on. The grandchildren slept right through it. She said there is no damage at all.

i live a half mile from the capitol and slept right through it. kinda wished i could have experienced it! thank God no one was hurt and there was no serious damage!

I'd rather have a hurricane over an earthquake. At least I know when they're coming and I evacuate as needed.

I was talking to a close family friend about this morning's earthquake (she used to live in Reston as well, but now lives down here). She told me about a Japanese friend of hers and one time, they happened to share a hotel room for something. She found it odd that the friend slept with her hand pressed against the wall on top of the bed.

She asked her the next morning, and the friend said when she grew up in Japan, her Dad installed a railing thing over everyone's beds and they were just trained to hold it when they were sleeping. With all the earthquakes there, they just got tired of falling out of their beds so much!!

I talked to my sister in Leesburg and it woke up her and my BIL, but not my nieces. They thought it was the Concorde until they watched the news later.

The earliest recorded earthquake in Maryland occurred in Annapolis, on April 24, 1758. The shock lasted 30 seconds and was preceded by subterranean noises. Additional felt reports were received from a few points in Pennsylvania.
