He did not disclose that he came from Liberia...

i suspected this is the case but has it been confirmed?

Well, then whatever doctor let him go has a lot of explaining to do.

Yes, unless it turns out the patient lied about his travel history. A LOT of harmless viruses present with fever and vomiting/diarrhea. You don't call the CDC every time you see a patient with those symptoms.

It will be important to know whether the first treating entity failed to ask appropriate questions about recent travel or if the patient purposely omitted that information, or worse, lied. I have no idea which side dropped the ball, but clearly SOMEONE did.

Yes, this is on now, live news conference from Presby Hosp. with Drs. now

People, we DO NOT KNOW that he presented to the same hospital (or even any hospital) on the 26th as he did on the 28th. Let's not crucify anyone without knowing the facts.

it's true but i don't know how any medical health professional, heck any reasonably intelligent adult that hasn't been living in a cave could have some one come to them and be like "hey i'm not feeling well and I JUST got back from liberia" and that person not know that you HAVE to isolate the person immediately just in case. If he lied about his travel history then that something else, thats on him.

^^^^Wish I had seen the first part of that interview.

He did in fact present to Presbyterian Dallas on Friday as well as on Sunday. I missed the part about whether or not he was asked about travel or whether he denied it.

I do know the doc being interviewed. He is one of the top infectious disease specialists in the country.

I agree if you didn't know he just got back from liberia. Do we know if he is on Africa origin (not just racially but actually) there seems to be a real stigma about it over there. ME if I came back from liberia and started feeling sick the very first thing i would do is warp myself in trash bags or a shower curtain and haul butt to the hospital and be like "i'm sick i just got back from liberia its ebola lets get to work" because I would know that would give me the best chance of staying alive.

He did not disclose that he came from Liberia...btw, there are NO direct flights to DFW from Africa

I have not seen anything to suggest that he concealed where he came from - do you have a link for that?

It is on local news conf here (DFW area) with Drs. from Presby Dallas.

Did they ask him? My understanding is that this guy lives in Liberia and was visiting family in Dallas.
Did they ask him where he was from? They always ask about insurance, how is it that they didn't know he was from Liberia?

Isolation in a hospital is nothing compared to what the people brought back to the USA with ebola were given!

Regular isolation is a slap in the face to the entire hospital and the American public. It is just a matter of time until we see more outbreaks. I am really disgusted this person is not being given top care to protect our country!

Just my opinion!

No. Due to HIPAA, they can't reveal anything about that patient that the patient doesn't allow them to reveal.

I'm confused about the presser. Where is this guy from? It sounded like he was from here b/c they said he traveled to West Africa and then came back on the 20th ( Do not remember exact dates right now). But then they said he was visiting family in the area. So where is he from exactly. Honestly something needs to be done with those traveling from the area. Quarantine them for 21 days. If you are healthy you get to move on out if not then well you are suck until travel plans can be made.

Why not? This is how this disease will take hold-from people not being honest about their chances of exposure, or on the other hand, lack of appropriate screening.

This patient "sought treatment" before arriving at the ER a couple of days later. I would like to know why, given this patient's symptoms and travel history, he wasn't isolated immediately. Either the medical facility neglected to screen him appropriately, or he was not honest about his travel history. Either of these possibilities are unacceptable.

I totally agree and yes, it is totally unacceptable. I can fully believe that our medical facilities in this country would not even go through the effort to screen ill patients. I'm so pissed that people are allowed to just fly into this country from an Ebola infected country without any restrictions imposed at all. But of course what better country to fly to if you have Ebola?

Why in the world do you think this patient is not being treated?! This patient is receiving intensive care IN AN ISOLATION UNIT.

And he wasn't even isolated to begin with. He went to the doctors, and he wasn't isolated right away. Until several days later.
That's bad, very bad.

There are only four units in the country capable of isolating Ebola patients (as we were told when Dr. Branly was flown over here).
I don't believe Dallas is one of them.

The patient is in isolation and is receiving intensive care. He is not stuck in a padded room being slipped food and water under a doorway.

The U.S. has only four such isolation units, but the CDC has insisted that any hospital can safely care for someone with Ebola.

That doesn't mean that anyone who doesn't have one of the units cannot properly care for and prevent the spread of the disease. But precautions have to be done strictly by the book.

I live in Dallas and am concerned as the next person. But isolation practices are not rocket science in the US. This disease is not spread like influenza or chicken pox. I don't think it's appropriate to panic.

I think rather than focusing on the treatment this patient is currently receiving, we should be focusing our concern on better screening of incoming passengers, which has been my stance from the very beginning.

As is stands, there is nothing preventing more people from entering our country from these affected areas as long as they are currently asymptomatic.
