Possible case in Ghana.
A man believed to be in his late twenties died in the hospital with the symptoms of Ebola Tuesday.

He was left unattended to by frightened hospital staff who did not have basic protective equipment with which to handle the patient.

According to the Medical Superintendent of the hospital, Prince Kwakye Afriyie, the deceased reported to the hospital three days ago with fever.

He was treated and discharged.
But the Pusiga native returned to the hospital, this time with blood oozing out of his orifices, Dr Afriyie said.

CONAKRY, Guinea — A Red Cross team was attacked while collecting bodies believed to be infected with Ebola in southeastern Guinea, the latest in a string of assaults that are hindering efforts to control West Africa's current outbreak.

One Red Cross worker is recovering after being wounded in in the neck in Tuesday's attack in Forecariah, according to Beno a spokesman for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.

Family members of the dead initially set upon the six volunteers and vandalized their cars, said Mariam Barry, a resident. Eventually a crowd gathered and headed to the regional health office, where they threw rocks at the building.

Just popping in to recommend this documentary I happened to catch on TV last night. It aired on the Science Channel through my cable company, but was produced by The Discovery Channel. It was very interesting and informative. It also included an interview with Nancy Writebol, the female patient treated at Emory University. Here is the press release describing the program for those who may be interested in watching it.

This is a heads up for those who are interested - Unreported World at 7.30pm on Channel 4 after the news. The programme shows what things are like inside the hospitals trying to deal with the outbreak.

Well I just watched Unreported World - if you can get it on catch up TV in the UK I would recommend it. Also, you should be able to catch it on 4OD if you register although I do not know if that is just UK residents.

Really sobering and saddening but worthwhile to watch I think.

This quote was memorable from one of the PH leads who is trying to co-ordinate the whole campaign in Sierra Leone.

She said, "When I first arrived I met a man who said:

"I've lost my brother, I've lost my sister, I've lost my father, I've lost my child. No one has arrived to disinfect my house. They have only given me three body bags and I am not sure how to use them"

I thought - Oh **** - we are too late"

Ghana is smack in the middle of the countries reporting and they still have they havenT had one case. I sincerely doubt that. (They have had a few scares but no ebola supposedly so far)

Overall cases over 6,000. Numbers still do not add up.

The C4 programme once again quoted the statistic that the death rate in the hospitals there is 70%. I cannot believe that the death rate outside hospital is lower than inside, so that makes a 50% death rate a non starter.

I don't believe that for a minute.

Possible fifth American patient.

"The National Institutes of Health is preparing to care for an American doctor who was exposed to the Ebola virus while volunteering in Sierra Leone."

A private hospital has been transformed into an Ebola treatment centre. The article explains what modifications have been made.

A team of doctors and nurses fro Uganda will be working at the centre.

I believe it is already full to capacity, but several other treatment centres are also being prepared. A glimmer of hope in all the misery.
